What did you do to your Imp today?

Post by Dion »

A topic frequently found on other car forums, was surprised there is none here so lets start one.

Today I fitted the new top steering bush. Robert Immers made one from PTFE and it fitted perfectly. No loose steering wheel anymore! Of course tested it with a long trip.

Replacement piston rings arrived this morning so I set about reassembling the bottom end. Just need the head back now :)

A seat cover set also arrived today, so I was at last able to repair the drivers seat back, which had a couple of holes in the side panel at the shoulder. Forgot to take a before picture, but pleased with the finished seat.

Had mine retrimmed in leather a few years ago — well, actually I used a scrap pair of recliners from a Californian or Chamois Coupé, my existing seats were mint so it would have been a crime to retrim those. A very worthwhile mod — backrests at a less upright angle and no longer sticky on a hot day.

Today, whilst waiting for knifing putty and etch primer to dry, I drilled and tapped ( M4 x 7 ) the centre of a spare wiper wheel box spindle. The thought behind this is, considering Stan's wiper arms are a little "baggy" on their spindles, I might do the same on him and hold them a little tighter, in the interests of efficiency. As the outside of the appropriate part has a small domed effect to it, I had the idea of finding some stainless steel solid countersunk screw cups and use them upside down (countersink to wiper arm) and fix using dome head stainless socket machine screws.

Collected the overhauled cylinder head from Reg Patten yesterday.
Fitted it today. I am going to borrow a calibrated torque wrench from work tomorrow to double check the head bolts, before I close it up.
Hopefully it will be back in the car by the weekend.

Helped Stiletto owner Hans to fit a towbar to his car so he can pull his vintage Mostard Yvonne caravan. He always used his Minx convertible to tow the caravan but he wants to take the caravan to next weeks Going Dutch weekend - behind the Stiletto.
We got the towbar safely fixed to the car and tried it with a small run. The Stiletto has no problem towing this lightweight caravan - on Dutch flat country roads!

Re: What did you do to your Imp today?

For a long time I have wanted to mount a RPM gauge. Just to know what revs the engine makes. I already had a nice 2" sixties instrument, with the idea in mind to mount it next to the oil pressure gauge. I know the metal dash behind the wood already has a 2" hole for an accessory gauge. But on the other hand I did not want to make a hole into that beautiful wood. Also I did not want to remove the Chamois badge. So, I needed to find another space for it. Which is pretty difficult. I tried on the A post (looks stupid), under the left hand bin (in the way of getting in and out), above the radio in the corner (but I could not reach the remote bonnet release then), on the floor in front of the choke lever. Or on the column. Or under the dash, next to the column. That was the best place for it. Problem then it was further away so something larger would be better.

On Ebay I found a good TIM 80 mm gauge, in a black plastic pod. The most work was to get a wire from the - of the coil, under the floor, into the front compartment, and then behind the dash. Another wire was needed for 12V, another for ground and another for the light - all easy to find behind he dash. The instrument is mounted using an existing bolt from curved metal dash below the wood. No drilling was needed anywhere.

It works well, the location is a good one - easy to read while driving. It amazed me I usually never would go much over 4000 rpm.

Been working on getting my new gauge panel wired. Took the car for a little spin just to stay motivated, and pop went the windscreen. Two steps forward, one step back as usual. So I vacuumed up the glass and flogged it around anyways.

Kind of Imp related
Not normally one to get roped in by sales and price cuts I did succumb today as our local Homebase is closing down .
So I ended up buying 18 huge rubber mats 10mm thick made from recycled tyres . At less than half price I couldnt resist as they make great garage flooring .
No more lying on cold concrete for me :)

Serviced the carbs yesterday, discovering that the original cross head screws were fixed solid in a few cases, requiring a saw cut and flat screwdriver to remove. See other thread re stainless replacements. Replaced all of the O-rings and checked/adjusted float levels, reset to basic settings. Hoping to fit them today, weather permitting.

I fitted LED bulbs to my front sidelights.

Very pleased with them. Beautifully bright and white. The photo doesn't really do them justice; the difference is massive.

Standard bulbs are a feeble 4W, these are 25W (4 x 5W LEDs around the sides and 1 x 5W LED at the front with a lens too) but being LEDs it doesn't of course draw 25W, I think the actual draw is something silly like only 2.4W. There's a wide choice of LED bulbs depending how bright you want them. 233 sidelight ones fit the Imp. Mine were £12 the pair but you can get some for just a couple of quid; all are a massive improvement on the standard bulbs. (Be aware that if fitting LEDs to later Imps you may need to gets shorter LED bulbs — there are plenty available — as later lenses are shallower; no problem on mine as it has the early deep lenses.)

I wanted bright ones as I intend to use them for daylight driving when conditions are gloomy or overcast but not dark enough to justify headlights. The standard bulbs are no good at all for this and to be honest are little more than parking lights.

After work, I fitted the newly aquired RAC branded mesh blinds. They came with suckers, but that ain't the way, is it ? So I modified the four lower supports and used flange head screws to fix them. Lower in my case as it's much better, and simpler, to fix them to the lock transom and pull them up when in use. They will only provide a miniscule amount of sun/uv protection but, hey ho, they cost peanuts. I can easily modify them with a different material in the future.

