Re: Noddys natterings , Heated screen washers.
Took the Singer to work today deliberately in the rain to test for leaks , ive done a bit of adjusting on the rear window and even after 5 hours of continual rain and with the car parked reversed up a hill not a single drop came in there or anywhere else .
I also noticed something different with the washers after the heater fitting yesterday.
initially the water comes out as a normal jet because of the distance between the heat exchanger and the jet , as soon as the warm / hot water comes through i get a lather effect because of the heat effecting the screenwash and it covers the screen much more efficiently in a wide white lather .

I reckon it's two to one that you'll damage one fine and pretty Vusky with that. So I wouldn't even go there !

Suits the Vusky Dave. Try some neoprene pads where the feet touch the paintwork.

Re: Noddys natterings , Old roof rack
Rack legs are built and it fits perfectly , just need to spray them the same colour as the rack which is more or less the same colour as the Singer .
At least now ive finally got a rack that fits something should i need one.
Finding a rack that fits the vuskys strange roof has been challenging to say the least. n

Re: Noddys natterings , Old roof rack , now finished
Great additions that you've fitted Dave.
Must find the heated washer kit [like yours] that I've had for ages.Think I had a few other pieces in same box so must fit them too> probably to Stiletto as like to keep low mileage Cally pretty standard
My Stiletto has an Avenger NOS interior mirror now as usefully bigger than Imp one and direct swap on mounting arm
Used to use my old style luggage rack on my Caledonian to carry Gazebo but two of feet located above door area[longer roof on Husky's??] and I had a few paint chips/door closing issues so havent used it for a while
Look out for my badge bar/lamp mounting points welded in already, that I've just bought. Need to get it rechromed then will fit ,between Cally's body/bumper irons [ no drilling needed as held on by std bumper bolts. Planning to use NOS Lucas LR9 or 14 driving lamps]

Re: Noddys natterings , Vusky is clinically obese
Just had the Vusky weighed at the local scrap metal dealers we use at work
Its 830KG with 3/4 of a tank of fuel
No wonder its not a lover of hills , restall rear seat is very heavy which cant help.

Well, if you will go fitting extras like roof racks then what do you expect!
As an aside, wrapping the screenwash tube round the heater hose can help if you haven't got a fancy heating kit. Doesn't weigh as much either

Re: Noddys natterings , External boot lock for the Singer
Today ive mostly been modding ,
On the Vusky because it has a Stiletto front panel the boot lock is under the badge , always thought this to be a much easier system rather than a cable , but could it be done on the Singer .
First off the front badge has to stay exactly where its positioned on the dummy grill and this is the main issue as the boot lock for a Stiletto is higher up , moving the badge up would just look stupid so the lock needs to come down , With my spare Stiletto lock i worked out that the lock button itself could be moved down just by elongating its mounting holes .
The front brace is different meaning the lock case needed altering , also the screw in lock adjuster needed shortening .
I had the rubber packing piece for the front badge assembly as this its 8mm thick and required for use with a Chamois dummy grill.
Cutting the hole in the dummy grill was a right pain in the arse .
Anyway after a fair bit of work the mod is done .
So much easier than the cable in the glovebox effort , lock is the same number as the rest of the car so still only one key.
Well chuffed as it looks more or less like nothings been done

I always thought the press button design much better too, and also much more secure as the bonnet cant be opened should some undesirable get into the car, you should get a discount on your insurance for that Im thinking

Re: Noddys natterings ,External boot lock for the Singer
Just to finish off the lock job ive fitted some new felt seals , not sure if you know they are / were there but the front external lock and much more commonly the rear window lock on Saloons have felt seals fitted to keep the dreaded rain out.
These are soaked in oil , i use gear oil and make them way too fat so they squish up against the bodywork and keep the rain out.
Heres the rear window one ive just changed , this is 6mm thick , boot one is the same only 9mm and i have replaced the temporary foam one seen in the other photo.,
Luckily we have this stuff at work for making felt seals for old motors etc , handy uhh
Old knackered seal on the left.

Rack on will affect your fuel consumption obviously and may create a lot of wind noise over 80mph.

