Drip feeding (topping up) fresh oil once a week can actually be considered as a benefit. Well, that's the way I look at it anyway : you're diluting the by products by so doing. Stan needs regular topping up, and gets it. With the same Valvoline VR1 20W50 I choose for oil changes. Although on the advice of Scott, I have bought some Millars 20W60 to try next year in the warmer weather months.

Thanks gentlemen.

Oil from the cam cover is leaking just a little too much to leave. It’s no problem I can change the gasket. The one I used before was a cork one so I’ll use the same again.

Once I get the cam gasket done I’ll see how it runs and i know it was leaking where the engine joins to the transaxle so I’ll take another look. Maybe a job over the winter to pull the engine out.

The car was running better after a little more adjustments with the carb.

I still have not driven the car. Waiting on Bob for spares.

Well gasket arrived for the cam cover, just waiting for a brake in the weather so i can fit. May try later.

Thinking of bringing the car back into the garage although I haven’t driven it yet, apart from on the drive.

The leak is still there and weeping onto the exhaust manifold.

I will once again take the cam cover off and check that and the head.

Up side is car runs well now.

Check the cover gasket face is flat and not warped by sitting it on a known surface thats flat, one of my covers had a 2 mm gap on one rear corner that could not be pulled down by tightening hence it leaked oil, I ground it flat on a surface plate.

Well I have finally got around to taking another look at the cam cover. It has a crack in one corner up by the thermostat end. But not by the manifold. I think it gently leaks around to them.

I have another cam cover and I just dropped it off to be bead blasted, so will have to wait until next week until it’s return.

Will keep you posted.

David

Vapour blasted I hope, probally stating the obvious but soft alloy parts should never be dry "bead" blasted as the media can get stuck in the alloy and then let loose by the oil and heat and before you know it you have abrasives all through the engine.

Ifind WD-40, GT-85 and similar bike chain cleaners excellent at cleaning up alloys, followed by some good old kitchen degreasers works wonders.

Ok, sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

I’ll drop by the firm tomorrow and see what they are using as a medium.

Cheers.

Hi David,

I'll be in Fareham on Saturday and can bring down a spare cam cover for you, no charge - I have a few!

I find that it's almost always leaking from under the fuel pump gasket...

A new gasket, with a smearing of Loctite 5660 on both sides will cure it. Same for the cambox gasket.

I have a couple of cam covers. I just need to clean one of them and check there are no cracks and fit it. But has been cold up until recently, not so bad now. Will try and fit over Christmas.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Well I finally got round to starting the car. It’s been in the garage for. What seems like a couple of months. Started ok but very Smokey and filled the garage and then the house with smoke.

Runs ok but brakes seem poor, although I have still not taken the car around the village. If the weather continues to ease I’ll chance my arm try it around the village.

Smoke might be oil burning off the manifolds from a leaking cam cover gasket?

Poor brakes if its been standing could be seizing slave cylinders on the front they are renowned for that especially if the shoes have been adjusted up tight so the cylinders hardly move.?

I just replaced the cam cover with a new cork gaskets. It was leaking through a fine crack in the cam cover. Have to check if the cam cover no longer leaks. Hopefully, it’s oil tight.
