its a Proper SU manifold but sadly with no make on it , both my cars run twin SUs and have done for many years .tiker wrote:Hi Dave is that a proper SU manifold are a modified Stromberg, I do like SU for simplicity over the Strom,s
The Vusky is running a C & T London manifold which is slightly better made .

Hi Dave have you ever tried modifying the Stromberg to su as your manifold seems quite rare now ?

If you have a search through my Bazza's Imps thread there's a few pics of the engine bay in which you can see the adaptor blocks. They're not very pretty, very much function before form!

Re: Nods news - Singer oil leak finally solved
Well having the week off seems to tell at least one Imp its time for some attention
Ive been using the Singer these last few day - done 120 miles and all is peachy
Todays plan was to go for a hoon in the Vusky ------------ I got as far as the driveway
Engine sounded a bit rough and certainly wasn,t ticking over right - a quick test showed number 3 was doing zilch on tickover but when revved it kicked in .
After doing a comp test and the usual plug swap about i squIrted WD40 on the inlet gasket joint --- there you are you little ∂˙©©ƒ¨®ç∆ç√ ---- inlet gasket,s gone on number 3.
So instead of going for a hoon today was spent changing the inlet gasket and whilst i was at it the inner throttle cable.
I did notice the old gasket was soft and de-lamination around the inlets but solid like new on the zorst outlets.
hope its not an " Ethanol " thing
Anyway its all done and running fine again
The joy of old cars

In case anyone was wondering heres how the C & T twin SU inlet uses the original Solex throttle quadrant and springy link bar bit

Re: Nods news - Vusky wanted to stay at home .
You can certainly see the inaccuracy of the original gasket on your photo how the holes dont really line up with the port diameters, wonder how much that affects performance and whether its worth correcting and matching the gasket to the port sizes, they do say its necessary on a highly tuned engine?

Re: Nods news - Vusky wanted to stay at home .
Today was better - 68 miles in total touring Cheddar Gorge .
It ran rich this morning on start up which wasnt unexpected given the inlet gasket was leaking - Anyway i weakened it off a tad and having checked the plug colour on my return Im more than happy with the rich tea biscuit colour all four plugs are .
Some pics which include photobombing Goats

I really must try to see Somerset IRL. Meanwhile I'll get myself a nice Cheddar cheese and a cup of tea now and enjoy your pictures - here and on FB.

Re: Nods news - Vusky feeling better .
Replaced the Vuskys reversing light today.
The old one was a cheap crappy Wipac one with a dodgy lamp holder .
Its replacement is a NOS Lucas L645 meant for a Wolseley 6/99 and 6/110.

The old one looks a bit like those they had fitted on the Rapier Fastback, seem to recall they were Wipac?

Re: Nods news - Vusky has new reversing light .
Gave the Singer a bit of a service and toon up the other day.
Im stunned at just how much crud gets sucked in the engine bay .
These filters were spotlessly clean only 10 months and 2000 miles ago. Really pleased ive got K & N filters fitted .
Also checked the mixture and timing afterwards . Shes running really well at the moment .
Oil and filter due next month.
In other news the cooler pipes remain totally leak / drip free which given the cost of the new pipes ( £70 a pair ) is rather pleasing
Zummerset must be a dusty , dirty county is all i can say

Excellent ,as usual Dave, should notice a difference now, trouble is if you drive it every day or often you don't notice the downturn in performance , it just keeps getting worse till you feel something needs looking at .

Re: Nods news - Singer gets a bit of a service.
Just a progress update .
In October last year i did the clutch on the Singer .
One thing I did fit in the " not standard " category was a roller bearing release bearing for which some said wouldnt work etc etc and said it would fail miserably.
Well its now June so nearly 8 months later and im very pleased to say all is perfect.
I had an initial squeal when depressing the clutch on first fitting but this was the spigot bush as i thought - it was a bit tight on the input shaft to say the least - it soon bed in and is now silent .
The zero clutch drag is wonderful.
I cant say its going to last forever but il report if anything goes tits up.
So far though its great
In yet more updates the new oil cooler pipes are totally leak free

Re: Nods news - Singer thrust bearing update
Ive had a standard type crack and another shatter so those arent exactly foolproof either, cant be any worse i wouldnt have thought and as you say no dragging the engine speed down has to be the good point.

Re: Nods news - Singer thrust bearing update
I have bearing thrust races fitted to both our Imps and they have performed faultlessly over many years . The big bonus is they don't wear away and on a cold morning if you depress the clutch and engage the starter the engine turns over really quickly as you are not turning over all that thick transaxle oil . That is the real bonus !

Re: Nods news - Singer thrust bearing update
Are they from another model of car or are they modified standard imp ones? interested in fitting one in rebuild, no problem converting an Imp one assuming l can obtain correct bearing , which shouldn't be too hard to do.