Re: Noddys natterings ,Vusky running on three
Well this is a tad weird .
Vuskys running on three cylinders most of the time , cylinder cuts in and out and its hideous under load ie. hoofing it one.
So far ive done the following for elimination purposes
fitted new.
Cap
Lead on number two
Plug on number two
Swapped leads / plugs about / still number two regardless whats on what.
So Ive ruled out the lead / plug / cap / rotor arm
Compressions seems fine although il do a proper plugs out WOT test tomorrow .
pertronics fitted so no poimts / condensor etc
Any ideas , im knackered and cant think

Re: Noddys natterings ,Vusky running on three
guessing at a burnt valve do a cylinder leak down test because if the burning is only minor it will only highlight the miss at certain conditions during valve overlap

Re: Noddys natterings ,Vusky , Thats all Folks!!!
Well ive had a play and have come up with zilch.
Did a leak down using my mates compressor and its fine , comp is 180psi BTW , changed the plugs again for some Denso ones , changed the coil and the rotor arm , i recon now it could possibly be the pertronics ignition but what with the back i can no longer bend or contort myself over its arse end to faf about any more
Carpal tunnels not helping none either.
Ive some points and condensor here so maybe il try that one day .
However the upshot is ive lost the will to carry on with the thing .
No idea what to do with it now as its plain i cant maintain it as i did when i was younger , nor the Singer for that matter,
Abandoning ship

Re: Noddys natterings ,Vusky, Thats all Folks !!!!
So have I and im not going either, your welcome to come down any time before this Thursday and not Monday afternoon , would be great to see you and ive still got yer nuts
Had another small play , first off i swapped the magnet part of the pertronics from the Singer into the van , no difference whatsoever and still a miss-fire on number two , also tried moving the original one to a different position on the dizzy shaft , still missing on number 2 , if theres 4 magnets in there then that doesnt compute in my head one bit .
So i relented and refitted points and condenser , these being some aged NOS stuff lying about.
Miss-fire seemed to have gone .
Refitted the old coil and still no miss-fire .
Re-fitted old plugs and still no miss-fire
So Im thinking the Pertronics unit has gone tits up , reading endless streams of stuff on the net they do have a fair amount of them fail. Talk of wrong coils , getting too hot etc etc . some swear by them and some at them.
It Needs more driving and im still not 100% that the Pertronics IS the actual problem as I was under the impression they either work or fail totally and not cause a miss-fire especially on one cylinder only which like reading all the waffle on the net has stewed my brain.
My back is now broken as is my will to live

Re: Noddys natterings ,Vusky, Thats all Folks !!!!
When I was on the way to the irish meeting 3 year ago the car developed a misfire on no,2 but on on tickover ,so we kept her lit and do 1,265 miles in the 5 days back home I done the compression test and all was good ,then forward on to may this year and the misfire was still there yet the car was going really well ,but the tickover was getting worse so I pulled the head off to find a bent exhaust valve only very slight but over the 3 years it had worn the guide ,I was like you mate I put it down to the electronic ign that it had a fault when no revs were on it ,you know your self its going to be something stupid ,these little cars do things just to keep us learning and on our toes

Re: Noddys natterings ,Vusky, Thats all Folks !!!!
FWIW, Dave - I had similar with my Ignitor on Pele. It drove me utterly potty trying to find the issue - eventually I swapped it out for proper points and condensor (from the Distributor Doctor - who also said he'd never heard of the Ignitor ever giving trouble). Instantly, the car drove better and the misfire was gone.
Vick still has one on Skye, but personally speaking, I have got to the end of patience with electronic gizmos. So far in the last 12months I've resolved three cars' ills by removing electronic ignition systems - don't get me started about the utter shower of sh one T that is the Accuspark stuff... utter crap.
To all those about to chime in with "mine's been brilliant"... I'm sure it has. Enjoy it. I used to feel the same, but now I'm very happy with NOS points and condensors, thanks.
If I was more local, mate, I'd pop over to give a hand... although between the two of us, we'd be pretty useless - you with your Carpal Tunnel and my slipped disc in my neck has flared up, so we could just stand there tea in hand and point at it not working... a bit like old times, mate!
Hope you get it sorted soon, mate. Keep smiling.

