Re: Noddys Natterings , Modern stuff is crap
The original horn on the Singer lasted 46 years ,although when it did fail it took the wiring loom with it ,
Anyway thats besides the point , I binned all my spare Lucas ones as a precaution and stuck on a modern one , a year later its failed.
UTTER RUBBISH.

Re: Noddys Natterings , TOTALLY WEIRD
Well this has me well and truely stumped
Went to a garden centre in the Singer this afternoon , apon start up for the return home I noticed the fuel pump warning light wasnt working , figured it to be the bulb so off we went , got home no problem so thought id do a quick bulb change , not the bulb ,
Turns out the fuse had blown for the pump , so my question is this
A, why did it blow and more importantly
B, HOW DID WE DO 7 MILES MOSTLY ON A DUAL CARRAGE WAY AT 70 with no fuel pump
Ive tried to run the thing out of fuel on the drive by shuting the pump off and after 20 minutes it was still running , started to splutter a bit on tickover so i revved it up and it ran fine.
Is it even remotely possible to have a self syphoning feed the engine on its own sans pump fuel system
STUMPED

Re: Noddys Natterings , TOTALLY WEIRD
Seen this before on a G15 at Imp Ecosse when it was in Aberdeen, during the run around the track at Alford Gordon's G15 kept cutting out diagnosed as a dead electric fuel pump but seemed to run OK if full throttle runs avoided. They made it back to Maryculter maybe 20 miles where they replaced the pump with my spare.
It had us scratching our heads as well but reconned partially the gravity effect of a full tank and self syphoning, similar to sucking on the end of a hose to start it flowing as long as the lower end is below the level of the fuel it will continue to flow.

Re: Noddys Natterings , TOTALLY WEIRD
In theory with the needle valve open there is a sucking force on the fuel - the engine vacuum/flow of air through the carb.
I doubt it would be sufficient to start drawing fuel but would encourage it to flow and pushed by gravity at the other.

Re: Noddys Natterings , TOTALLY WEIRD
My clan could do over 2 miles , some of it uphill with just the fuel in the 2 x weber 40 dcoe carbs .. but yes the the head of fuel would just be higher than the carb so the slight pressure would force itself past the one way valves in the pump a good design feature unless you have a leaky float needle valve !
On a similar point i have only had one fan belt break on my imp/clan in nearly 500000 miles when it happened i kept the engine cool with the heater radiator , i have a small electric water pump to help the flow and got back home like that ..
The more simple the better , you only need a pair of pliers , a screwdriver and a roll of tape in the glove box to get a standard Imp going again Ohh and a gallon of water !

Not really done anything today but i did disconnect the fuel pipe from the carbs just to see if it self syphons out in a continual stream which im glad to say it doesnt , loom taped the added brake light wire in and im waiting for some newness brake light to arrive , also got another light in the pipeline , il pick the best one when they are both here .

Going to attempt to fit a high level brake light on the Vusky behind the tailgate glass , getting the wire to it will be a lot of fun

Re: Noddys Natterings , Vusky high level brake light
Well after a mammoth amount of work the high level brake light is finally on the Vusky , wiring was a nightmare but i managed to get it from the rear light to the top of the tailgate hinge without drilling any holes , i did have to drill a few small ones in the tailgate though to run the wire through and mount the light , this is a single bulb (21w ) type from ebay bought for £4
Took me 7 hours in total to wire and mod the light to fit

Re: Noddys Natterings ,Vusky high level brake light done
Heres how it looks inside , the connectors are there so i can keep the wire threaded through the tailgate in place as this was hell to feed through should i need to remove the light or the tailgate , marked up the interior light switch just in case you wondered what the hell its for
I recon i get carried away sometimes ( or should be )

Re: Noddys Natterings ,Vusky high level brake light done
Been out in the Vusky today , all is running well after 3 weeks of idleness ,
One slight technical hitch which i never foresaw was the tale tale light on the high level brake light , it works fine except that sunlight shining on the light makes the tale tale light up exactly as if the brakes are on.
Soon sorted by fitting an angled piece on the inside attached to the tale tale so sunlight doesnt get to the lens but light from the bulb does , works fine now.

Re: Noddys Natterings , Antifreeze tester
Ive just bought on of these , not at this price as it was through work , handy bit of kit , tell you how much antifreeze to add if its weak as well , all you need is the coolant capasity,
Just tested the Vusky and its at 55% so covered for the winter freezes to come , Singer and Beemer next

Re: Noddys Natterings ,Antifreeze strength test .
These only work with glycol type antifreezes so won't work on the new OAT type found in moderns but since we won't be using that in our imps it will be fine.

Re: Noddys Natterings ,Antifreeze strength test .
I brewed some lovely Belgian-style Grand Cru 3 years ago, roughly 8% ABV they were, and left them to mature out in the shed, they had no problem with the -10/-15°C temperatures that winter - and were bl***y lovely too! 3 of them (500ml) and you were on the deck...

