I reckon you're right Ibbo, as Nigel lived in Trowbridge at the time so this would have been a local event for him.

Hi all. Thanks for posting these for me Colin. I rallied this car in the Rally Sport championship in 1979, 80 and 81, I had limited sponsorship from Mopar in 1979. I led the championship all 3 years but didn't win it, but class wins in 79 and 81. It was a fantastic car to drive. The engine was ultra reliable with no rebuilds in 5 years of use. Unfortunately I kept breaking crown wheels and pinions. I lost some good results because of this problem, although I managed to finish 10th overall and 1st in class ( by some margin!) on the Rothmans National 1981 with 3 teeth missing from the crownwheel and 2 minutes road penalties (Which I think dropped me from 7th). It was a fab car. I sold it a few years later as a rolling shell. I wonder where it is now?? Cheers. Mike

Its a while since I've seen that reg number, it was on an imp road rallying in the late 70's same time as I was. Saw it some years ago in Colinton on a modern.

You're right. I lived at Fairmilehead, Edinburgh back in the 80's.

It was on a host of road Imps for sprints & hillclimbs in the 60's & 70's ... and many more since.

I've had the number since 1968. It's now on my daughter's silver Fiesta so you might see her buzzing around Edinburgh.

Here's an old photo with MUD 44 on a Fiat 127 Sport in an Autotest around 1975 at Marine Gardens in Portobello.

Speaking to one of the family members of Ross's of Lochrin some years ago when they saw my rally imp they started reminising as they do . Mentioned MUD 44 was ordered by a woman and upgraded from new to 998 etc but did not like and sold on/back fairly quickly.

If you were doing the road rallies we will have spoken - I was in the white Imp with an orangey red side stripe, I have a vague recollection of the driver but can't remember the name.

It's Bob Jamieson ... Ian Forrest's mate. You'll likely remember the famous DRAMBUIE Imp - see my avatar. We had Drambuie sponsorship for 16 years .. finally on our Prodrive-run BMW M3s in the BTCC from 1988-2002.

The female who had her bright yellow Imp Sport upgraded at Ross of Lochrin to 998cc was Juliet Johnston.

They must have got mixed up with the registration number though. The same car eventually did have MUD 44 on it for a couple of years and was raced in sprints and hillclimbs by my old mate Ronnie Graham when I was living/working in Canada for a couple of years.

Jeezo ... I can remember years ago but forget things that happened last week. :D

I guess its the reg MUD 44 that is memorable rather than a normal age related number, hence the linking to the car.

I remember being at Ingliston seeing a gaggle of imps racing as a kid would have been tin tops before the migration to spaceframes long before I was
able to drive and got my first car an Imp :D still have the same car finally completed last year after 24 years off the road. :o.

4 imps and a Clan in the family must be addictive :shock. Clan will be at Knockhill for the track night on May bank holiday.

You'll see my old mate Ian Forrest there ... he is chief instructor and runs the circuit.

He just received one of only four Jackie Stewart Medals for his lifetime service in motorsports .. winning many championship in various cars from Imps to Prodrive-run BMW M3 in BTCC and nowadays in a Ligier Sports Car.

But he's mostly remembered for the Drambuie Imp days and Ingliston where he still holds the fastest lap for an Imp, (49.2 - phenominal) .... which is some achievement as Ingliston was 'the' Imp circuit for years with Gerry Birrell, Logan Morrison, John Kirk, John Homewood, Duncan Fisher, Bill McGovern, Ricky Gauld, Laurence Jacobsen and many more in the quickest Imps in the UK.

He's a baldy old boy nowadays of 61 though hehe (but still very fast round a track)

Well done to Ian on the award.

Once when I had the Rally Imp at Knockhill, Ian came over and said he used to race them and went all misty eyed

Some others I recall - Harry Simpson (occasional found on the forum) David Ogilvie in the Sportstune Imp, Hugh Chalmers ?ski from Fife well it was a long time ago and I was only little

I've just been inspecting JDU 46E as its been bought my someone local to me who got in touch. Looks a very genuine car to me - though obviously had a hard life ;).

Anyone have any more information about it......?
