hi paul
the bonnet is not to bad
plenty of pin holes so going to fiberglass and fill it
I don't think it warrants cutting the panel apart
going to be use more than stella hopefully
so probably going to get scratched and stonechips anyway

more progress
yesterday and today I managed to bare metal the front end and paint with kurust.
I used the polycarbide wheel and some industrial paint stripper.
the polycarbide wheel is brilliant but noisy on large panels. (vibration etc)
this upset the neighbours last week.hence why I am trying the paint stripper this week.
its a bit messy as well as hazardous,so must be used outside with gloves etc
sand the surface and apply, wait 20=25 mins for it to react then scrape away.sounds easy :!:
theres 4 layers and it does a couple at a time so time consuming etc.
it is recommended by the painter etc. not nitromors.
this morning I made a start on the heater box with the stripper, then after half an hour I had a visitor
Bradford council environment officer
wanted to know why I was running a business from a private house :!: :!: :?:
he had reports of excessive noise and complaints from neighbours that I was working all hours.
I asked him how this was possible seeing as I drive a truck 5 days a week and this was my hobby.
he basicly said that if there was any more complaints he would be back.
he went so out came the poly wheel and the black and recker, ear defenders and mask for me. plenty of noise for the neighbour
who incidently is 4 houses away and has double glazing.
watch this space to see if im locked up
dought it, I know the law about noise etc

Nice work, Chris. :D

It sounds as though you need to find some dirt on your neighbour and serve it up to them on a silver platter. :x Loud music for hours on end? Friends coming and going at all hours? There must be something. Report them for it, no matter how trivial.

A few tips about your problems with neighbours and noise. I know because I've had the same problem for years. Visits from the council, environmental health, planning etc, along with recently regular visits from the police. The last was because I had the audacity to start one of my Clans, fully road legal, at 7.20pm!!. That resulted in an afternoon visit by the local PCSO who wasn't too happy when I refused to limit working in my garage to daytime due to having to work for a living. Also didn't like me pointing out that noise nuisance was a civil matter and that I could see no reason why in my opinion she was wasting her time and the taxpayer's money. Her answer to this was that it could be come a police matter resulting in me being served with an ASBO!

The one thing I've learnt, however, is to keep the Council on your side. Point out politely that you are just pursuing a hobby. We found the council officers to be very open with us and in fact they could see no problem. What they did say, however, is that when they receive a number of complaints from the same person and they have investigated and found no problem then any further complaints, even if they may be justified, tend to be quietly put to one side and ignored.

Despite it being annoying I have restricted any noise to what I consider reasonable hours, i.e. 9.00pm, but I still tend to work in the garage to far later than that. Another thing I do is keep a record of the times when I'm making any noise, even when I start up one of my Clans and go for a drive. If the Council decide to proceed further with a complaint it is usual for them to require the complainant to keep a log of the times of any nuisance and your own records can be very helpful in providing a response. It's even worth letting neighbours know when you will be engaging in noisy work and roughly how long it will take. A visit to apologise when you have been noisy later than normal is always worthwhile as its shows that you are being considerate.

All a bit of nuisance but don't let them get you down and keep on with the good work.

Pete Richards.

p.s. When they come looking for help when their car won't start, as they usually do, just politely decline on the grounds that you don't want to cause a nuisance!

Neighbours! on one side I service their cars every year for them, joined to them I recovered a minibus for them so they are ok with me, across the road are the nebby neighbours who know everything thats happening on the street, which is ok as I know someone is always watching if I'm away!
The other side of me complained about the dogs barking when I used to have them, and complained to the environmental health about it - in between the letter and the visit i set up a video camera and recorded him, with a stick over the back fence, banging it on the window of the back door and getting the dogs to bark, environmental helth had a lovly police man come and watch the video and have a word with him next door and I haven't heard a peep out of them in the 10 years since!
I do worry that he makes his own firework and blank bullets for his country and western weekends in his shed though, but his use of the bench grinder till ten at night just gives me 'ammunition' (a pun :D |) it I ever do make any noise.

Annnnny way - Libby
shes looking good and solid, you should be thankful that the paint is so tough, it looks like it has protected her well, the bonnet and front valence look good without too much crud underneath it all.

