Re: Noddys Natterings , Transom panel , part 2

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

Took the panel into work today and hit it with the sandblaster , I used the hand one as the biggy would blast it to dust , within 30 minuits its clean and paint and rust free , then into the welding bay to fill the old Hillman badge holes.
Back home a skim of filler over 2 small dents and over the where i welded up the holes , I then drilled new holes for the Singer badge , then out with the spray gun for a generous coat of primer .
Here it is now

All finished and fitted , Needs to be polished up when the paints hardened off a bit .
Also poured a pint of wax oil in it before fitting , warmed it up til its like water , poured it in and sloshed it about , i blocked off the holes with grommets but completely forgot the reflector screw holes , cue 4 gooey lines
I suspect your sick to the back teeth of photos of the Singer so heres a few more

Re: Noddys Natterings , A bit higher

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

After lowering the Singer a while back ive noticed it has settled a tiny bit too low , The look i want is for it to be low but not too low and more importantly sit dead level , Negative camber has increased and its a tiny bit nose down since its settled .
Ive been thinking for a while of the best way to solve this especially as ive not got adjustable platform shocks and would rather stick with factory spec ones anyway .
I decided a spacer on the bottom would be best but it had to be done properly ie.
it had to locate in the spring to stop any side to side movement
It had to locate in the bottom spring cup tight
It had to be strong enough
And finally the right height
Anyway a bloke up the road was changing the front shocks on his BMW and as usual came over to borrow some tools , i popped over later with these and noticed the top cups on his old shocks looked like they might fit with a bit of modding.

Heres the result , im well chuffed :D :D :D , ride height has gone up 6mm at the shocker so im expecting more at the wheel , time will tell if it sits level as its a tad high ATM , Il give it a week or so then have another look
If anyone can see any safety issue with this mod please say , ive got check straps fitted so theres no change of the collets dropping out if i happen to do a Dukes of Hazard impersonation

His top cup fitted exactly in the Imp spring , a slight tap and its interfierence fit , perfect in fact :D

Image

Machined down to the 6mm thickness I think i needed they fitted exactly in the bottom spring mount on the shocker

Image

And a close up , ive covered the thing in copper grease to prevent electrolytic corrosion

B & B on site would probably mean me and the old woman could go next year too.

Nice find, Dave. It looks good and does the job perfectly. A part number would be handy though, so it can be stored away for future reference :)

How are the stays ? I've sent a set to one of our number in the USA this week. Looking forward to feedback from there in time. I may start doing pre-finished ones in crackle black ...... what do you reckon ? The recent ones I've acquired have been in a variety of body-colour finishes :- Green, cream/buff, blue as well as the near standard silver-grey.

Been out in the Singer today , feels a lot better , probably as the negative camber is less ,It feels glued to the road , handling is very precise and all in all a great first run , just need to see what ride height it eventually settles at.

Re: Noddys Natterings , tailgate lock

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

Not done much for a while , i changed a top hinge pin on the NS door of the Vusky and have just spent a few hours sorting out the tailgate lock , not the handle but the lock itself which was very worn , especially the brass catch part which had a huge groove worn into it , managed to get it apart and braze up the catch and refit the threaded rivits , again by brazing and fill it full of grease .
Il fit it tomorrow .
End of boring report

Re: Noddys Natterings , Winter clean up.

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

As we actually had a dry day today ive given the Singer a " proper " clean ie. everywhere :o .
Mainly the inside of the boot , paintwork was minging so a T Cut and a bit of touching up and its looking much better

Shiny
Image

Oh and just in case anyone want to know where my fuel pump is heres a piccy , its an SU electronic one mounted with a coil bracket , pipe doesnt go through the floor as normal but turns towards the pump at right angles , by turning the fuel tap to off and disconnecting the rubber pipe i can remove the fuel tank easy even if its full , handy for OMG Hydralic fail
Still need to finish off the paint cleaning by the pump though

Liking the fuel pump mod Noddy. Makes a lot of sense.
TBH I would consider a cover over the exposed parts of the pump.
I have seen these SU pumps for sale more than once broken at the plastic unions.
If your luck is like mine at some point I would drop a spanner and it would land exactly there.

Noddy, You seem to have cut a section out of your headlight bowl.....in order to change the bulb without dismantling the headlights?, yes? great idea, I have sealed beam light in at the moment but I can feel a conversion and modification coming on.....Allan

Works very well , the bare edge is covered using the chrome part from a spare door pocket.
You need to keep the spring mounting for the headlight so can only hack out so much . On the passengers side you need to cut the other side of the bowl out , cutting the same side as the drivers one on the passengers one makes it still difficult to get the bulb out.
Because of the spring mount and wire inlet hole this make the passenger side cutout face slightly down but its very easy to change both bulbs now.
A picture sort of showing the passenger side headlamp bowl cut-out
Ive done the same on the twin headlight set up on the Vusky , as theres no spring on these you can hack most of the back straight off
Image

And a close up of the drivers side showing the spring etc , extra black earth wire going up to the screw is for the built in sidelights as mine are no longer in the indicator units , side light is fed off the plain red wire with the bulb holder down near the spring , This is required as the springs earth is a bit hit and miss when it comes to electricery flow

Thanks but hardly the work of a genius  , I also moved the earthing points from the top of the inner wings as thats just a stupid idea and makes the wire longer than needs be
and moved them to the chassis legs
Like this

Thanks Noddy. Looking forward to seeing it fitted.Image
I have the solid state type on my car at the moment. Can't hear it above the engine while running but I don't like it rattling away at starting.
Reading HERE I see you opted for the electronic type rather than the one with points.
From the picture it looks like a new complete unit you went for.
I am leaning toward a conversion kit myself http://www.sucarb.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=33152 I have a few of the old things here given to me by my Dad (Austin A30 bits for decades)
Did you have that option when you got yours?
Was it a treat myself job or was there any other reason behind it?