Re: Noddys natterings ,Vusky, Thats all Folks !!!!
Been using the Vusky all day , mainly for floggage of stuff at a car boot sale , So far the miss-fire has failed to reappear so im confident in saying it WAS the Pertronics unit that failed.
The only modern thing on it and it gives up.
Now what does that tell you.
Vusky caused more interest than the stuff we were selling

Yep, shame you won't be there Nod. Guess I'll see you next year, Dave, as won't be at WWW again this time around. Need to save my beans for Going Dutch in May, and a holiday with the other half later on this year. I'll have a pint of "heavy" for you .......... if that helps

Re: Noddys national , A Cornish Caper.
Well there was no point in sitting at home wondering what the national was like so me and Mrs Nods went on a little camping road trip for a few nights in Sunny / thundery Cornwall Thursday and Friday night and coming home today ( Saturday ).
We decided on Bodmin and found a brilliant campsite here.
http://www.ruthernvalley.com/contact_us/contact_us.php
Camp Noddy
Its in the middle of no where really so its very quite which is what we were after.
First afternoon was spent looking for something we saw on the map that seemed to now not be there so eventually we ended up back in Bodmin in a pub called the Hole in the Wall . It was full of drunk but friendly locals one of which bought us both a drink. The Steak and Ale pie made 1/2 hour before was stunning , we even saw the pint of real ale being pulled for said pie. They know how to live down there.
Friday was a trip to Padstow then on to Wadebridge .
Padstow AKA Padstine was heaving to say the least and we had to park up the top and walk down.
Annies foot was not happy by this time so come the end of our time there i left her in Padstow , walking up to the Vusky and drove down to pick her up.
If you want to cause chaos in Padstow drive an Imp thats all il say.
Then on to Wadebridge for some shopping , by this time there was thunder in the air and by the time we returned to the campsite it was hoofing it down with added thunder and lightening .
Annie wasnt too keen on being under loads of trees in a tent at this time
Camp Noddy was dismantled this morning and we went to Fowey , much like Padstow only smaller , prettier and less busy , again we walked down but found a small bus to take us back to the car park.
Then over the on the Bodinnick ferry to Lostwithiel then home via Liskeard , Tavistock, Okehampton and Exeter .
The ferry at Fowey
Stopped off at Route 303 American Diner for lunch and what a meal that is , recommended if your down this way ever.
Total mileage 338
Oil used , no idea I never checked.
Coolant used , see above .
Spanners used , one 5/16 ring spanner to adjust the wing mirror after i whacked it with a suitcase
Vusky started instantly hot or cold or half hot / half cold EVERY TIME
Fuel used , no idea , never checked , just fed it when it wanted some.
Ive got to say it ran perfectly even though it was loaded to the gunnels and its VERY hilly around these parts

I am so jealous - you visited some of my favourite places. Fowey is fabulous, IMHO. But you missed Polperro - quite simply one of the prettiest harbours in the known universe IMHO.

Great photies Noddy.
We'll be in St Ives on Wednesday - in the T4 Campervan though (grown-up kids + other halves in tents)...hope the rain goes North - we need it on the garden up here in Richmond!
I must admit that I prefer Conwall in May-June mind-up only because no school kids - well it's not the kids that get on me goat - it's the parents shouting and screaming at them that pi$$$ me off!

^^^^No whistle at all although we get the odd tapping noise as the aerial hits it over rough or uneven ground .

Re: Noddys National , A Cornish Caper.
How come every time I post stuff the subject changes within one post
Anyway decided to check the Vusky out after its little Cornish caper , I did notice something rather weird whilst it was ticking over as im just glancing over the engine .
The dizzy clamp bolt was jiggling about
A quick investigation revealed the clamp bolt was devoid of thread , I removed the dizzy just by pulling up so i could change said bolt .
How in the name of all that is holy did the dizzy actually stay put given we were pulling 6,500 RPM up many a Cornish hill or indeed how the timing stayed put il never know.

Re: Noddys National , A Cornish Caper, Holy ****
Ive had the same thing happen Dave. Driven for weeks without doing up the clamp as well.
Maybe some sort of vacuum keeps it from bouncing out, as it isnt that tight a fit, usually.

Mrs. IM and I stay at a holiday cottage my parents rent each year near Polperro. It is lovely down there, as are Padstow and especially Fowey. Sounds like a fun trip, Noddy and Mrs. Noddy!
