The stanced '67 Imp Super - SOLID DRIVESHAFTS
Oh god, What have i done. I've got another one of those bl***y Imps
Of course thats not what im really thinking, I'm really excited and i cant wait to get it back to start stripping it and rebuilding it.
Me, my dad and Chris went over to Dick Tompkins barn to have a look at a shell he had told me about. So we got there and Dick showed me the shell but as soon as i walked in the barn i saw this little brown racer with taped out lights and race numbers. I looked closer and i could see an old roll cage, an old racing seat with harness on the drivers side but a standard seat on the passenger side. Its been stripped out inside and has a big revcounter just to the right of the steering wheel and an extra pod in the middle with three gauges on it. The cars been seriously lowered for curcuit use and will definatley have to be raised on montes for road use. From what i could see the bodywork has no serious issues being relatively solid.
Plans for it are to drag it back home (hopefully before national so i can get a few bits on the autojumble), give it a damn good clean and see what needs doing and then start doing it.
I only got one picture because i couldn't really get to it, Does anyone recognise it and do they have any photos of it racing. The driver's name was on the door, Keith someone, I can't remember the last name. It's brown with a black roof and a yellow stripe down each side.
Anyway i'm off to carry on being excited

Hi everyone.
Me and my dad made our way over to Dick Tompkin's garage to pick up the Imp.
It's an awesome little car, i just love the way it sits and the colour scheme is so period.
But guess what i could see under the rear part of the passenger side sill
Yep, its a mixture of glass and rust....... Oh god
Anyway we got it on the trailer and brought it home.
I thought i had lost the keys but you will never guess what!! They were on the bonnet. I had put them on there just after we put the car on the trailer at Dick's garage and they were still there when we got home. How the hell they stayed there for 25 miles i dont know!
I jacked the rear wheel off the ground to have a look at the brake and what sort of spacers were being used and i kind of got sidetracked
It is pretty bad in that corner and i dont think the other side is much better.
I found a couple of cans of paint in the car but i dont think it's quite enough to do the whole thing
Oh well, at least the dog likes it. Unfortunatley its a bit too low for him to fit under
Yes its going to be a lot of work but i've seen worse and the front end and the floor is in really good shape.
So, Let the work begin

Hi everyone.
I have started to take a few bits off like mirrors and a couple of the gauges.
Also gave a bit of the roof a polish to see how the black came up.
Quite unhappy about this dent because I dont think i can get to it to push it out.
Proper work will start probably after the national when we have got some panels

Hi everyone
I've finished stripping underseal off the front passenger inner wheel arch and i'm very pleased with how solid it is apart from a hole at the front of the sill
This is the underseal i got off the arch.
There is one in the same place on the other side.
This is the state of the sill after the outer was cut out.
Also took the harness out.
This morning we tried to adjust the coilovers to raise the front up so i could get the car in the garage but we didn't have a C spanner that would fit so we just put some standard springs in. It does look a little bit funny but i can sort the ride height out when it's nearly done.

Hi everyone.
We have been busy at work grinding, cutting and welding the Imp.
I started by jacking the car up nice and high so we could get underneath easily.
Then the inner part of the sill was cleaned up so that we could weld new metal to it.
My dad went to start welding but soon realised we were going to need more of this.
Then some of this happened.
New bit of metal that we can weld the inner sill and the floor to.
Done for today. The green bit is from my other green Imp when we cut the engine lid up for metal.
A pair of these came before national.
Also Chris gave me a nice shiny battery tray.
I bought a couple of Super Imp badges at national to go on after spraying.
Payed £15 for 6 litres of sandalwood gold that Ian Toony has been dragging to national for about 10 years

Hi everyone
We carried on welding the rear corner on the brown turd today.
We drilled some holes in the inner sill so we could plug weld it to the floor edge.
I had made a template yesterday so we cut out a plate to be welded in.
This is the repair panel clamped in place so we could get the inner arch and floor lined up correctly.
This is the end of the sill before we made a plate for it.
I made a template and cut the metal out and dad welded it on.
Thats about it for today, Hopefully tomorrow we will finish welding the floor then we can start to weld on the outer sill.

Hi everyone.
I feel like we got loads done today We won some rear arch repair panels on ebay for £60 before the national.
Today dad cut out the old arch which was made of rust and filler, we sanded the surrounding area before cutting the arch off so we could see what was good metal and what wasn't.
Sanded around the arch, Before cutting the arch off.
The top part of the arch was still quite solid but there was no point in messing about cutting bits off when you can replace a whole arch.
The rear part of the arch is quite bad and it was made of filler.
Tried a panorama picture of the old arch before cutting off.
The new arch welded on.
The return edge of the inner arch was gone nearly all the way round so we cut about 1 inch off all round and tapped the remaining inner arch outwards so that we could weld that to the outer arch creating a really strong structure.
Need to sort this out with some new metal.
We also got the sill extension welded on.
Look at the difference in size of cutting wheels , the bottom one has had 2 and a half days cutting
The spring cone needs some work aswell.

