I went without several years ago and used illuminated led fittings to attach the plate to the bracket. One has recently failed so I may need to replace it.

Personally, I'd stick with. not without. But your car, your choice, your ideas!

More pics of the new blue saloon please. We're bored with the Vusky and the Chamois now you've got a new one to play with.

Another 'blank canvas' for 'us' all...!

I do and very nice they were as well , Rhydian said he was bored so i figured id give you all some non pic posts  .
Anyways heres some pics , I had to find a light where the cover screws are accessible without taking the the whole thing off , something slim enough to fit on the bar but tall enough to poke past the bumper .
Came up with this made by the Hollywood accessory inc. L.A California , Seemed quite fitting seeing as its a US spec bumper , its probably 50s or 60s so in keeping I recon ,I made an adaptor / fitting bar to alter the angle slightly and threaded the bumper strengthening bar to fit it ( 1/4 UNF ) from a piece of window winder , Plastic top lens was knackered so i used some clear plastic cut from a microwaveable plastic sandwich box which said +100˚C to - 20˚C proof which will be fine with the heat from the bulb .
Cover screws are all accessible for bulb replacement and ive changed the original ones for ---- yep youve guessed it stainless
The only possible issue is its probably not water tight this way up so ive drilled a small hole in the cover as a drain and sprayed it foam grey to match the car , time will tell i guess
Original bulb is jet black with age so its a bit dim til i replace it today.

Ha ha I dont think any tips you post could be classed a boring, everyone who has an interest in maintaining their IMP will want to know what other ideas folk have and how they get around problems, some members are very inventive and skillful, far better to see them here than on Facebook, which I wont use no matter what .

Just think of all your personal info thats getting stolen on such sites these days that must be a put off surely, has anyone checked to see who their IMP is still registered to recently?

Ta for the support people :D , il keep plodding on .
I still havent tried the number plate light at night to see if the new bulb is better .

In other news ive had a bit of time on the new toy , changed the 3 way bleed valve for a bolt in type it should have ( cheers Colin ) , removed and bypassed the very leaky heater valve so the heaters fully on ( for now ) and flushed the cooling system out using a hose . The crud that came out the heater would of filled a large mug :o .
Must get new rear window seals as its leaking , mostly at the top though  , metal bungs are removed on the shelf so it wont fill up at least .

Yep agreed the plate shows as good as one would without reflective plates.
A square plate is always going to be better lit using a single centre mounted light than the single standard Imp lid mounted one with long plate anyway.

Done a bit but not a lot if im honest .
Fitted a temp gauge , changed the rear window seals , changed the borked NSF wheel bearing , fitted a new top steering column bush and new gear lever ball drove it about 10 miles so far , tyres are scary , next job is the dry and totaly knacked steering rack
Temp gauge reads this at this temp

Fitted new non knackered steering rack today and got rid of the positive camber on the front , not modding this one much but just being lower helps a bit.
Ive fitted adjustable track rods on both sides as the fixed one is a crap idea . I bet the trackings out but once the other set of S/H wheels arrive and the kingpins are done il sort that out then

We were comparing the Sussex AC cars at National, especially door gaps and the three "stripes" on the C post. The variation was quite striking. Stans door gaps are quite atrocious to be honest and certainly compared to the Majors Imp. His are very neat indeed. The gutter lines and associated spot welds also came under scrutiny. Again the difference was marked between cars. Some are quite even in distance between the roof side and outer vertical section, whereas others are good one side and waver the other. I'm sure many cars of the period are similarly uneven in construction.

Misalignment and bad fit is what some would call part of the IMPs charm and how they all are, especially those selling one

Dont forget we are spoilt with todays cars that are assembled using laser targets to 0.2mm, the IMP was done with the guys thumb and and one eye closed.

More done on the new toy , both stub axles and kingpins have been changed for later grease nipple type , all four brake flexi,s changed , two out of four front cylinders changed , the brakes finally work now .
Also pressure washed the inner arches and removed a whole pile of crud
Still shed loads to do inc. changing all the metal brake pipes but progress is progress .
How in gods green earth did this get an MOT with brake pipes this fooked ive no idea ( First pic )
Ignore all the water everywhere , its off the pressure washer

Theres an area the mot tests never seems to pick up on on an IMP and thats the brake pipes that run over rhe top of the rear suspension arm where they are held down with a steel clip, ive removed this clip in the past and the brake pipe under it was severely corroded even though the rest was as good as new, and started leaking once the clip was removed so its worth checking there.
Its mainly because the pipes buried under mud that sits in this area so is more often than not damp all the time.

