No pics but I've replaced some of my Heath Robinson butchered standard hoses for some Heath Robinson butchered silicone ones from Cliveyboy. So hopefully I can drive without worrying about a repeat of the hose fiasco after Going Dutch.

Hopefully taking LNK to the Chiltern Area meet on Thursday as a short test and then Gaydon on Saturday.

Re: BAZZA'S IMP'S (LNK & LYH) - GIMME A BRAKE!

Post by bazzateer »

OK, so it's MoT Test time at the end of the month so last week I gave LNK a quick check over (adjust brakes, grease kingpins etc) and renew the gaffer tape that came off at Gaydon. Anyway, while doing the kingpins I noticed a small hole in the wheelarch just ahead of the sill area. Gave it a poke with the trusty old screwdriver and the hole got bigger. Checked the other side and it's much the same. So, hopefully this weekend he'll get some more band-aids (welding, not gaffer tape) to keep him on the road until I retire and can afford to get him properly sorted.

Yesterday was Chiltern Area Centre night so during the day I took him to the petrol station to fill up. One the way I noticed the brakes were dragging. Back home I removed the off side drum and noticed the bottom spring had come adrift and the shoe was out of alignment. Put it all back together but having noticed one shoe was near the rivets made a mental note to fit some of the spare shoes from the lockup.

So, today I got the box of shoes from the lockup and started to strip down the off side. Put new pair of shoes on and just could not get the drum back on. The adjuster was backed off as far at it could go, handbrake was off, the shoes were seated properly. There's a barely discernible ridge on the drum but not enough to cause an issue (IMHO). I tried various combinations of shoes but eventually had to put the old ones back on.

Any suggestions?

If you mean the rear brakes? have you checked the slave cylinder is free to slide on the backplate? because if it doesnt you wont get the new shoes on??

Are the "location pads" worn on the back plate?

I *could be" that the inner edge of the new shoes has fell into a wear ridge on the backplate which will tip the shoe backwards/inwards and so the outer edge of the friction material presents a bigger diameter for the drum to clear?

Also the hand brake lever may need adjusting off to allow the shoes to re-seat?

Don't forget someone just up the a41 (hemel)who keeps stocks of all these parts, if he can find them. :D

I would check the wheel cylinder? Is it the same in both sides, or is it just one side you cannot get the drum on?

Right, time to go to a classic car show here in Budapest! :o

Peter Hurst wrote:You need to check that the piston in the slave cylinder is retracted right in ie could be seized OR as I found on my Clan the hand brake cables were adjusted too tight and the lever that slots through the shoe was not letting the spring pull the shoes together at the bottom. The piston should be in the slave cylinder and not project past the slot that the body of the cylinder as mine was.
Should be obvious visually if hand brake holding shoe out when handrake off or see if any tension in cable. I took pin connecting cable to lever out and brake shoes sprung back. Had to lengthen cables by over half and inch!
Thats why you must always adjust handbrake cables with rear adjusters locking up brakes and unless cable stretches which i've never found the handbrake should never need adjusting.
Peter
No tension on the handbrake cables and the lever is free to move back and forth. But I'll check the cylinder as suggested.

Here's a thought, the original problem was a dragging brake caused by the bottom spring coming off (new ones on order). Is it possible that the next application of the brakes over-extended the piston and it's now stuck 'out'?

If the piston has in any way been pushed out, there would usually be signs of fluid loss.

No sign of fluid loss but maybe it came out 'so far' and got caught on a wear ridge in the cylinder? Just speculating until the weather clears up enough for me to have a look.

Got the rear brakes sorted this morning. It was the piston on the cylinder that just needed pushing back in. So I started on the fronts...........

Driver's side first, rear shoe off and replaced no problem. Front shoe off no problem. Can I get the new one on? Can I feck! I can't get the two ends to locate. Is there a knack to it?

Haven't tried the passenger side yet.

Try a small adjustable on one lug and lever it back, it should just ease it in. Then a bit more force on the opposite end.

Find a decent size pair of mole grips. Hook the piston end of a shoe against a recesses next to one of the studs on the hub. With the moles, drag the cylinder slot end of the shoe into the slot (should be easy, might not even need the moles). Then - still using the moles, clamped onto the section of shoe next to the lining - lift the piston end of the show off the hub and drop it onto the piston. Then you might have to bend the end of the shoe straight again.

It's a royal pain in the hole.

That's what I was getting at but I've never needed mole grips, just a small adjustable spanner. Hook it all up on the deck, springs and all, offer it up, lever it in, bung the spring pins in and your sorted. Front or back, never fails. 8)

Fronts - what you need is a big off screwdriver. Put the spring on the shoe, put the piston end onto the cylinder and lever the static end into place (you will notice there is a handy ridge that you can use to do this operation in two movements). On goes the retainer clip and bingo... Yes, its a knack but its a 5min job once you've got it... if you were closer, I'd offer to do it for you.

Decided to take LNK off the road for some tittivation prior to the long run up to Perth in August.

First job was to find the cause of the nasty oil leak encountered on the Coventry trip. Turned out to be the timing chain cover was not bolted down properly. I hadn't touched it since buying it so can only put that down to the previous owner  . Another small leak was from the sump which needed a few bolts nipping up (my fault that one! ).

All now seems good with just the merest spot being deposited. :D

Also took out the driver's seat as I'll be fitting a new one for the trip. Decided to lift the carpets and check the floor. Lots of surface rust under the damp soundproofing. Binned that and cleaned it up before a couple of coats of Kurust. Also stripped out some superfluous wiring from the cabin and under the dash. The stereo was dead so that came out along with the CD changer which had 10 CDs stuck in it. Dismantled it to rescue the CDs then binned it. New stereo on order.

