Hi Mike, I'm championship coordinator for the ASWMC (Southwest) hill Climb and Sprint Championships. Our area covers from Gurston to Abingdon to West Wales and all of the counties between those points and Lands End. If you want I can let you have a list of our remaining events. In a normal year it is not unusual for us to have 36 events in our calendar.

Hi Roy that is fantastic please add to the thread. Have you had any imps out on events? If you have can you let me know where to find results and I can maybe persuade the drivers to contribute to the thread, impressions etc.

Hillclimb dates

Post by Teddie2003 »

The ASWMC hillclimb championship is one of the friendliest championships going and Roy will help and advise anybody who wanted to give it a try.

Even if you were born outside the "West Country" you were always made welcome, though some of them thought you were mad travelling for 6 1/2 hours from Gosport down to Tregrehan each Easter and August bank holiday weekends for a hill that on a good day only took 22-24 seconds per run. Made many good friends at the ASWMC events including Roy in a strange coloured Clan I could never get near when i was running the Imp, Stuart from Rodwell in his Blue Clan, Neville in his Davrian's and even if some of them, Geoff from Weymouth, Tony from Taunton were from the dark side of the tracks and ran those Mini engined contraptions.

Many years ago I used to regularly attend all the ASWMC hillclimb events and the odd short geared sprint, starting around Easter time and running through to around the day the clocks changed in October. Really good selection of assorted types of hills and in those days there were a fair few Imp's and Imp powered, Clan's, Davrian's and Ginetta cars running, plus some Imp powered Ginetta, Vixen and Delta single seaters as well. All the regular ASWMC drivers used to also attend the non-championship Cricket St Thomas events as well and that was where I got my first ever Class win in my 998cc Clan, beating a 1380cc GTM by 0.01 of a second.

Well worth the effort involved for anyone going to these ASWMC events and I always thought they were far better value than my two trek's up to the midlands to do Loton and Prescott. They are great hills to drive, but all the phaffing around to have two practice runs on a Saturday and then two timed runs on a Sunday really made me appreciate the way the ASWMC hills were organised and run and Wiscombe has always been one of my favourites. As all the practice and timed runs happen on the one day, so even for the "ASWMC weekend events" Wiscombe and Werrington for example, you get double the amount of runs compared to doing the two days in the midlands.

The ACSMC, also run some good events but they are usually more sprint based and John Rawlins from the New Davrian Register who runs a blue Mk8 is a good person to chat to about those events.

Steve

My first Hillclimb car in the paddock at Tregrehan, with some of those Mini things lurking in the backround. This was eventually sold as a rolling shell and went off to race in Historic circuits in France and the running gear was all transferred to my lightweight Clan that I ran mainly in the ASWMC hillclimb events.

Thanks for the nice build up Steve, and the was nothing weird about the colour of my Lilac over pale Blue clan, all of it metallic. My Wife chose the colours. My Clan was a new Luff shell built around the remnants of my steel special saloon Imp.

The remaining Hill climb events in the Southwest are:
Wiscombe Park 4th September
Wiscombe Park 5th September
Wiscombe Park 25th September (non championship)
Wiscombe Park 26th September

The remaining Sprint events in the Southwest are:
Perranporth 28th August (non championship)
Perranporth 29th August (non championship)
Abingdon 2nd October
Clay Pigeon Raceway 3rd October
Perranporth 9th October (non championship)
Perranporth 10th October
Great Western Sprint Castle Combe 23rd October.

The ASWMC Hill Climb championship will have run 10 events out of an original program of 18 events.
The ASWMC Sprint Championship will have run 8 events out of an original program of 19 events.
Most of the cancellations were due to covid restrictions and venue unavailability due to covid.

In answer to Mike re Imps competing in the Southwest, inthe last 2 or 3 years ther haven't been any except my Silhouette Chamois, but as that only has an Imp gearknob and stick, I don't think that that counts.
There has been a recent call for an under 1000cc road going class to cater for the new Citroens and Daihatsu's maybe they shouldn't wish for that as I may get my road going Chamois out and put the race 998 in it.