Hi Chris, all looking good,is the 4headlight panel still in the frame? If you need any front floor repair sections I have left and right front floor sections cut from well under sealed car are in great cond, they are left over from my Husky rebuild if you can use then I will bring them back from Hartlepool. Keep up the good work, I understand they have a good panel repair shop in Armley Prison.

Did you use Kurust on your other car Chris? Reason I ask is that I used to use it a lot several years ago without problems, but never over a whole car. Then in recent times I`ve found it to have lost it`s qualities of keeping any rust away, where there was actual rust I mean, so I stopped buying it as I seen it as a waste of money.
Also, does etch primer work as it should if there`s a coating or two of Kurust on the steel?

hi kilty
I used hydrate 80 on stella not kurust
a friend did some bits to bare metal and kurusted them 6 months ago and there still ok.
im doing a panel at a time so need something to keep the rust of
then im going to have a go at painting the whole shell with etch primer
the painter that is doing stellas boot says it will be ok so heres hoping
when I finish the car I will have to be gentle on the brakes, don't want the paint sliding off the bonnet under heavy braking
thanks for your concerns

I've had good results with Bilt Hambers De-0x Gel - it has the consistancy of apple sauce and looks like it so will cling to vertical or overhead surfaces.

It's coming along nicely, Chris. :D

Is your car going on a chassis tilter? :?: If so, you could perhaps try attacking the corrosion above the rear window with the car upside down. That way, any water used to rinse the area off ought to leave the shell conveniently, rather than down the C-posts.

If it's not on a tilter, how about using a slightly damp cloth to mop up the De-Ox gel? You could use it to clear up the worst, then rinse it and use it again to clear up more, then again and so on until clean. That would avoid completely soaaking the area in water and you could dry up as you go too.

I'm not sure what effect water has when used to clean inside a shell in this way. It would be good to know because my own shell will need cleaning deep inside at some point too. :!: I have some De-Ox to try as well.

de-ox gel is good stuff but
if I applied it above the rear window how would I clean it off
I think you have to wash the panel down.
would the water cause more damage and where would it go
it is recessed so very awkward to get at
cheers chris
Chris

All the panels get damp in use as condensation forms due to warm air on the inside and cold on the outside so its not going to do any more harm imho.
Get in with air line and hot air gun to dry quickly if worried about it and inject waxoyl when finished the car to prevent any further rust.

Stick something at the ends then most of the water will run out onto the rear shelf and can be mopped up, any that gets down inside the C pillar should run out of the drain holes in the lower rear quarter which is why they are there.

Hi Chris,

You're really getting on well with Libby. She looks a solid car. It looks like you're tackling her the same way as we did with Hilda.

Re:where does the time go

i cant believe its 18 months since i posted a report about libbyI
ive just removed the front wishbones from libby and they are brand new
only very light surface rust.front brakes are all new, shoes cylinders etc
rear wishbones needed derusting before painting with hammerite
the rear brakes are all new.
rear crossmember support has been derusted and hammerited
spring and shocks have been refurbed
steering rack stripped and rebuilt
engine stripped rebuilt twin stromms and sport exhaust getting fitted
and ive been doing loads of silly little bits like steering arms and changing them to fiesta trackrod ends
also been derusting small items using electrolysis.
best bit is no mess, just have to wash and paint item quickly.
i would post a couple of pics but photobucket is slower than ever so maybe later.
happy Christmas everyone and good luck for the new year

I'd be interested to hear more about your use of electrolysis for de-rusting, Chris D. :) At some point, anyway.

gary hope to see you in new year
paul electrolysis (google electrolysis rust removal)there are loads of topics
basicly plasic container with water and soda CRYSTALS not powder
battery charger sheet of metal. suspend the item to be cleaned in the solution and attach the black from the battery charger
place the sheet of metal in the bucket but not touching the item to be cleaned and attach the red from charger.
make sure the item is covered doesn't matter if the black wire is under water.
turn on and watch the bubbles leave the item.go to work and check after tea.item will be black.
gain browny points from the misses by volunteering to wash the tea dishes whilst she watches emerdale
clean the item in the water with a bit of wire wool.clean shinny metal.dry and then paint straight away.
clean sink of soap suds etc.job done
depending on the size of item and battey charger, mine is only 4amps so a steering bar is left overnight
and I kurust each item as soon as ive washed and dryed them.other advantage is it does not affect the rubber bushes only attaks the rust,no dust etc and the water can be emptied on your garden non harmfull.
will sort some pics
cheers for replies
