This is the kind of postings that makes me realise a) how much I have to learn and b) how much I have to do to two of my cars.
It's quite inspirational though and doesn't put me off as I'm a great fan of the "learning by doing" philosophy.

Re: 68 stiletto Restoration
Floors done got fed up with welding today so decided to paint, the zinc primer is very hard if you get it too thick it chips so rubbed it down 400grit just to key and put a coat of red oxid on. A bit old school now I suppose but it drys softer and dents when knocked rather than chipping ,the different colours also make it easy to see if you miss
just stone chip then when inner wheel arches done

Lower front panel was not to bad but the spotwelds had swollen due to corrosion in the seam so cut it back about 40mm wide

Have made this to same profile as sample I think its original can anyone tell me if the cut out at the end of the curve is left open for water to drain out are does the inner wing weld into it ?

Hi Noddy thanks for that it hard to know when you don't have an unmolested imp as reference I would think the inner wing just bridges it so leaving it open to drain thanks for the speedy reply

Have also been pushing along as much as I can reconditioning at home instruments posed a small challenge as all the pointer's were very faded and needed to be taken apart and the bezels were all scratched and some type of sealer between the glass had hardened and gone to dust

Re: 68 stiletto Restoration (SRC 527F )
This one is for ImpManiac welded bottom of a post to sill and let in a small rectangular strip for wing drip edge to spot to, welded it on 3sides straight down to sill then while still hot tapped it out to suit wing don't think I could have got shape before welding good thing is its now seam welded all round so no water can bleed through to inner wing .I will put door back on before welding lower wing back on

Re: 68 stiletto Restoration (SRC 527F )
Did this a while ago when I first got welding again did it due to the thicker matl just to get used to it and get my hand back in so to speak when I cut it out and rewelded the recessed end bit for bolts to fit I tacked it up bolted to the car so there would be no shiming reqd although I am confident its good I don't intend to use it on the finished car if I can find I good one at a reasonable price .Plenty of time yet

Re: 68 stiletto Restoration (SRC 527F )
The only panels that will fit spot on are the original factory supplied panels and even they have to be set and jiggled a little to line up correctly, any other repro panels wont go straight on, well they will but it wont look right, it would be "near enough" as many say.
Always try if you can to find original panels, they might cost more but you will make up for it in time saved getting it to look right.
Problems crop up when someone has removed an original panel in advance of getting the repro replacement only to find it would have been far better repairing what was there on the original rather than faff around making the new one look like it supposed to.

Re: 68 stiletto Restoration (SRC 527F )
Those inner panels (Radford) don't fit at all without serious chopping and welding. It has been mentioned once or twice and it's a highly emotive subject for some.
Tbh, I've seen cheaper and better results using the outer arch from a Fiesta (£14) - it took similar cutting and welding and looked similar once fitted. The labour costs were the same. But it was thicker steel.
I really look forward to seeing this car finished, it's going to be beautiful.

Cant find anything thats exactly right, I would ask Malc, or Bob Imp Spares, but youre looking for something along these lines, you could have a look through the Bresco fixing site too, there maybe something you could adapt there??.tiker wrote:Thanks peter when this car is finished I will have to list credits
I doubt many twin headlight IMPs still have them as the owners dont realise there should be an abutment stop at each end of the headlight trim in the body to assist in its security along with the 2 central wing nut fixings.
Sorry the photos not too good but you should see what it needs to be like:

To give you some idea how it works heres a sketch looking from above through the headlight mounting (headlights not shown) so you can see the stops just rest against the bezel thats all to stop it rocking.

Doesnt look at all right if you fill the seams so they arent visible, a glaring mistake, and obvious its been done by someone who doesnt know what an IMP should look like.

Tidy work, as always, Gary.
I'd leave the seams visible too. As mentioned above, that is how Imps left the factory.
