AutoSolo's - A great way into motorsport with any imp etc
In response to Mark I and Grahame C request for more imps to compete is following something the club should consider:

As part of the BTRDA’s continued drive to encourage new competitors into Motorsport, it has decided to promote an AutoSOLO series in 2007. There is a growing interest in this new branch of sport at Club level, as it enables competitors to use standard, road going cars with minimal preparation, whilst still remaining highly competitive and is, therefore, a natural lead for new competitors into other branches of the Sport.
The Challenge consists of a number of “qualifying” rounds, throughout the UK to reduce travelling costs, with a “Grand Final” run by the BTRDA in November. These events will also count for the Allrounders Championship.
The Class structure is:
A Production Saloon and Sports Cars up to 1400cc
B Production Saloon and Sports Cars from 1401cc to 1800cc
C Production Saloon and Sports Cars over 1800cc
D All other Cars.
* my local club also has a class for pre 1972 vehicles..
The series is open to anyone aged 21 or less on 1st January 2007, or anyone who has not held a MSA Competition Licence in the previous 10 years. The first round of the Challenge was run by Knutsford & District Motor Club on 21st January at Demon Teeks Direct in Wrexham and the next is the Bolton-le-Moors AutoSOLO on the 11th February.
The Challenge Rules, which include a calendar of events, together with a Registration Form will appear here in due course. For more information please contact: Steve Layton, 9 Brookside Drive, Catshill, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, B61 9LD - e-mail steve-allrounders@btrda.com.

Loughborough car club will hold an Auto solo later in the year, but also intend to do some evening only events. Just turn up and have a go. You may need to join the club though, not expensive if you just want to test out the water ! Donnington park, Sunday market site.
I did one on New Years day, great fun and I will be doing more

Good to see interest in these taking off, the first ever in the UK was run by my local club after our chairman got the MSA to issue a special permit for it (since the event type wasn't in the blue book). I did it in the Audi Coupe Quattro I was using as an everyday car at the time, which was quite a handful!
For those in the Bristol area go here http://www.bristolmc.org.uk and click on the calendar, we are running one on 25th Feb at Weston and we've already got a Clan entered. I'll be doing it in my other 2 seater sports car (the German one, not the Davrian). Also on that site under "Reference" is an article titled "SOLO explained".
It's a lot easier than autotesting, being all forwards and much more open, but retains the same level of equipment / safety requirements, ie standard cars are fine.

Now I'm interested in the 5 finishers above you - what were they driving?
Main reason wanting to know is that my Lotus recently was challenged by an 06 plate 280-odd bhp Boxster S on a track day at Croft and he found it impossible to shake off my meager 200 bhp (OK it is a bit lighter than the Boxster, and he used his brakes more than I would for a given corner).
I would have thought the Boxster would do well against most road cars considering the following it has on the handling front - including one Mr Tiff N....

I haven't got the results in front of me but from memory:
The event was won by an Elise and there was another just (0.8s over the whole day I think) ahead of me as well.
The other people ahead of me were driving Pug 309, Golf GTi and Mistibushi Lancer and they're all a lot more experienced at this than me - and a lot better drivers .
Results will probably appear on the BMC website later today.

hopefully be able to post the result and some pics later..
would recommend solo's to all impers - great fun and not much money.. £30 all day
also the dual solo (two cars on mirrored courses was ace)
all pretty much in 1st and 2nd gear - though sometimes I just could not decide!

the course were tight so I think it even power out and it was very wet - though must learn to drive the clan in thw wet - slide.....

classes for the FDMC events in 2007 as follows:
Classes and eligibility:
A. Historics; any car, registered or manufactured before 01/Jan 1975

Cars eligible for Class A shall run in that class, rather than in the

with or without forced induction, will run in the class corresponding to their
capacity. A petrol engine with forced induction, in class B or C, will move up one capacity class. A rotary engine will be classed at twice its nominal

All cars must retain the original body profile above the hub centreline, apart from accessories such as spoilers. Cars not conforming to this requirement, or one-off specials, or kit cars of an ‘off-road’ nature, are not eligible for this event.
Suspension and transmission may be modified, within their original
configuration. Tyres marked ‘for competition use only’, or manufactured

Additional eligibility requirements, Classes A to E:
In classes A to E, cars must retain the original panel and window materials
although additional panels, e.g. wheel arch extensions, and accessories may
be added. They must have full trim and seats although the type may be
replaced.
The engine must be of the original manufacture and original basic type (eg:
BMC ‘A’ series) and must be fitted in the original position, but may be a
different version, may be modified, and may be a different capacity, provided
the car is entered in the class corresponding to its actual capacity.
Cars not meeting these requirements are eligible only for Class F.
The organisers’ decision will be final, regarding the eligibility and most
appropriate class for any particular car.
As per GR F13.1; cars entered in AutoSolo’s must be registered, taxed,
insured, MOT tested if applicable, and driven to the event.
Please note, these requirements will be enforced. Tax discs must be
displayed; proof of insurance cover, and MOT’s (for cars over 3 years old)
must be available at scrutineering / signing on; and trade plates will not be
accepted.