Today we tackled the rear quarter and i knew it was bad but i wasn't expecting to find what i did
This is what came out from the corner. Filler, fibreglass and a big piece of aluminium
After it was cut out.
This was the panel we made out of an old engine lid. This will need blending in with a skim of filler after having the welds ground down.
After the front bit was welded in i moved to the back part and i could see the filler underneath the underseal and there was a big blob of fibreglass on the inner side in the engine bay. So i got a screw driver and a hammer and punched it out from the inside then wire brushed the outside to clean up the metal. As you can see from the picture there isn't much left but i'm sure we can do something to sort it out
I've put it in the garage and i'm going to forget about it for a day and then i will start making templates and cutting out metal so that dad can get straight to welding without having to mess about for ages making repair sections.
I can imagine the car was never very succesful because it must have been weighed down so much by filler, fibreglass and other various bodges

Hi everyone
Well happy with the rear wing now We applied the filler on tuesday night and did a bit of sanding then yesterday got it about right before painting the wing in anti rust primer. Now it's all in one colour its a lot easier to see where it needs more work and where the attention has payed off.

I am particularly happy with the sill extension (last pic) and where the wheelarch fades out near the bottom then the top line of the sill goes from there, It just looks right to me
It still needs a little patch on the bottom of the rear corner and then we can move to the engine bay

Yes, IIRC, the two colours for Spring Specials were Silver (a la Brindle's car) or Gold (same as Colin Gunn's one) - when you say gold it was quite a bronzey-gold... you can see it in the door jams and under the dashboard.

I feel like i have made quite a bit of progress today
I started today by heating up and scraping off all the underseal in the nearside rear wheelarch just so that i could see how solid the metal was and so that the spring turret could be welded.
This is the rot on the spring turret.
We have welded this up but about halfway through we ran out of welding wire so i will get some tomorrow.
The welds at the bottom of the sill extension were still just bare metal so i painted on some anti rust primer to protect it.
Also i scraped off all the underseal and stonechip off the main sill so i could see the consition of the metal and i am very pleased to say it is solid as a rock, aside from some surface rust which i treated with some rust remover it was fine.
All the underseal scraped off.
I forgot to take a picture of it when i cleaned the metal but it looks good.
I also painted this in anti rust primer to protect it.
Got the little brother bolting the wheels back on for me

Hi everyone
Got a few pictures of the car
I spent a long time getting this bit right and its very nearly there, I thought at least if its in one colour it should be easier to see where it isn't quite right.
The rear corner (above^) needs a tiny bit of finishing but I'm pretty happy with it.
Apart from this bit of the front wheel arch, I'm pretty sure there isn't any more welding to do on this side
The driver's side sill extension has been cut off and I am very glad to report that the inner part is alot better and alot more solid than the other side
Inside, By the way I did put rust remover on before taking the picture which is why it looks shiny
Managed to get a shot down the sill Looks pretty solid. I do want to try and spray something down there though like waxoyl. And yes I can see light at the end of the tunnel......... unfortunately

Hi everyone
I havent updated this in a while, yesterday i got the Imp out the garage and wire brushed the paint and filler off of the rear drivers side arch to see how bad it was.
The front part wasnt too bad with only a bit of surface corrosion.
I knew this bit wasnt right but i didnt know it was this bad
That hole was filled with this
This was the other bad bit.
Today we cut that arch off and tacked in the repair panel making sure i measured everything to get it in the right place.
We also cut out the battery tray and the rotten metal underneath it but i didnt get a picture of this.
I will update tomorrow with more pictures.

I got the Imp out again today.
The arch and sill extension tacked on. We got the sill extension welded on properly after this.
This is what is left of under the battery tray
I happened to look at the rear brakes and suspension when i putting rust killer on in the engine bay and saw these

Hi everyone
When i was at the trial at kensworth yesterday Dick Tompkins had brought an Imp front panel along that has a decent(ish) heater box that we can cut out and use for the race car.

Hi everyone
My dad has cut the heater box out of the front panel we were given and i have treated it with rust killer and it looks relativley solid, we just need to decide how much of it to use.
This radiator was fitted to the car when i got it but when i removed it I noticed it was twisted
Anyone know if it's still going to be any good, The rest of it looks spotless, i'll fill it with water and see if it leaks.