Engine mounts arent part of the mot, however if the tester considers the power unit to be moving around more that should due to disintegrating mounts he could fail it by saying something could move thus affecting the cars over all handling in other ways and may be dangerous?

After finally finding it the New - well really good Bailey channel it is now fitted in the Singers drivers door , I had to bodge the old one years ago as it broke just below the top of the door jamming the window , i used the bottom half original channel and the newer fluffy rubber top in the door frame.
Not ideal but needs must .
Anyway heres some pics , I turned the bailey channel over in its metal guide so the perfect unworn part that was inside the door is now visible . check out the surface rust in the door - not looked in there for yonks , i feel a waxoiling coming on soon ,
Also fitted my NOS door glass as the original had a lot of vertical scratches on it .
1 , Slightly worn but good top part
2, Bailey channel and guide separated
3, Almost perfect part now at the top
4 , 5 , and 6 , in situ
Window works perfectly

Don't know if you got my message Dave, but the proper fabric covered channel IS still available. I bought loads to do mine a few years back and it's the same. The fabric is Jet Black when new, but soon fades after 40 years!

Cheers all . Good to know its still available :) , its not the same stuff exactly if your being a pedant but very close , original is cloth i think not felt- anyway there are two different sizes used on the original , the lock end stay is a fair bit bigger than the quaterlight one , quaterlight one is way too small for the door top frame , id like a sample of it though so will email for a piece to see what its like .
Meanwhile the Singers window feels superb now :)

Changed the top seal on the Singer as well , its the same size as the quaterlight one.
Singer at least is sorted but the Vuskys drivers door is knackered big time , especially at the lock end - oh the joy of it all  , passenger door is OK though so thats something :D

Re: Nods news , Bailey channel and quaterlight seals ( Vusky

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

Back on the doors again , this time the Vusky.
I bought a pair of Franks quaterlight seals which arrive last week so as it was dry Saturday thought id crack on with the job - and what a job it was too .
First off passenger door , quaterlight rubber was knacked and has been for a long time , what i didnt realise was the quaterlight bailey channel was hanging on by hope alone and snapped in two as soon as i moved it , this meant using my last piece of NOS fluffy cloth early channel .
Im not sure if any of you have done this job but the channels and bracket are riveted together on early cars , having no rivets i used cut down roofing nails , they are the right diameter , have big enough heads and do rivet up if hit hard.
Rear channel was also quite bad but i managed to use a combination of the newer fluffy rubber channel for the top part and a decent bit of original for the part inside the door , quaterlight didnt put up a fight which was good and it all went back together quite well.
Drivers door was the other way around , Bailey channel on the quaterlight was a genuine NOS Early cloth one i fitted years ago and was good as was the rear , quaterlight put up a fight this time and didnt want to fit with the new rubber in the slightest , turned out the frame as a bit out of shape - i got there eventually.
Seven hour job in total with tea and curse breaks

Just some stuff re. the Singer after the superb WWW.
Some of you might know I made a slight technical boo boo when fitting the rear shocks the other week , I managed to get the throttle cable the wrong side of the shock , this pulled the cable and gave me a bit of a fast idle , after trying to scrounge a trolley jack at WWW to fix it i gave up and just unclipped the outer from the bulkhead which solved the problem temporarily .
The other issue i had after the sheep fair was a knocking from the OSR on larger bumps or dips ( of which there were loads LOL ).
So today ive ----
Sorted out the knocking which turned out to be the top bushes on the shock a bit too squished , ive tightened the top nut and replaced one bush .
Sorted out the boo boo re, the throttle cable .
Fitted a pair of NOS rear spring top rubbers , car sits higher even after a run but suspension feels much nicer , just a shame they are the later non membrane ones but beggers cant be choosers .
Fitted the Coventry climax cam box cover I got from Clark
Checked the plug colours after the 400 odd miles done on the WWW .
Some pics , plug ones are in order 1 , 2 , 3 , and 4.
Average of 38 MPG which given Saturdays run isnt surprising