Pulled the parcel shelf rubber back and exposed a very wet corner of the soundproofing. Binned it and left rubber off to encourage it to dry.

Jobs still to do = bleed/adjust brakes, fit new seat and wire it in, fit new stereo, fix clock, put rest of interior back in, drive it to Scotland.

Probably going to take a gazebo and small tent to Perth as the trailer-tent is a bit of a pain on long uphill stretches and as it's all uphill to Scotland I don't fancy it! :D

Just remembered, he did take me for a spin in the Maniac Imp couple of years ago after I helped sort his front brakes. :D

Yep, did it Monday morning, all seem OK but I haven't had time to check it properly since. Off to Brum for a meeting tomorrow but off Tuesday so weather allowing I hope to give LNK a good clean and polish ready for National. I'll take him for a run and re-fuel first though so should be able to give the alternator a run.

Finally got back from Perth at 8pm after driving through monsoon after monsoon ending up with 2" of water in both front footwells.

Too tired for details but here are the bullet points:

LNK went really well overall, a new cap and rotor arm seems to have cured a mild misfire and cold starting problem experienced on Thursday morning.
Total of 1150 miles on 25 gals = 46mpg including fast motorway, stationary motorway and every type of driving inbetween. I'm happy with that.

The Bazebo experiment was an abject failure due to the Scottish wind (all that haggis and whisky has to work it's way out somehow I suppose!). Thanks to Big Bad Bob Hawes for helping me erec.....erm, helping me get it up....... ! We were going to throw it away when the wind got it but some good work by our USA rep' Al Petersen, plus lots of the good old gaffer tape, had our little tents sheltering under a half-height Bazebo for the rest of the weekend. So, the Slagroom will be back for WWW and future events.

Good to see everyone again and meet a few new people too.

An absolute pleasure to have Al Petersen from Seattle with me for the weekend. A few years ago I flew to Seattle and was put up in Al and Rahne's home in absolute comfort. Al flew to Edinburgh and I put him in a tiny tent under a failing gazebo where we were either rained on or blown around for a day before the weather decided to behave itself. To cap it all I had to abandon him at Edinburgh Airport at lunchtime today (his flight home is tomorrow) as there were no B&B or hotel rooms available due to the Edinburgh Festival. He was going to sleep in a ditch somewhere but he hit on a novel idea for a cut price 'room' for the night - hopefully that worked out for you Al?

After dropping Al off the drive home was a nightmare. Horrendous traffic and rain for most of the journey (except the Scottish leg!).

Didn't take any pics this time so that's about it except for congrat's to all the prize winners but especially to good friends Rich and Karen for winning best Chamois with UHS - more top work from Clark.

Off to soak in the bath now - Roll on WWW!

How to wire your hazards Baz
Theres 6 wires sticking out of it , Purple , Black , green/white , green / red and two green / brown

1) Connect the black cable to a convenient earth point . You can use the mounting screws for the switch or the screw for the original flasher as I did .

2) Connect the Purple cable to a permanent live supply

3) Connect the Green/White cable from the Hazard Device, to the Green/White cable in the existing R.H flasher circuit.
, I connected mine to the back of the indicator switch

4) Connect Green/Red cable from the device to Green/Red in the existing L.H flasher lamp circuit, in the same manner as (3) above.

5) Disconnect the white wires from terminal 'B' on the normal FL5 flasher unit, and connect it to one of the Green/Brown cables from the hazard unit switch.

6) Connect the other Green/Brown cable to terminal 'B' on the FL5 flasher unit.

Finally, check its all working .

Cheers Dave,

Explained in my favourite language 'simplese' :D I'll probably have a go tomorrow.

Here's a pic from Wednesday of me and LNK arriving at the Classics on the Green event at Croxley Green in Herts.

Re: BAZZA'S IMP'S (LNK & LYH) - No LNK for WWW

Well, had a problem with the rns brake locking up last time out. Also the brake lights have been sticking on. Thought they might be related so first of all I had a look at the rns. Lots of dust and wear on one part of one of the shoes. No obvious cause but possibly the backplate is worn allowing the shoe to move/tilt and jam against the drum?

Anyway, cleaned it all up and refitted then took him for a drive. Pedal is rock hard then there's a 'click' and normal pedal pressure is resumed. Then it goes hard again and the brakes are dragging. All new springs etc and it's all fitted correctly. So, I'm thinking definitely the back plates - comments?

Today I decided to swap out the brake light switch for a spare from Rich Claydon. The old one is pretty secure in its place and I'll only end up twisting the pipes if I try to unscrew it. So, in order to change it I'll need to undo all the pipes from the 3-way connector.

Now, all this wouldn't be a major concern except that building work is due to start on my garage this week which means I have no time nor anywhere to do the necessary work, time being the main issue. Therefore LNK will not be accompanying me to WWW this year  This will be the first WWW where I have not gone in a classic.

This garage has been 4 years in the waiting so I'm going to concentrate on getting it done right so I can get LNK (and the others) in there and sort out his little issues in time for next year. He is now tucked up under a waterproof cover and a tarpaulin away from the building work. Hopefully I can get him out back again in a few weeks.

You can tell you're an imp owner when you have not one, but three spare engines.....

Baz, garage looks really good, is there a.build thread at all?