No it hasnt been crashed
I havent updated this in a while, i stripped all the underseal off the passenger side a couple of weeks ago but never got round to uploading the pictures.
Sorry for the crap pictures but you get the idea.
The only hole i found on the whole floor was this one. (not the two roll cage holes, the one on the very left of the picture on the corner of the floor)
Not much has happened with the car lately due to the current situation, but its getting there slowly

Hi everyone
when i got back from school today i went outside and started stripping the black underseal off the front end of the car.
Before i started.
I also started to remove all the screws which hold in this heater matrix which was used as an extra little radiator for racing purposes.
You can see here where the heater box has been cut about for the matrix, this is the box that was made up with the "lid" taken off.
It was a bit of a bother to try and get the matrix out but i did eventually.
And this was afterwards, I love this photo. I know i havent taken all the underseal off yet but i will do that when i remove the other sidelight/indicator unit.

I took the horns off first and i will clean them up and spray them for when they go back on.
I started taking a few things out of the front aswell as the horns.

Got quite a bit done today.
We finished welding on the arch.
Then we started on the lower part of the rear drivers side wing.
This is what we cut off the lower edge.
This is when we had finished for today, it doesnt look pretty at the moment but when it's finished it should look fine and it's solid which is the main thing.
These are the other bits that we need to do.
Lastnight i started cleaning the front indicator/sidelight units and i'm pretty happy with how they look now.
I also found both of the rear pocket bottoms, they need cleaning and the vinyl glueing back on so that will be a project for tonight.

Hi everyone
I dragged the L4 engine i was given out so i could take the head off and have a look to see how bad it was
Got the cambox cover off and the camshaft, carrier,shim and bucket all looked nice and clean
Then i took the cam carrier off undo-ing each nut a tiny bit at a time praying i wouldn't hear a snap , I made sure all the shims and buckets went back in exactly the same place as they came out.
Then i went inside and grabbed an Imp haynes manual just to remind myself as to which order to undo the cylinder head bolts, undo-ing them again only a tiny bit at a time.
I carefully lifted the head off and made sure i didn't drop the timing chain down into the depths of the engine.
It doesn't look too bad to be honest, looks as though it might have been run a bit rich.
The pistons look as though they're ok but are again covered in carbon.
This is the only bit that worries me a little bit, there is little bits of metal missing in a couple of places on the top of the liners.
I will get the sump off and get the pistons out so i can check the piston rings and the bearings.

Rolled the Imp out of the garage because dad had been having a go with the new sander he bought for the car
It is brilliant because the bottom/sanding face covers a large area and is very flat which is vital for getting the panels right.
Just the one picture of the rear driver's side arch
Sanded abit of the black paint off the roof to find the original gold paint

Got home to find the hole at the front of the car welded up and properly shaped with a light skim of filler
The sander i mentioned yesterday has to be the best £16 I didn't spend (see what i did there ) it is brilliant for the long flat parts of the car and gets them straight as anything

The whole front of the sill has been welded up Thanks Dad
Just the battery tray, small hole in the floor and a small bit of corrosion on the front left wheelarch to be welded up and it should be solid

Quite happy with the progress made the last few days
Between us, me and Dad have got the driver's rear quarter about right, it will need a bit of finishing when it comes to prepping for paint but I'm quite happy with it
I need a front seat, the same colour and pattern as the one in the picture.
I also need a rear bottom seat squab.

Hi everyone
Yesterday Dad cut the rest of the old heater box out then started making room for the blue heater box i was given and we reckon it will be fine when it's all welded in and it will add the much needed strength back into the front panel.
I need to make the small panel that you can see missing in this picture next to the heater box.
The heater box looks a right mess in this picture but i spent a bit of time today cleaning it all up and it is solid which is the main thing.
I'm happy with the driver's side and how its come out after i put it in primer today, i re-did the swage line above the rear arch because it was no where near sharp enough for me

I extended my heater box, so I can fit a large heater matrix, and put a 90 degree angle on the heater intake (gives loads more fresh air into the cabin) , and still fit the horn in here
This will save you from blanking the rest of the hole in the front panel!

