Re: ManiacImp - 1966 Singer Chamois
Not wishing to sound negative, but seeing as the door is a lash up, and needs quite a bit of work to get right... would it not be a better idea to find a better door of the right type? There comes a point, and all that...

Re: ManiacImp - 1966 Singer Chamois
Thank you for your comments, guys.
Jon, yes, the pictures really only show the worst parts. To answer the question of how long the doors would take to sort out, Glen reckons a couple of days. However, they would then need filling and shaping on the car. Then again, any door needs to be made to fit the car. Imps are no exception!
If it turns out I need to, I'm not averse to sourcing a better driver's door. The passenger door is not bad at all, so I'll probably persist with it.
Brian, I'll try the scraper trick. You're right about the screwdriver possibly denting the skin. I haven't done so yet - I think - but it is a risk. I'll try your suggestions.

Re: ManiacImp - 1966 Singer Chamois
I've been attacking the bituminous sound deadening material inside my Chamois' driver's door with scrapers and an electric room heater. It's working! However, I have multiple scratches to my left hand and right arm to show for it. Oh well. I need to find or make a longer scraper to get the last bit of material out of the door. Otherwise the angle does not make for straightforward removal of material from the door lock end.
I guess when it's time to attack the passenger's side door, I'll have mirror image opposite cuts...

Re: ManiacImp - 1966 Singer Chamois
I know your reasons for removing it, but there was a reason for it being there in the first place. Without these pads, the doors will 'boing' for England! Seriously, on the road, it gets deeply unpleasant. Ask me how I know...
I appreciate your car is built for some part-time motorsport use, but honestly these sorts of things make them less appealing to drive - and you can turn your car into a noisy, unpleasant, resonant tin box very easily... that may be quick, but you don't want to drive it for very long at a time due to the NVH issues... and then it doesn't get used often enough. Ask me how I know...

^^ Indeed. Work needed first, though. Mind you, I did collect some REALLY a good door lock mechanisms on Thursday night... Star wheel ones...
I plan to spend some time on Sunday doing more prep on the doors. I'll get some photos of the insides.

Somehow, over the years, I too have become familiar with that. First things first - doesn't always mean working on the car.ImpManiac wrote:... but ended up spending some time clearing stuff from the garage into the attic. Mind you, it is now much easier to work in the garage.

The garage is a much nicer place in which to work than it was before yesterday.

I shall, Phil. I am worried that these straightforward chores are taking me so long, though. I really need to increase my pace somehow.
What you say is also true, Lars. Trying to get anything done in an enviornment that is as cluttered as my garage was is not fun at all.

Re: ManiacImp - 1966 Singer Chamois
Around '85 I bought a mint N.O.S. door, in 'transit' brown, for a Mk1. I noticed a large 'patch' in the frame where the lock goes!!
I could only assume.... as the later imp continued to be produced, with the 'burstproof' lock, then a slight stock [for claims for 'old' imps] of spare doors must have been made up from NEW doors - cut & modded to OLD door spec??
I never fitted it and it went to the lads who took 884KOE after my... erm... misfortune

I've had one of these converted doors too.
I noted that although it fits with the earlier style lock, the trim card you have to fit must be from a mk3 - they are a different shape!
Cheers,
Simon

Re: ManiacImp - 1966 Singer Chamois
Theres usually lots of oddities when cars are updated or they run short of a particular part on the production line even, as Ive mentioned before my Sport had solid brass screen washer nozzles from new, when nearly? all other IMPs had the rubbish plastic things.
As with my fathers fastback Rapier, that was right on the change over from the 1970 to the 1971 model year, and when we ordered parts for it they would this is the part and we would say not its got that one on it, it was a bitsa from each model year.
Same went for his launch model Avenger, that had features on it that we never saw on any of the others of the time.

Re: ManiacImp - 1966 Singer Chamois
Hi IMPerative. Yes, TBs are off the menu. I want to keep the car on Webers. I have Dell'ortos too. EFI immediately excludes my car from many types of motor sport and other events. Plus the carbs will be set up nicely - trust me! So it's 'carbies' and a clockwork distributor for me.
I guess-timated the potential power available from naturally-aspirated engines based on the approximate power of the motorcycles from which the TBs came. You are right, of course; more could be obtained without maxing out the injectors. Certainly the air flow would support greater outputs. Maybe I should amend the advert.

It's all change for the Maniacs at present. We are gearing up for a house move. The cars and spares will be in storage for a while - probably a year or so. However, there are some bits to do before that, so watch this space.

Re: ManiacImp - 1966 Singer Chamois
It feels like a long time since I saw my Chamois. It was January 2015. The car was collected and trailered away for storage. The memory is etched into my brain.
In the intervening time, Mrs. IM and I have moved home - three times! The last time I posted in this thread, I was living in a rented flat in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. We then began the purchase of our house up in Houghton Regis, near Dunstable, Bedfordshire. That was June 2015. At the end of our tenancy, we needed somewhere to stay temporarily, so ended up at my parents' house near St. Albans for a couple of months.
Then, in late November 2015, we moved into the house that I now own. But anyway, Mrs. IM and I moved in near the end of 2015. The cool thing about the house is that it has a garage!
Alas, the garage roof leaks and there is no light or power in there. Plus the brickwork is none-too-clever. So I have spent considerable time scratching my head and wondering what is needed to get the garage and then the ManiacImp project back on track. Then, there is the small matter of getting it all done.
The plan is finally coming together. Hopefully soon I shall have the funds in place and a concrete plan (see what I did there? ) to get the garage works underway. Then I can get all of my gear out of storage, including the Chamois, and get working on it again.
So I felt that now was the time to say watch this space.

That's great news Paul!
I trust you've made note of all the great ideas and suggestions that have appeared on here especially those you said you will use when you rebuild the Chammy...
The big question is will it be back on the road before the 10th anniversary of it falling over?

Hey Paul,
Glad to hear that you now have a garage and home for your Imp so you can crack on with it. Great stuff indeed.
Good luck with the garage so there will be loafs of photos and updates on your Imp.

Colin, that's the plan! It depends on some other factors dropping into place but I am working on it.

I am not sure, Miguel. When I bought my 13" wheels, for example, I telephoned the wheel manufacturer and they were able to tell me the correct offset. The wheels fitted well and the car handled brilliantly.
Does this link help? Are you familiar with The Imp Site? It is extremely informative and interesting.
Edit - I found this link on the forum that might help to answer your wheel offset question.

And for the R13 wheels, what the ET? Do you know? they are 5" or 6"?

Miguel,
This wheel offset calculator might be of use to you.
I telephoned R&R Alloys just to find out the correct offset for you. For a 5.5" wheel rim width, the recommended offset for standard Imp suspension is ET25. For a 6" width rim, it is ET16. For a 7" width rim, it is ET-7.
I was running 6" rims with 185/60/R13 Marangoni Heron tyres on my own Imp, along with Monte Carlo springs (approximately 1" lower front and rear) and Spax adjustable dampers. The handling was superb.
