My Hillman IMP Super 71'

Hi Guys, I just thought I'd try use the forum abit more so I've opened this topic so anyone can ask me anything about my little imp and see what I'm currently doing to it, So I've recently just re-done with the help of my dad the bonnet lid after I got sick of it looking tired, although I'm still looking for the anti-freeze sticker I am quite happy with the result, looking to fit my strombergs soon too! :D

Thanks, I much prefer the more wash-out coloured imps but I think I'd keep it this blue as it stands out everywhere I go, plus I can never lose it when it's parked up :lol:

Hi all, managed to put some more time in over the bank holiday and get the chrome handles fitted back on along with the number plate light, also spent some time gutting out the car see below

I decided while the handle mechanisms were off I'd give them a good clean as they were pretty grotty and covered in oil so I gave them an oil bath and scrubbed them with a wire brush to try and remove abit of the surface rust after doing this I managed to get some autosol out to clean the chrome handles and give them a nice shine although this didn't work as well as I'd hoped as I think they could do with re-chroming and for anyone who doesn't know what auto-sol is it's the best chrome
And metal Polish I've come across this far, used it on many of my race bikes frames when they've been polished

After cleaning the number plate housing out and giving it a thorough clean I decided to fit it while the weather was nice and managed to fit it, used abit of gasket sealant to make sure the seal didn't leak as it was quite tarnished but until next time it will manage! Photo below shows it nice and tidy ready for the anti freeze sticker when I get one!

I then realised the car smelt of mould slightly so I took off the sun visors and also took of the rear headlining board which were quite mouldy and put them to one side to clean soon, I then saw that a couple of vents were hanging off above the window so took them all out and also gave them a scrub with auto sol and re-fitted.

After this my uncle and dad gave me a hand changing the single weber for some twin strombergs, the imp was raised slightly...

As you can see this is quite clearly the safest way to keep an imp off the ground :D :oops:

But after changing the carbs I'm looking to make a custom job of the air filters, I have some motocross filters lying around and was thinking of making a bracket to fit onto the carbs to make them similar to bolt ons, any opinions on this?

And to finish, I have these rocker switches under my dash, any ideas what these do anyone? So far I know that ones turns the heater on... And one keeps falling out :lol: :oops: can someone please give me some advice on the mystery rocker switches, be posting soon! watch this space

Mystery switches have been added by a previous owner as they only ever came with one , maybe rocket launcher and ejector seat :lol:

To stop them falling out put a plastic cable zip tie around the perimeter of the switch at the back to hold up tight against the back of the switch panel. :idea:

The middle is the heater blower, as standard, you can use the other as a spot light switch and/or a neat electric fuel pump cutoff switch, ideal anti theft measure?

Well I've just tested them both and I can confirm that one isn't a rocket launcher and the other isn't an ejector seat! :lol: I've no idea what they do but one, I'm thinking of removing them and adding different ones, but first I must figure out what they do, I figured they'd been added by a previous owner, although cable ties are one of the best ways in keeping things together along with duck tape, if you look closely you can see my choke cable tied with cable ties :lol:

To add a few things such as spot lights and a high level brake light and fog lights etc

So I finally managed to get everything sorted and its up and running again but currently won't start, had a great run out in it earlier this week, will post pictures soon :D

Imp caps are 7 PSI except early vans which were 4 PSI

I knew that the pressure was not 15Psi and on checking the earlier Rootes WSM141 it specifies 4 Psi for all cars.
You are correct in that the later Chrysler WSM141 gives 7Psi .

I actually bought the rad cap that's in the pics when it was my car... After scolding myself when the old one fell apart when I was next to it, still have the scars now!

Hi All,

Been pretty busy with work and my new bike :o so I've been neglecting my imp for a while but managed a ride out in it as last mentioned and all seemed well, after then leaving it sat it managed to flood the carbs, anyone know anywhere to get a regulator? might try demon tweeks or something and pulled it out tonight for a good wash as it has been sat and video'd the problem I always seem to get..

The plugs before I cleaned them all including the distributor points (the car was running really rich at low idle and lean at fast idle before I had them set)

Dashboard needs a good fix up, seems to be holding itself together at loads of different angles (look at the glove box)

The video below shows the engine problem I have, no idea why it is in 360p, filmed it on my iPhone so should be higher but its the sound I need advice on, when I apply the throttle notice how it struggles to rev then once it starts revving it's fine, does this much worse when it is cold it literally sounds like its dying, it sounds like the revs retard (like hitting a limiter on a bike) but it struggles to pick up

Unfortunately I haven't, I've discovered the rocker cover gasket appears to be leaking and need to get around to getting the car up to work and dry storing it for a while so I can work on it (hopefully to get it resprayed while I'm at it) but when I start the car now and once it warms up it seems fine until I try to set off, it then seems to lose power and revs as I let the clutch out and I can't understand why it's doing this? any help would be appreciated :D

Are you still on the twin Strombergs ? , sounds like they are really weak just off tickover , im going for an air leak , possibly throttle spindles which Strommys are prone to or an inlet manifold leak. Try spraying WD40 aroiund the throttle spindles and inlet whilst its ticking over , test one part at a time , if the engine suddenly dies off where your spraying then thats where the airs getting in .

Cam Cover, IMPs dont have rockers, unless its maybe Mods and Rockers 8)

Use Hylomar on the cam box cover side , this helps it seal and should you need to remove the cover again the gasket stays on the cover and therefor can be re-used if required .

Of course it might just be the retaining nuts have slacken off, this tends to happen on IMPs, make sure when you refit the cam cover spring washers of some sort are fitted or use a self locking nuts?

Sorry cam cover hahaha silly mistake, I'll try the WD40 trick in a moment when I get it started soon, I'll probably refit spring washers too, thanks for the help Noddy and Nun 8) hopefully it will start without me having to charge the batt :lol:
