Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Not this year, next, its been off the road for a few years, needs going over properly before any long runs are embarked upon.
Has just been through an MOT ok but I've got to fit a new rack as there's more play in it than one would like and yes the damper has been adjusted up as much as you can without much improvement, so I've got another to replace it.

Sounds good you did well to find one in such good condition, shame it won't be at this years national but hopefully next year will get to see it and actually have my car there as well, mind you there is still a long way to go with the rebuild.

Isn't it ironic - Jeff had a maroon Chamois for years, sold it and bought your Sport, Peter.
Now you've sold your Sport that you've had for years and bought a maroon Chamois!!!

No its a solid colour, just Maroon as Rootes called it, its a deeper shade than Claret, I think its just about the only Rootes/Chrysler colour that didnt have another name, why I cant guess?pbergs wrote:Gorgeous !! Always loved that colour, really sets off the car, is that claret?
Suits me as its easier to match should it be required.

Todays job
Well today I decided to pull the dash apart to remove the binnacle to strip it down refurbish the instruments, repaint the housing, apply Grahames decals, etc and a general tidy up.
But first the temperature gauge didnt work, and as there was a new one with the car I decided to change that and get it working, however it is interesting to note, see photo, that theres two different type of binnacle dash IMP water temperature gauge, the graphics are different? Theres is a tech note in the parts book referring to check if replacing so I assume it refers to this? I dont have the actual note.
Once I had the old one out I found the reason for its non functioning, a wire had come apart, so I decide to try and repair the original rather than just stick the new one in which wasnt the correct look anyway, success! after a resolder, a quick connect up and its working again Very satisifying being able to fix something rather than just chuck and renew these days, bet these days you cant even get into them without destroying the gauge.
So on with the refurb

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Sorry, but a self-plug is inevitable at this point seeing as how they do look pretty good in your photo, Peter!
Decals are a bargain £4 a set plus a stamped self-addressed envelope. Cheque payable to me and sent to address in front of Impressions. Not many sets left now (and heater decals sold out).
What paint did you use on the binnacle, Peter? (I presume it has been resprayed.) I normally recommend gloss black, then apply the decals, then when FULLY dry (24 hours) satin varnish.

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
The binnacle has be painted satin black and then the decals were applied using Humbrol DecalFix, modellers transfer fixative designed for putting decals on matt/satin paint and hiding the carrier film
You cut the decal out soak it in the DecalFix until its ready to float off, wet the application surface with DecalFix, slide transfer onto surface and position with a brush, and then wash over the top with the DecalFix and leave to dry, nothing else left to do, the carrier film disappears as it dries and the decal tightens, perfect.
They look the part and far better than anything applied by Rootes.

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Yep, as a modeller, I use decalfix too. Good stuff and avoids the 'silvering' which decals can exhibit if applied on a matt or satin surface (due to the surface being not as smooth as gloss). The only reason I recommend applying to gloss and then a thin coat of satin over the decals is that it gives an added bit of protection. The end result is visually the same as what you have achieved, Peter. The Nun wrote:The binnacle has be painted satin black and then the decals were applied using Humbrol DecalFix, modellers transfer fixative designed for putting decals on matt/satin paint and hiding the carrier film

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Its taken a while and a bit of a slog but we're nearly there with the painting at last and theyve done a superb job of it too
The hard bit is to come, not scratching it putting it all back together.
Its been done in 2 pack acrylic and baked, turning once on regulo 60, I know its not to everyones taste and many like a classic flat cellulose finish but I like a good old shine.

I didnt know and not the sort of thing you would expect really, goes with the theory they built the car around the heater then fitted the doors bit?Dave ' Linwood ' Lane wrote:Nice - the factory painted the stripe first on Singers - easier to mask off
It is more awkward masking off to do it afterwards agreed.
Always interesting taking the paint off too you see the total hidden history of the car you never realised was there but had a hint something wasnt quite right, I think a few dints had Tesco shopping trolley on them?
Anyway the bodyshop got them all out without the need to resort to any new paneling at all, they have some really nifty kit these days for getting marks out of car bodies.

Stripe area wasnt actually masked off as such - stripe colour was just sprayed on until the required area was done.
When dry just the stripe was masked off and the main colour applied -

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
I know and theyve rehung them for me shims and all, well impressed, the factory didnt paint inside the door hinge shut very well and I think the doors were all fitted before spraying at the factory? these were all done off, theyve done all the hinges and cavities and even under the wheel arches are stone chipped and painted, they said they enjoyed doing the job and so different to the modern cars they are used to working on, I think they even IMPressed themselves.glenzierfoot wrote:Looking good peter, I find your scared to touch them when them when the fresh and shinny , lol next is hanging the doors without chipping the paint , once your over that they fly together , looking forward to more pics .
Oh they also said they lost count of how many folk came into the spray shop and said they used to have one, amazing the attention they still gain these days.