Re: Noddys Natterings ,Handed headlights
After tidying up the wiring in the boot yesterday one thing really annoys me and that is the cable entry and therefore my bowl cutout on the passenger headlight .
Because Lucas use the same bowl for both left and right headlights and just change the yoke for left and right , hence the cable comes in on the wrong side,
Heres what I mean
Drivers side which is perfect
Passengers side which is not , the cutout is below because of the cable entry and whilst bulb change is possible its not so easy.
So i got a tatty old passengers headlight assembly and had a play , first off redrill and flair a new cable hole , its flared to hold the cable entry grommet so its nessessary , after much faffing came up with this.
Then cut the new cutout for bulb change easiness , this automatically removes the redundant hole
Tomorrow il take it to work and sandblast and paint it up .When its fitted il put up a piccy

Do you put the bit you've cut out to any use Dave? I was wondering if it's a decent contour for a buckshee repair section, if a wee bit on the thin side!?

when I did the headlamp mod a few years back i just used a large hole saw and you end up with neat edges and easy access and a lot easier to cut.neat trick with the wiring though

Noddy, great work. It's these detail touches that make your cars so compelling.
How do you make such neat, straight cuts in a relatively small piece of metal? Did you use a reciprocating saw of some sort?

Heres the same bowl after blasting and powder coating ,
And here it is fitted , you can see ive fitted some plastic edging on the cut part ,
Before the mod
And after , quite chuffed I am too , cable entry is far neater and bulb changing is down to a few minutes each side

Had to strip and powder coat the drivers side one today as the newness passenger one made it look uber tatty.
Also made a headlight adjusting tool as the little clips pushed on the end of the adjusters no longer stay on or do the job

Re: Noddys Natterings ,bit of a quandry
The screen rubber on the Singer is getting iffy , im not a lover of modern rubber seals and have had a few " issues " with them.
So the quandary is this .
I have a NOS screen rubber here in the loft BUT its for an early van ie. no chrome strip insert , just plain black rubber
What do you recon , im not fitting a modern copy and the Vusky has a van one already so i cant swap them
Over to you guys

Could try asking if anyone wants to swap the van one for NOS with insert.
Otherwise it look you'll have to fit the van one or swallow your pride and fit a new one.

Dave, for what it's worth I've had no issues with Malcolm's 'new' seal I had fitted back in early 2009. In fact the fitter commented on the high quality.

Re: Noddys Natterings , Bit of a quandary
I'm with you Dave... sadly the new screen seal fitted to Skye in 2004 has cracked up and leaks like a sieve. Pel still has her original 1976 seal and its perfect (still supple etc) although the insert filler is now a very odd shade of yellowy-orange (and I get folks asking why I don't change it... refer above).
However, I wouldn't fit a van seal to a Chamois, as that would look a bit... wrong/horrid, IMHO. Its a quandary, alright...

Re: Noddys Natterings , More faffing about
Just for something to do dinnertime at work more than anything else ive been altering the washer bottle bracket I knocked up years ago .
The pump ( which is a BMW one ) was originally just fitted using a jubilee clip and a bit of foam , not up to my usual standard.
So ive fitted some clips to hold the pump and blasted and powder coated it so it looks better
Old way
New way , By the way if you have iffy washers dont forget to fit a one way valve , it stops the screen wash draining back to the bottle and keeps the pipes full right up to the jets

Re: Noddys Natterings , I haz rust hole !!!
Well i decided to remove the windscreen on the Singer this evening , the rubbers given up and the original windscreen has wiper blade scratches on it , its not been out since 1988 when it was done by a garage , took some shifting to get it out i can tell you .
Found a hole in the N/S bottom corner , not that bad but im glad ive caught it
Cut out the grot , unfortunately the outer edge isnt good
Ive made up this repair which i hope to get welded in tomorrow

Re: Noddys Natterings , I Haz rust hole !!!!!!!!!!!
I no longer have a hole , a right pain to do and not very neat but its solid
A bit of seam sealer to finish off
Then the quandry about the screen rubber , the old one was knacked so I was down to using the van rubber or a wait for an original saloon one to turn up ,
So ive fitted the van one , it can always come out again as windscreens are only permanent til they get busted , however I do like the plain look as it matches the side window rubbers , I need to get a piccy of it out the garage and also hose it to check for leaks.
Must be a world first to fit a van rubber in a Chamois so Im at least unique

It looks smart mate. The black bonnet helps as well. I'd leave it for good. Was that a nos one?

Agree.
Noddy, you have an eye for what makes a pleasing and appealing visual effect that properly arouses an emotional response.
It's something that those that may have an eye for *anal detail* (like in show and shine) can completely miss.
It's an art form.

Just given it a through pre winter storage clean , wipped all the wheels off and gave the inner arches a proper clean.
Then came the leakage test on the windscreen , what i wanted was heavy rain , what I got was a dry day , So I figured 1/2 hour direct hose treatment would do
Set this up by jamming the hose nozzle on the shed
Which gave me this , went in for a coffee and left for the 1/2 hour , result is no leakage , Rear window copes with this as well although not if you direct the hose right on the joint for a fair while which is understandable really .
Singers now dried off and in winter hibernation.

That's some fabulous beading on that bonnet of yours, Noddy. You must have a decent layer of wax or sealant on there.