Kit was available but I went for a complete new pump as my old one was years old and its best when diaphams are getting on a bit , You get no noisy clicking as they only pump when the float drops , I cant hear mine at all.

Heres the finished cover , Welded together now and pop rivets removed as these were just to get everything right , then powder coated to finish.
Imp sport and anyone else for that matter
Is there anything else you think needs doing

And here it is fitted , ive just used short self tappers ATM but this might change , all in all a pain to get it exactly as i wanted it but looks OK to me

Nice work. is the top hole for inspection? Otherwise confused as to why its there?
TBH I would prefer to do stainless steel above mildly corrosive and stove enamel coated for things like that now.
But not trying to put down the effort in any way

I was wondering if it might be rear scuttle, just under the window, with the hole for the lock. Either that, or heater box, but the hole looks too small.

Took the Singer to work and noticed the drivers door wasnt shutting as well as normal
After much checking it appeared the top hinge had loads of play in it so i took the door off for a look see , on removing the top hinge pin i noticed its a tad bent which on closer inspection was cracked as well , new pin fitted and all is well again , did this on the Vusky a while back , Singers come out in sympathy i recon

New pin on the left for comparison

Nice crack which went half way through

Re: Noddys Natterings , All new door panels

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

Singers door panels have been a burgundy colour for many years , not original as i got them from a MK3 Sport , problem is they are starting to look a tad grubby so ive made some new ones with some 3mm hardboard and a huge sheet of red vinyl i originally got for the Vusky seats but didnt use it as it wasnt flexible enough

The panels i had fitted , being MK3 they didnt fit the door too well and had the pattern moulded in which MK1 Chammys didnt have , you can see this panel is a bit wrinkly , its the vinyl not the board .

Image

New ones ive made in a much brighter red more like the original , i plan one day to do the bonnet foam grey again and redo the side stripe in red so this will work well .

Is there no end to this man's talents? :o

I'm after black door cards in that hardboard-like material (without the vinyl covering). Fancy making me a pair, and also the rear interior panels that used the same stuff? Happy to part with beer tokens ;)
I was going to make my own, but fell at the first hurdle when I discovered that I'm apparently completely clueless when it comes to using a jigsaw. Luckily that was before I'd found the right sort of material, so at least I didn't waste any of that, but even so..

Interesting to hear that you used 3mm hardboard. When I did my interior panels I couldn't find any thing that thin so ended up using some ply which was just a bit too thick. On mk1s the interior panel on the door fits in to a channel at the top and if the panel is too thick it won't sit in there properly, also the surounds for the window winder get pretty tight if the panel is too thick, it looks ok if you don't look to closely - but I'm going to redo them properly one day. Dosen't matter so much with the rear long thin panels though.

Like your choice of colour too, red vinvy looks cool !

cheers

Hi Alastair,
Even 3mm is slighly pushing it , On The front panels Ive added thin foam padding which also doesnt help, I didnt put any on the rear ones .
It does fit in the top channel but its a bit tight .
I think the original board is a bit thinner than 3mm , probably an imperial thickness, also the vinyl ive used is cloth backed and at least a mm thick itself .
3mm board using thinner vinyl more like the original would work better.
I recon i used 200 plus staples doing these panels and a fair wadge of glue as well

yes did that and it helps but still not quite right. As mentioned the vinvly is quite thick as well - I wondered about opening up the chanel abit but thought that might look a bit of a mess.
will have to see what the thinest hardbaord is that you can get.

Hi Noddy interesting how many extra interior goodies you get in a chammy compared to my base model imp. What do those cubby hole covers consist of ? Did you make them? What steering wheel have you got there?
I have a few 13inch steering wheels one of which is a leather mountney but have resorted to the standard as the 13 was just too small. I'm looking to get a 15" mountney at some point.

You can get mill board in the correct thickness for the door cards. There are limited supplies of the old 2.5mm board bit there is also 2.3mm which works well with new vinyl that can be a bit thicker.

AlastairC wrote:Hi Noddy interesting how many extra interior goodies you get in a chammy compared to my base model imp. What do those cubby hole covers consist of ? Did you make them? What steering wheel have you got there?
I have a few 13inch steering wheels one of which is a leather mountney but have resorted to the standard as the 13 was just too small. I'm looking to get a 15" mountney at some point.
cheers

Hi Alistair ,
Cubby hole covers are made by a company called Cosmic , they are made of aluminium and quite rare although a few people on here have a pair , ive got a pair on the Vusky as well
Steering wheel is made by Formula London and is a period one , its 14 inch and seems perfect to me , I tend to try something on one car and if it works well try and get the same on the other
Heres the one in the Vusky which still has the original centre.

This is the Singers which was missing the centre so I machines a block of Ally up and fitted the Chammy badge into it , really pleased with the red line around the badge i fitted as it goes with the door panels

Just been knocking this up , the original on the right has been repaired quite a few times and was looking tatty so ive made this out of Stainless steel mesh and a bit of odd stainless sheet , its not finished yet , undecided wether to weld it and remove the bolts or leave it as it is , still need to drill the other mount hole and finalise position .

Here it is trial fitted ,

Very nice , Dave, very nice. I'm beginning to think that you either have too much free time, or need to get out more

By the way, how many batteries do the door cards take ?
