1972 Clan Crusader

Post by Keith 'Supaimpy' Laming »

Ok here it is, bought from Ebay up near Ellesmere Port and brought home in the back of the company truck.

Image

The car has not been on the road since January 1987 and seems to off had several owners in that time.

Anyway first job was get it in the garage and strip it right back down to bare shell.

I'll have to find pics of the powder coated suspension etc.

Then a change in circumstances meant a move so car had to stand outside so it had to get the doors fitted

Image

The plan is to Hillclimb and Sprint the car whilst remaining road legal. So the glass sunroof that a previous owner fitted to replace the webasto type had to go.

Image

Image

Not much fun fibreglassing at the moment to cold really , you can just see the heater outlet hose in the pic. Unfortunately the board seems to off stuck to the inside, I'll have to sand it down before working out the best way to fit a headlining.

More to follow

I guess its too late for you, but the advice I got was to use an alloy sheet coated in release agent to fill the hole. Just did my Clan last month and it came away easily.

astralis are going on an Imp, one of the other projects!

re the ally sheet, I didn't have any ally, spoke with some of the fibreglass guy's (loads in Poole for some strange reason !) told to use a piece of faced hardboard, paint with loads of pva then wax it, seems not enough wax, no great problem, just grind of the board. Quite happy with the fill, just the edges to sort with a skim of filler and sand back the top layers are tissue as opposed to csm.

So has anyone replaced a Clan headlining?and should it tuck under the screen rubbers?

My Irish Clan had the headlining fitted behind the screen rubbers before the screens were fitted, yes, and as far as I could tell the material which looked like a brushed light grey nylon type which was also sponge backed was just glued directly to the inside of the roof.

Front radiator and fan now fitted

Image

and slot cut for air intake, but will it be big enough, trying to find a formula for air intake to surface area for radiators and off course the air outlet.

Image

Also want to avoid the issue of water getting in under the bonnet if I just cut a grille in the bonnet. Might just end up copying Pete Richards and others but put a tunnel/chimney under the bonnet to actually force air up and out.

Seen Erics which has a bonded in bulkhead which is another option.

Well after taking Supaimpy out this morning for a spin round Poole N Bournemouth got home and decided to crack on with the Clan roof.

Image

If weather remains reasonable I'll get the Clan out and wash it off then clear the garage of bodyfiller dust!!!!!!!! tomorrow

Radiator pipes on order, 32mm to match radiator inlet and outlet, then its just header tank and electric pump to sort out at the rear.

New cage has arrived in kit form so need to set it up and then get it tacked together for a proper welder to finally weld it together.

Hmm June 1st is looking tight!!!!!!!

So most of cage now done, just the diagonal to make up and fit.

Image

Also front rad pipes for going thru the car are made and just now need to find out if I can just paint them black or whether bluebook specs a colour, seem to remember something about red for coolants.

Image

rear pipes thru the bulkhead

Image

and thru under the tank when they are fixed I can measure for the radiator connections and decide where battery will end up

Hadn't considered LED's. gave up trying to find decent afFORDable front indicators so mounted a set of trailer lamps behind the escort len's.

Like most things on a Clan always more than one way to build it, last few weeks has seen it moving on again, brake system now has fluid in it for first time in years, need to finally weld the steering column now I've got the seating position sorted.

Dash lights fitted, led indicators and electronic relay , hmm still too fast grrrrr going to have to investigate resistors, fuel gauge working, swiches fitted, headlmps rewired, washer bottle and pump fitted

Next step is finish the dash, need to reposition the switches as can't reach them when wearing seatbelt/harness.Also need to find where I put the speedo cable

Brakes seem to be ok , no drop in fluid and nice firm pedal , infact better than the Imp, so need to check out master cylinder size on the Imp. Need to get back under the car to fit a new fuel line must see if Clan Club have the plastic line in stock and also need to find where I put the Clan Oil Cooler brackets and the oil pressure gauge line,

Seems the Clan takes up the space of 4 cars when its in bits and the bits seem to runaway and hide so you spend loads of time looking for them :D :D :D

Well Paul I need to sort out a few things but the aim is defo for the Clan Party at the factory, however when the sun hits the road again I sense the lure of two wheels again !