Steve

The Blue one would be good for that, there is a good covering of body filler spreading from the lower corner where its been repaired but no rust around the light area. £25

The good news is I'm coming over for the Irish Experience at end of May so can bring it with me. If your not going I'm sure one of the Irish members will take and keep it for you to collect and if not why not

Bad news, it would only be fair until to wait until I've heard from Lomond26 as he asked first however will give him until end of play tomorrow to reply so will let you know Tuesday morning if its still available but we will still have other options.

Cheers

I've a number of new panels that unfortunately have some surface rust, I've used Bilt Hamber Deox rust remover with great success but it would be prohibitively expensive to buy the quantity needed for my new tank so after a bit of internet research decided to give citric acid a go which allegedly is the basis of the Deox solution anyway.

Used a 380 ltr wheelie bin, made up a bracket to hold an immersion heater element and added 25lts of citric acid powder.
IMG_20190601_123534.jpg
Put 4 Imp front wings in and it has proved very effective despite having them in for only a couple of hours at 40 degrees, after rinsing them off much of the rust had been removed :D.

I decided not to leave them in overnight just in case they dissolved completely, I once bought a wheel arch section with light surface rust, by the time it was rust free it was paper thin . I did however leave a couple of centre sill sections in to see how they turn out, as less worried about them.

Here it is. There is some blue sky reflected in the window, I was very lucky with the weather, we had rain all day Wednesday and on Thursday night but the day was dry and 16°. Yes it needs a wash!

I did also wonder about the weight of an Imp engine. Does the 'standard' figure of 170lb/77kg include manifolds, carbs, flywheel? One of the engines was complete from full exhaust & carbs to clutch, less water pump, generator & starter. I'd carried it into the garage years ago but decided it was better to have help this time.

Well its official new formula paint strippers suck, great for the environment I'm sure but does nothing for its effectiveness.

Stripped a number of panels ready for further repairs including a bonnet, removed the inner panel and it's easy to see the reason for them rusting out - absolutely no protection on the inside just bare steel.

Inner panel 30 mins at 50 degrees in the citric acid bath - only get 3/4 of it in.

Took the passenger door off the 66 Sport for re skinning, never been touched before so factory fit, had to get the screws glowing red to shift them. Interesting to note out of the 8 hinge screws 2 were short ones being 3/4" long and not 1" as they supposed to be and as all those on the drivers side.
The factory must have had a stock shortage at the time so had to use whatever they had to hand?

Today I removed the trim piece over the glove box to recover it. It's been a bit baggy for months now, so today was the day.

Repairing bonnet and interesting to see the result of the factory adjustment to get the alignment right.
IMG_20190624_141448.jpg
They have just given the rear corner a good whack to align it with the scuttle panel, it's not surprising then that replacements don't fit well. I'm sticking with the original

Bonnet repairs, rather than continuously weld the repair and then have to grind off decided to spot weld it with local seam welds.

The Nun wrote:I dont know if I would do that today, it does look rather a mess and its easy to get around and do the adjustment properly, but I suppose on the line they wouldnt have time to recut and weld at that stage, still a bodge though isnt it? Im all for keeping it as original but not in situations like that.

When I bought my Chamois, the previous owner said if you find anything that doesnt fit its how it was when it left the factory, which was rubbish as they had had taken the doors off in the past thus upsetting any factory setting, it was a excuse to cover their bad workmanship up more like.
Same as leaving the frayed door seals on, I didnt replace those as the new ones dont look right? but frayed does? and I didnt replace the carpets as new ones dont fit, but original ones with hole in the footwells look ok?

I always think to myself no if youre bothering to do a job, sort it out and put it how it supposed to be to the best of my ability, the cars werent designed to look bad Im sure?
Peter

Multiple uses still for a hammer and block of wood particularly getting the doors to fit properly, you can only do so much with the hinges and shims, sometimes the only recourse is the above tools as I can't stand the doors not being flush with both the wings and rear quarters - all the way down.

Last years restoration project

You'll be glad I'm off the same view - do your best, so you can sleep easy tonight as I cut out and replaced the rippled section.

Probably went a bit too far and stripped the bonnet apart to clean the inside of the panels :o

First time I've seen the factory dip coating on a door usually the doors have seen work and no longer visible.

Did some more sorting & unpacking in the garage, including turning the car around and putting it in the back corner in anticipation of perhaps collecting a car or two from storage on the weekend (6hr round trip...). Under the bench at right are the gearboxes plus some wheel rims and other parts, and in one of the tubs is another SOHC aluminium cylinder head - I should take a photo for contrast, 4.0L 6-cyl vs 875cc 4!

On Saturday took my green Imp to Maffra, our car club is participating in a display of Bygone British Brands (isn't that nearly all of them?!?), we had 16 cars in total from 1930s on, with one other Imp. Then on Sunday while I had the van & trailer brought another Imp home and a heap of parts. All told 1,000km covered.

Here we are then, just for Peter. Stainless dome head screw with a washer under the head slid from the open end and positioned as necessary. JB Weld squeezed into the void to affix and locate, then filed off flat when dry. I will probably put a bit of rtv sealer around each as I push them through the front panel. Screws will be shortened a little so they don't protrude too far into the void.