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Yes Peter they did paint them with the doors boot and bonnet on at the factory , paint was very thin in thie a post area , also the door skin was never hemmed over properly by the hing , another rust area .
They probably used slave brackets on the bonnet as when you strip a original imp you can see the tell tail marks under the bonnet hinges ,
What I do with the doors now is when I do my dry build i drill a hole in the centre of the top Hing 8 mm . So when there painted and I am refitting I put a 8 mm dowel through the hole and this gets the top alignment right , then all I need do is bring the bottom in or out ,
The rear hatch was fitted and adjusted , then the pins knocked out . Painted separate , fitted and pins knocked back in . These are also a pain in the arse to fit by yourself .
Is it a chammy sport ?

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Very good tips to remember.
Unfortunately its not a Chamois Sport, it will be a 998 Sport Chamois, my take on a Sport, I resisted the BMW anyway and thats good enough for me now, a real early Chamois Sport is a nice thing to have but they only really come into their own if youre wanting to sell it for the increased value one might fetch, and if youre not interested in selling then it doesnt really matter what it is as long as it what you want and happy with, Id rather have a very good standard Chamois than a dodgy Chamois Sport if given the choice, its the body condition I look at, an original body with all its panels in A1 condition is what I want and given the choice between an A1 standard car and a rough Sport Id always take the A1 car, or course I could buy both and cheat and swop chassis plates, but of course no one would ever do that would they?
There has been a couple of nice looking early Sports for sale recently, well if they are real Sports and not been subjected to an identity change that someone could easily do where getting more money might be the reason, which I would probably have took an interest in had they been for sale at the right time but sods law, you look for year you buy the only one you can find then the next day 1 is for sale, thats life.
Mine will be ok when its finished, the rear hatch stays will be the icing on the cake though

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Thanks I will put more pictures on as and when.
All credit due to the spray shop they did an amazing job, fortunately no bodywork needed replacing a rare thing on a 50 year old car.
Basically all we did was strip it right back to metal removed all the numberous dents and scrapes which is what you supposed to do that were just filled over originally got it back to how it supposed to be then repainted it properly.

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Well the car came back for the paint shop and they said No need to worry weve refitted doors for you, great I thought saves a big job and maybe scratching the new paint, hmmm, they werent right, I had to spend a whole day and start again with those, remove the doors trail fit some shims behind the hinges remove the doors again fit some more, and in the end all it took to get the gaps correct front and rear was a 1mm shim behind the bottom hinge and 0.5mm shim behind the top, its surprising just how little makes a big difference and of course to the final look of the car, hard work lots of masking off and being careful, thank goodness that bits done, not a job I want to do too often.
Its coming along exterior trim wise.

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Thats what i thought Oli they suit the older car sport lid, gives it a more finished off and solid look.
Plus i always move my rear bumper out and up a little for better protection, what little protection it gives of course, its too low as standard in my opinion, so the ones on the bumper arent in the right position and always seem to be a bit of an after thought, oh weve forget about that, bung some on the bumper kind of thing, plus bumper mounted was obviously a cost cutting thing too, theres a reason behind the madness

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
US spec rear bumper would do all this for you and your correct - rear bumper would do more damage than protection in standard form.- hense why i use the US spec ones
Formally known as " Noddy "

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
You only have to look at the majority of vehicles, not just made currently but back then and most of their bumpers were at a height which came above the rear on an IMP, so a slight parking nudge from someone else means your brake light lens is broken, and some folk do use bumpers as bumpers a means to tell them yes you ought to stop now type of thing.
In some cases fitting an RSJ instead would be more appropriate.

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Day 3 of adjusting the doors, thought I sussed it but once the stainless strips were on it was obvious slight vertical adjustment was also required too, only a milli or so but needed to get the strips perfectly in line, so thats now been done, door locks fitted with the previously known as Noddys stainless fixings and adjusted, doors now close with the push of a finger, really pleased with it as they werent accurate enough when I got the car.
Setting up IMP doors has go to be one of the worst jobs there is on the car especially if youre not wanting to scratch the paint,
Once you get into the routine and all your tools ready its a bit quicker though.

Re: For those who asked for a piccy
Really looking forward to seeing this when it's finished, Peter.
We've heard of a blueprinted engine*, Peter, but what you are creating is, in effect, a blueprinted car!
*For those who don't know, a blueprinted engine is one that – theoretically – would be possible to get from the factory if each and every individual component was machined to the perfect size, i.e. the exact size specified on the engine drawing aka blueprint. Of course, very, very few engines of the Imp's era were perfect but because it was theoretically possible, such engines could not be disallowed in competition where only standard engines were permitted. Although perfectly legal in competition, a blueprinted engine produced significantly more power than a typical random production engine. Similarly, all Imps should have perfect panel gaps but due to the production line's annoying habit of moving, they hardly ever did.