Image

Now the electrics are coming together it suddenly feels more like a real car rather than a pile of bits, bear in mind I've never seen it as a complete car. Going to try the additional bulb route this evening to slow the indicators.

Rodwell Motorsports have the engine parts ready for the Imp so need to build that engine as well and then look into fibreglass doors for the Imp.

Keith,

You could try a LED Flasher relay to sort your indicators. Available from Car Builder Solutions - £13.00 + VAT.

its is an electronic flasher, and should be compatible with the led's, going to try putting a relay coil inline as a resistance first off as thats easy to try, maybe fit side repeaters if thats successful

be the fuel tank and then try finish the front end this weekend, really got the bug again at the moment to crack on with

Electronic flasher units will work LED indicators but as you have both found they flash too fast. The simple answer is a specific LED flasher unit as I mentioned previously. The alternative is to fit resisters as Peter K says. Suggest you do a Google search for LED Flasher Units.

Most standard 'electronic' flasher units are designed to flash twice as quick if only one bulb is working, it needs the current draw of 2 x 21watt bulbs to flash correctly. If they see only 21watt they flash quickly to alert the driver to the fact a bulb is out. Led bulbs won't draw more than a couple of watts i would guess, so the problem of the quick flashing. Either you fit a resistor to fool the flasher unit or you need a special LED unit.

try these http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/Resist ... her-Units/

Right well moved on, I finally go the dash lamp in circuit and then I had all the flashers going at the right speed, trouble is theres no hazard switch on the car!

So fitted bulbs to the rear and that seems to solve the problem, still to try putting relay coils inline to see if they give enough resistance.

moved on to other electrics, just the fuel pump feed to put to the pump, forgot to build one into my loom :( when I rebuilt the rear loom.

Can anyone tell me the route of the oil pressure capillary line for a Clan? and what length it is approximately? still need to clamber under to put a fuel line in and if oil line follows same route may as well do both at once.

Its starting to really feel like a car not just a pile of bits, and its never been this complete since i've owned it and as the latest Clan Mag says lookslike they'll be a few resurrected Clans at the birthday party. :D

Little progress on the car, been busy collecting parts though as somehow hurt my back and not exactly mobile.

Seats next now i've got the distributor and carbs sorted (Thanks Malc and Eric) got a plan for an exhaust involving Jetex bends and a bike can across the back, turned the car around going to have to make a plan for getting the Clan on and off the trailer.

Then theres the small matter a 998 to build and get the Imp back out sprinting.

Progress, well just alternator left to wire up then its all the electrics done, interior and dash just about complete, need to find a speedo drive peg . Now waiting on parts from Jetex for my exhaust and few stromberg parts .

Need to measure the oil cooler hoses although not keen on the Clan factory position so that might change yet.

Rolling towards County Durham Clan birthday party, and first time on the road since 1988!

Why not make a bracket to support the silencer to hang off the water pump ? the whole lot will be as one then with no stress and you wont transmit noise and vibration through the body ... which acts as a fabulous amplifier being wood and solid :-)

not running the standard Imp water pump and the bracket would end up like the forth bridge, it may like all things develop that way but for now the priority is to get the car running

Well car now moves under its own power, had to change cylinder head this weekend as discovered the one fitted had a crack, still all done now.

Gear selection a bit stiff so need to check oil levels, rebled clutch and brakes ,so left with seats to fix, wire the master switch resistor in place, and finally fit the doors!

Anyone got an air filter for a 28/36 dcd weber?
Then just an MOT to arrange

No I'm going for single colour Ford Radiant Red all over although engine cover may end up black finally. I used gravitex on the low part after looking at various Clans and seeing the stone chips on the lower regions.

I think the two tone looks good on Irish Clans with the lower front light pods but prefer the older shape pods of a Crusader myself.

Love the jazzy checkerboard door cards! 8)

Back shelf treatment is interesting. Is there something functional beneath the area between the damper turrets ...or does it act as as additional stiffening?

And what have you used to trim the roof and A pillars? Mine need a retrim ...

I agree and I am unanimous in that, the Clan sill angle is perfectly designed for stone chips, not thought about by the designer, where practicalities go out of the window,
and the wide flat top sill ideal for soaking your trousers in the wet.