Hi everyone
I got the driver's side front wheel arch in primer today
Ignore the bits I didn't paint, i will do them when I take the front suspension off
Talking of suspension I am thinking of doing the wishbones and trailing arms in red primer then matte lackering them becuase i think this will give a dort of 60's/70's look, any comments or opininons on that would be good.
We were about to start welding in the heater box but the wire line that the welding wire runs through was knackered which is a pain because it would of been good to get that done

A bit more progress today
I had only stripped a bit of the engine bay and primered it so i did the other half of it today.
This was it before.
I took the coil and the luminition off, I'll probably flog the luminition on eBay unless somebody else wants to make me an offer, its no use to me becuase i don't have the bit that goes in the Dizzy.
This was the engine bay afterwards, there was a lot of underseal on the underside of the parcel shelf so i got all of that off aswell.
I also had a poke around at the rear dampers, found a suitable screwdriver and tried adjusting them and I'm so happy that they still work, Set as soft as they'll go made the rear nice and bouncy with quite a bit of travel and set as stiff as they'll go made it feel like a race car when you press on the rear wing As long as they suit the spring length of Monte's then i will most likely use them on the road

After coming home from Race Retro i had lost all enthusiasm after talking to Peter James himself about insurance, it really made me feel as though what i was doing with this car was completely pointless, My aim is to be able to use the car, not just for it to sit there
But ahh well, we will try and jump that hurdle when we get to it

Right, update time
If i'm honest not enough has happened with the car but that's changing.
It's all about getting rid of old crap paint and flatting the body down and getting it all pretty for the paint this summer, basically the boring part
The roof is now free of black paint, the bonnet has had it's bronze paint taken off and just needs wet sanding smooth, i have sorted out the dents on the passenger side of the bonnet, just needs the last one taking out on the driver's side.
I should have the front end of the car in primer by the end of this week
Now for some pictures of her
I will get some more pictures of the car tomorrow

The Imp looks a bit different now
Still needs the heater box welding, the battery tray cutting and welding in, the "small" problem on the front left arch arch welding up and a little hole on the floor then i'll have a fully solid Imp, Then it's flat it all down and get it sprayed

The Imp looks a bit different now
Still needs the heater box welding, the battery tray cutting and welding in, the "small" problem on the front left arch arch welding up and a little hole on the floor then i'll have a fully solid Imp, Then it's flat it all down and get it sprayed

I won't say anything other than we sprayed the car again because it really wasn't right, this time the paint is very consistent and has a very good finish, it's certainly a very good paintjob for £30, I'll let the pictures say the rest

Hi everyone
I've got both of the doors built up, it's satisfying doing the simple jobs that make a nice difference
I've also started T-cutting some of the car, I've done the front driver's wing and some of the door and it's come up so nice and shiny, just need to do the rest of it the same now

Just the lovely comments make the time and effort worthwhile
Got all the lights on the front now, just need to sort out a set of bumpers and rear lights.
Should have the paintwork at a reasonable standard soon, then we'll take all the suspension off and clean it all up
I'll start a thread in a minute about wheel colour, I'm still not sure what colour to do them

It's the back end's turn for a suspension strip and rebuild, I have already got it up in the air supported by some old wheels and tyres.

Hi everyone
I've got the car rolling again, me and Dad stripped everything off the back end of the car, most of the old underseal is gone from the engine bay and the gearbox tunnel, i have used red oxide primer and then underseal over it and it looks quite smart. I have clipped in the brake line that runs from the front to the back and lightly screwed it into the three way union. The driveshafts are in, the trailing arms and crossmember look quite smart now with their coat of paint but they need touching up where they've been scratched. I have fitted a pair of Montes and my Spax adjustables so it should go round corners quite well
I think it sits nicely now, it will settle once it's got an engine and box in along with an interior and a fuel tank.
The next job is sorting out brakes for it but I'm reluctant to fit my new wheel cylinders for them only to sit in a damp garage and seize up like they normally do, we also need to rebuild my L4 engine but that should only take a couple of days then I'll buy a performance Solex for it to make it go a bit better.

I've nearly got the brakes completely rebuilt on the Imp, I stripped everything apart and sprayed them all up, all I need to do is refit the copper pipes that go to each rear wheel cylinder and sort out some Flexi's for the rear brakes as well. We'll get them bled up next year.
We're picking up an Imp that's been sat in a field for about 8 months but had a good running engine and box when it was on the road so once it's home we'll try and get it running, I wouldn't mind taking the head off and taking all the valves out like I did with the trials Imp engine, I'll lap the valves in again and clean all the ports up.

Dad gave it wash for me while I was at work, a month stuck in a garage doesn't half make it dirty

Hi everyone
Got a few pictures.
This is the rebuilt pedal box.
The seats are all bolted in, I've got some Stiletto seatbelts to go in.
I've also sorted out the front bumper and fitted that, it's made a big difference and looks better with it fitted.
I'm getting some paint for the wheels, I'm bored of the grey primer already, I'll try and get some "off white" if I can

Hi everyone
Haven't updated this in a long while, but the car is up and running, MOT'd and being daily driven since last Friday and I'm loving it.
Already had to sort a front wheel bearing (it's still making noise but it's not loud so I'll leave it for now) and I've also stiffened the rear dampers quite a bit as it was scary to say the least
