1966 Hillman Imp Super

Post by Patten »

Hi everyone,
Finally bought my first Imp.
Would love to know if anyone has anymore info relating to its history - Reg LGY 176D
Previously owner who restored passed, so I have very little information. I have a reciept for a V62 in 2016 and lots of old tax discs

Credit to the previous owner on the restoration. One thing Ive noticed under the car, floor, arches etc is a rubber textured sealent, not familiar with any such product?

Can see why you're grinning !
Nice one ENJOY it .
Not much to do to it?
Looks like its been restored while on its roof?
Or is that a wooden frame somehow supporting it ? which begs the question how to get it to that position or back on its wheels
Put your mark on it by tinkering , get it how YOU want it.

Looks like a nice solid example. It's the incorrect colour though - that is Carribean Blue, a 1972? colour, on a 1966 car. Paint code I think is 174? for that colour. What is the paint code on the chassis plate under the bonnet? I don't think the early Supers have the script badge on the passengers side rear wing either.
Seats look to be 70's irridescent turquoise colour too - also from a later car...

Hope you enjoy it!

Scott is right, Nice looking example, keep using it and things will not seize or dry up on you. If the restoration was done as in depth as the pictures look, take some time to get some dinitrol in every cavity on the car as that may not have been done since restoration finished get a torch and have a poke about, remove the door trims and take a look in there etc. Only buy quality parts from recommended sources and it will give you years of reliable service. Colour looks great by the way, suits the car oli will be right it is a later colour on an older car that would only matter if you wanted to win a concour event and there would be two opinions on future value either next year or twenty years time as to whether that would alter value, to me solid car much more important than colour correct for age others may think it lowers value. As i have said it suits the colour. It is not about the value though it is just nice to know you have an appreciating classic so spending a few hundred on it now adds value so that and improving the car so it is reliable is a win win.

Thanks! The chassis colour states 110.
I am taking it to a body work specialist in a couple of weeks as I noticed I can see rust on the sill beween the inner and outer sill.
I would also like to understand what sealent has been used on the bodywork. I bought this car to used, not to be stored in a garage for the rest of its life thats for sure :)

The first items that I have picked up that need attention is being able to close both doors without a run up, one of the brakes is binding and the dynamo is smoking when connected to the battery!

Colour code 110 is Capri Blue.
Wrong profile of seal is fitted if you're having to use excessive force to get the doors to latch, providing the latches are serviceable and adjusted right to begin with of course and there's no wear in the door hinges.

Get some door seals from Malcolm anderson, if the ones you have fitted are a complete round tube type they are wrong. Like these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/x2-HILLMAN-I ... 0cQAvD_BwE

Welcome to the forum and to the Imp Club! 8) Your car looks great in the photos! A really nice, solid example. It will be a fabulous basis for a reliable road car, if you put the effort in and knock the gremlins down as the crop up initially. It will be worth the effort.

I too think the colour really suits the car. I've always liked Caribbean Blue and even though it is a later colour, it suits the car.

I wonder what has been used underneath. Be sure to let us know when you find out from your bodyshop.

And be sure to keep us posted as you go. :)

Can't believe no ones told you your indicator \sidelights are on the wrong way round.
I think they SHOULD be as your car has them (sidelight outermost)

Poor design they aren't foolproof to prevent you fitting them incorrectly, unlike the Avenger rear lights impossible to fit on the wrong side, proper job.
