Post by chris d »

time to unvail the new project
as title says imp deluxe. very low mileage documented 16,600 miles.
been off the road since 1990.
all original panels, not been welded.
engine starts and runs, no rattles or leaks.
very good condition interior. beige.
now the paint.
pinewood metalic and surface rust.
a previous owner sanded what i presume were paint inperfections/rust of every panel down to bare metal.
he also cut a small hole in one cill to patch.(that was left also)
the battery has leaked and rotted the tray inner and outer lower wing
then it was left (why ,i dont know).
the bonnet edge has had a repair but will need sorting.
it changed owners a couple of times then i got it.
i was going to just mot it and use it as a daily through summer but
after talking with dale and peter last night ive decided to do a full bare metal resto.
so here we go again, lots of swearing and late nights, and possibly tears.
have a look at the photos and give me your words of wisdom etc
cheers chris d

Now a name- If it's a boy then it has to be some cricket legend from the first part of the reg (LBW)
If Its a girl then it has to be SIAN ( 514N --- I believe pronounced Shaan- the Wlsh Version of Jane) - Second part of the reg!

A similar story to my Polar White Deluxe, and same year. The paint on mine has fared better but with all original panels and zero rot to worry about. It gets painted end of April.

All the best. Painting makes sense. It won't stay like it is now forever.
As for giving cars names and calling them He or She,

cheers for the comments guys
i live opposite a cricket ground (you can spot my house by the broken windows and missing roof tiles)
liam botham played a few years ago. (beefies son) club went down that year.
will decide on a name later (keep the suggestions coming)
can anybody recommend a good strong paint stripper for metalic paint.
nitromors will not touch it and da sanding is going to take ages and the mess will be horrendous
will sort some update pics soon

try a proper auto paint suppliers for paint strippers (the non eco type that actually work), also give if a scuff over with a 60 grit disc in the DA, it will get the stripper a head start at biting through the paint. i was told you can use newspaper over the paint stripper once applied to stop it drying out so quickly, this allows it longer to react,

the bits i've done seemed to be poor on the first application, but second and third go were much better, you can give it a while and if nothing doing lightly score the paint with a sharp stanley knife.

if all else fails a DA with a 40 or 60grit disc will get paint and filler off in no time

In a DA sander? Christ stripped a fair old bit of my cars paint off at the weekend with an 80 grit in my electric DA and it shifted the many layers of paint in seconds

ok decided not sand or use paint stripper.
the car is going to get the oven treatment,,
just like stella.
so the complete strip down commences,
started with the interior seats/belts trim etc.
so far ive removed 12 bags of sound dedening from the rear inner wings.
the cardboard pieces that go over the rear wheelarches are not covered in fabric but appear to be painted :!: :!: :!:
working all easter so next wednesday weather permitting more progress.

Isn't amazing how they scrimped on paint in the late 70s... there's no top coat under that back seat area at all!

In the pic, Chris, it looks like the panel under the back window has some surface rust (at least) in it. Catch that quick, buddy, as on late cars (and some early ones) that can rot through and its not a very easy fix to do it properly.

the spare with the car is a firestone 12/155 and still has the nobbly bits of rubber on the tread (never been used)
also what is the paint code or name for the standard steel wheels white/cream paint.
kilty the colour is pinewood metalic not lincoln green (i thought it was lincoln until i checked the plate)
tim all the rust will be sorted once it is stripped and sent to the oven.(just like stella)

Hi Chris, the oven route is the best idea, think you would loose the will to live trying to remove all the paint and surface rust with the DA sander.
may call round tomorrow and have a look see. Had the Stiletto down at B & K today for MOT passed OK with no problems.
keep up the good work.

Yes those tyres are correct, mine had those on it when I bought it new in 75
And the rim paint colour would be Foam Grey I guess, always thought it was Polar White but when you see the colours side by side it has a definite grey blueish tint to it, where as Polar is more creamy.

It will be a great shame to scratch the wheel nut seats putting the wheel on.
And just wait until the ATS man clobbers it with his mallet putting the balance weight on.
And the original finish was nothing like that, just a quick wave passing with the spray gun, :D

Keep it up chris - will you take loads of pictures of 'cooking the shell' as I'm really curious,
I know you described it to me, but pics are good, would be interested in the cooked finish and what debris it leaves behind and the pro's and con's in relation to dipping, media blasting etc.
In principle it seems like a really good idea and a very effective alternative to the other types of stripping

update time
after a great national, time to get cracking with libby
she is now a rolling shell.
after talking with the oven chap and fainting at the price (gone up 4 fold).
started to manually sand the bonnet side to see the condition under the paint,
the rust patches are quite deep and there a 4 layers of paint
so making enquiries about soda blasting tomorrow (if they answer the phone)
picture below of bonnet side, took 3 hours with 60 grit sand paper and nitromorse covered with paper.
will loose the will to live if I have to sand the whole car, lets hope the blaster is cheap.

About 2 years ago I was quoted £600 to sodablast a bare Imp shell, but the soda won`t remove that rust, they will have to up the media to aluminium oxide or similar for that. That didn`t include getting it there or back home. I`ve since bought my own kit.

Those soda blasting kits seem hideously slow. There's a video somewhere of them blasting a Jensen and it took ages. I find I'm better off using aluminium silicate, strips quickly, removes rust (soda doesn't 100%) and reusable (soda turns to dust)

Hi Chris, was in Calverley today if I thought you were home I would have called round. Soda blasting would be a waste of time and money, shot blasting is the answer.. Had bubble car shell shot blasted in Hartlepool,a bit aggressive but ok cost £110.00. Don't know if he could handle a Imp shell could ask if you like let me know.

Chris, DO NOT shot blast the bonnet or boot lid, surfaces will distort due to heat generated by the shot,I found this out to my cost when rebuilding the Stiletto, Kenny wasn't impressed having to skim the whole bonnet when respraying.

painter organised
industrial paint stripper found and bought, waiting to collect with the painter.(cant sell to general public).
bought a fibreglass stripping wheel and did the inside of the bonnet.(might as well start with the awkward bits).
treated with kurust because there is rust in the metal (common late imp problem).
ive left the back edge of the bonnet in paint because I tried to remove the bracing to get underneath but you cant get at the spot welds without going all
the way through so a bit of welding to sort the pilot holes.also the front edge has been welded inside so that is to sort.but no progress until next day of (Wednesday)
after ive serviced the jag for its mot.
pictures below, comments good or bad welcome
cheers chris d

Lovely work, Chris. :D :D

I've not heard of a glassfibre stripping wheel. Do they work well? I am guessing so, based on the evidence of your pictures.

Chris, let me know how you want the title to read (on here or via PM) and I'll change the title of the first post for you. I think that should do it.

Thanks for the information on the discs. I'll keep an eye out. :)

Don't press on with them!!! they wear away alot quicker- if you find a balance so they firmly hit the surface they work very well, and last!!
I bought these and were very impressed with them
