Thanks both.
Dave , I do have a bit of a memory test for you; gearbox under my garage bench that had the Quaife diff replaced with standard has a plastic bag with two large circlips for the screwed adjusters.....dont suppose you can remember setting the backlash and these were sent on afterwards to just clip in??!!

Re: Sunbeam Imp Sport OGP933P
Now that is a memory test at my age Mark
I can't actually remember, but it is unlikely I would have left the box with you without having set the backlash. The best way to tell is to turn the box upside down, remove the inspection cover and move the output spiders gently back and forth (both in the same direction each time) whilst watching the gap between the cwp teeth. There should be the slightest gap (about 4 thou) that you can also feel as you rock the shafts. Do this all around a 360 degree rotation and the gap should be consistent with no binding tight spots.
Atb,
Dave

Forum is almost like old times!
Must be nice and quite down there without emmets.
This time of year I recall a step-up in visitors with a lot of Europeans (many Dutch/German IIRC) amongst others flooding honey spots in Cornwall (at least t'was true when I lived in Truro during late seventies/early eighties). Spring in Cornwall is truly fabulous.

Yes, Pete; I'm suffering Proper Job withdrawal symptoms for one. My daughter is studying in Falmouth/Penryn and I haven't been down to Kernow in over a year for one reason or another. With the lockdown, it looks like the Betty Stogs and Spingo will have to wait a while yet

Yes Falmouth is booming compared to Truro 'cos of the success of the college. Very disappointed with the ghostly state of Truro last year ...Falmouth was full of youngsters and buzzin' in comparison.
Waiting for the Lottery win so I can buy a nice waterside property somewhere like Restronguet, Flushing or maybe on the Helford River! Fat chance hey!
At least you should be able to visit her later this year. Last year I booked a cottage for Christmas 2020 in St Ives ...still hoping to go...fingers crossed!

You mean the bluetac attached cardboard cutout NACA duct!! I have been wondering about adding one to feed cold air to the carbs but most advice has been that it may not work in this position.Lotus-e-Clan wrote: βMon Apr 20, 2020 7:41 pmYes ..the black highlights/trimmings will work with this too!

Re: Sunbeam Imp Sport OGP933P
Well yes the black (simulated) duct does look good on the orange ...but also it was with references to Dave's Readers' Car thread where he recently painted the door frames black on his foam grey Imp and he wasn't 100% sure about the effect - so he asked for opinions.
It was Dave that said he like the colour of your car..so I just tied the two together having noticed the cool black duct... in order to endorse/support his final decision to go with the black trim/highlights.
I haven't explained that well, have I?

Re: Sunbeam Imp Sport OGP933P
Good and bad news!
Its up and running fine.
But forgot to fill the gearbox with oil in my hurry to get it out and up the road!! Managed to run up and down the local hill twice with a stop of 10 mins in between before realising!
Probably a mile in total. Only ran gently in first and second so suspect bearings are fine but diff would probably have been dry Casing felt hot but probably no hotter than after a good run ; too hot to hold your hand on.
Pissed off is an understatement.

Cheers Dave. I am just going to fill it with oil(!) and drive it and see. I suspect the diff was dry as being the biggest problem and possibly the output driveshaft seals.

Re: Sunbeam Imp Sport OGP933P
Oh dear. If it's any consolation you are not the only one to overheat the tranny.
I used my close ratio straight-cut box (strengthened by Dave W) on 25 mile runs which included long periods over 6000 rpm and a few minutes blasts @ 8250 - ie with only a 12.5 mph top gear I regularly revved the goolies off the input shaft bearings within the tranny. I did this daily with no apparent issues until I fitted a flat floor to the Clan which extended each side of the tranny .... hence it reduced the air flow around the box. All OK for miles at over 6000 rpm until during an uphill 8250 rpm blast the tranny raised it's voice even more than usual (straight cut 4th gear scream) ie it sounded 'tight'. I backed off to let it cool and it recovered. I've since allowed for more air around the tranny and I seem to have got away with it...ideally I should fit a pump and oil cooler to the box.
OK, unlike you, I had oil in the tranny but I guess you will know if you'd taken it too far once you get oil in it and give it another run. Fingers crossed.

Re: Sunbeam Imp Sport OGP933P
As you haven't refilled it yet Mark, jack the car up and remove the inspection cover under the diff. You will be able to look at the cwp teeth with a torch to see if they have been scored or not. Run your finger around the inside bottom of the box and hope it doesn't come out silvery...
Watch you don't cut your finger on the alloy edge of the hole.
I use about two tablespoons of oil as an assembly lubricant so you may have been lucky.

Re: Sunbeam Imp Sport OGP933P
Yep, will do that Dave.
It had been run previously so their would have been a thin coating of oil on the bearings etc but wasnt sure about the diff as that was added later. Although I did look at the diff I didnt pay too much attention to how coated with oil it was.
Fingers and everything else crossed

Took the inspection cover off. Not too bad, not much to see on the cover itself, the bright spots in the photo are just marks on the cover. There is some silver evident in oil residue though. Teeth look ok but cant say from my limited experience.
I guess best to remove bellhousing and wash out diff casing.

Re: Sunbeam Imp Sport OGP933P
You've got some scoring on the teeth Mark but it doesn't look terminal. You may have a little more noise from the box than it should have, but the proof of the pudding and all that...
Wipe around the inner bottom of the box as best you can to get out as much of the particle material as you can.
See how it feels and sounds after you run it a while with oil in.

Decided to remove the bellhousing in situ. Had to grind down some spanners to fit those nuts!!
Pinion bearing looks a little blue but again not used to looking at them. Also better view of the cwp.
Not too much swarf but definitely present.

Oh, that's not good. The pinion teeth look a lot worse than I'd thought. There are 34 crownwheel teeth and only 7 pinion teeth so the pinion comes off worse in these cases.

Re: Sunbeam Imp Sport OGP933P
Unfortunately, yes. The new pinion head bearing is blued because of the preload on it after being rebuilt. The new tail bearing will probably be worse because of fewer rollers and a steeper race angle. They have generated a lot of heat

Re: Sunbeam Imp Sport OGP933P
It sometimes feels like 9 million Peter...
The first two digits are the year the transaxle was first built.
Mark managed to avoid a major disaster by stopping in time. The crownwheel and pinion were not a pretty sight but the close ratio gear cluster was fine. With the iron filings everywhere though, much time was spent cleaning everything in the wash tank. The box of bits on the left of the last picture show the items replaced - cwp, crownwheel bolts, diff gears (not due to the oil problem though), pinion head and tail bearings, input 6204 roller, input oil seal and the usual sundries. Recalculated shims, washers and preloads and it was a Proper Job (which I had when I got back last night ).
Box arrived by carrier on Wednesday lunchtime and it was back in Mark's hands on the M5 about 4pm yesterday (Thursday). Not quite a record, but close...

All seems good Dave. With aarons help got the engine back in and running in 23mins Quick test drive and smiles all round
Brakes not what they should be car stops ok but too much pedal travel despite a couple of bleeding sessions. Curiously the pedal doesnt get harder if you continue to press so I am wondering now if the rebuilt 0.7 Master cylinder may be weak