Re: Nods news - Summertime show weather
Just redone the Chamois sport badge as it was looking quite tatty .
For the purists amongst you are correct .
This badge was never produced .
As my Singers NOT a sport fitting a proper Singer sport badge seemed wrong so I made this myself .
Chamois part was cut and shaped from a knackered Chamois Coupe badge and the sport part is from an Imp sport with the Imp bit cut off .
joint is behind the dividing bar .
Last pic is the proper Singer Sport badge I put on whilst doing up my badge .

Re: Nods news -Badge referb
Well the Towel rail is off the Vusky , i used it tother day to drag myself out from groveling underneath and its so thin it bent .
Even this took longer than expected and was more complicated than it should be - mainly because id mounted the reversing light on it -DOH !!!!.
The plan was to cut the lower steel legs off the towel rail and refit just these as it would still give me the reversing light mounting point - however because of the towel rail thickness the angles were wrong so much bending of brackets was required to get these bits back on sans the chrome bit .
Anyway the trial fit is a success and the reversing light is exactly where it was before - the lower steel legs will still add support for the bumper .
Legs will have to come off again for painting this week sometime.
Funny how when i first fitted it it looked great but now it looks better without .
Piccies for you all resized via facebook

The now radically smaller towel rail / pram handle / nudge bar brackets are now painted a nice shiny gloss black ----- makes the rest of the car look shite though so no pics im afraid

Re: Nods news -Rad mesh tart up.
So then my window aerial on the Singer lost its top extension .
Solution is thus
1, Buy a cheapo extending aerial for less than 9 notes.
2, Saw off the bottom section.
3, Remove old part and fit newness bit using the original screw thread after carefully drilling a small hole through the bottom segment .
4, Stand back and admire the bodgeimication of it all

Re: Nods news - Supplier sticker
Anyone here ??
Around 6 months ago and after much research i did eventually find out where the Vusky was bought new .
They werent even main dealers but Rootes Agents .
Seemed only right to get a sticker made although as the rear window is film tinted it was tricky to fit given i had to cut a small bit out the right size .
Strangely both of my cars original suppliers are colours

Just a random pic from todays Haynes Breakfast club meeting - i gave it an oil and filter change when i got home - engine was nice and warm so its easier to do .
Carb setting seems absolutely spot on - New aerial worked superbly so radio 2 has returned full time now.
Its all good ATM Fingers crossed

Sidelights are in the headlights . I much prefer the cleaner look of just the single coloured lens on the front .Bobbycham wrote:Dave , what's the situation with sidelights on the Singer?

Re: Nods news -Random photo and an oil change.
And what was once sidelights are now just small amber running lights - pointless but i like them and it makes use of the old sidelights. All orange lenses are US spec Hunter ones.
I did try all clear ones on the front like the Vusky has but it looks wrong on a light coloured car IMHO so went the other way .
Vusky has all clear - Singer has all amber

Re: Nods news -Random photo and an oil change.
It would seem the Vusky is starting to die bit by bit .
A short while back the towel rail / nudge bar on the rear bumper gave up and tonight the UKs --- no maybe even the worlds last known pair of GENUINE Commer Imp Van mudflaps called it a day.
Im not surprised as they are known for rotting and splitting .
However they are Totally irreplaceable rather like the Dodo

They could be used as a pattern to make up new ones and sell them all at national? Maybe with a selection of IMP marque badges laser cut in stainless and riveted on

Re: Nods news , E.L.E - Extinction level event .
I've got 3 and a half sets of NOS Hillman ones that I'm hanging onto for the time being, early and late ones. If someone has a Sunbeam set I'd be interested in a trade or whatever.
Drew Aitchison. Messing about in Imps since 1967!

Re: Nods news , E.L.E - Extinction level event .
Playing again .
The centre boot board has had it , its about to snap in two - added to which ive altered the front auxilary rad so the valves didnt line up with the holes plus my tab to screw thread mod meant bodging up the top row of holes .
Managed to get my grubbies on some mega tough 2mm thick board - its black all the way through and bends at 90˚ without cracking - added to which once its bent it stays bent - in fact its superb stuff .
So i made a new board for the Vusky - its a slightly lighter black but that can be sorted.
PS its not available to the general public and that sheet cost £20

Re: Nods news , Starting handle hole blanking plug .
Back talking to myself again
With the US spec bumper being so far away from the bodywork the starting handle hole is very visible from certain angles and seeing as this bumper has no hole for said starting handle it all looked a bit of a mess .
I didnt want to weld and fill it in as the hole can be useful for turning the engine over etc.
For decades i had a large rubber grommet in the hole and whilst it was better than a hole it was big - black and ugly.
Anyway i found some flat grommets designed for a 32mm hole 5mm thick that fitted straight in - then it was just a case of making a decent body coloured plug to fit - drilling a small hole in the centre of the new grommet and popping it on .
Its fitted using a knurled nut from behind so removable in seconds .

All good stuff, Dave. As for the aerial fix , I think I'd have taken it to Maplins first. They stock quite a selection of different fixings at our local branch. Just sayin'
