Alloy fuel tank for Imp

Post by anderson121 » Fri Feb 24, 2012 12:42 pm

Hi,

Does anyone have an alloy tank for sale with fuel sender that uses original fixings, or a Supplier of new ones?

I am told these are better than mounted on a stand as fitting to the original mountings keeps the front stiff.

Many thanks

If you PM Actuarius Impetus he may still have the details of the guys who made one for an old Imp he had. It was very good and retained the standard mounts.

I'm not at the stage of fitting a fuel tank to The Pest yet but I do have intentions of fitting an alloy one just like that.
So I will also be interested if there needs to be a bulk buy.

If you haven't been successful, try Ron at Impspeed - he has just done a race tank for me and can do alloy tanks to use the original fittings.

I made an initial enquiry and had the following reply...........

Hi
Thanks for your enquiry

Yes we can still make these tanks
However we are very busy at the moment
You are looking at 3 weeks turnaround.
We are in the middle of moving workshop at the moment
I can come back to you with a price
Cost is approx £200
Would you need a fuels sender unit ?
What fittings would you like ? Push on or screw type?
Many thanks
Jim

price sounds fair, i wonder whether there is a chance of a group discount if there was enough people interested?

as far as the tank goes i think id prefer threaded fittings myself as ive never been keen on using jubilee clips also as im planning to run fuel injection id be interested to know whether the sump area at the bottom is baffled at all? i assuing this is where the outlet is?

I may be wrong now, but I think the original fuel tank to some extent is a structural component.
If so - is the alloy tank designed and built with this in mind?

Lars - I don't think it would be considered structural - on the race cars, we take the original tank out and don't add any replacement strength.

What's the benefit/point on a road car? Surely the weight lose is minimal not to make any notice. I can understand on race cars where its the combined weight lose of all the factors and competing against other cars to give you the edge, but on the road you are not racing anyone or making enough difference to gain mpg significantly. Or I'd it to gain a higher capacity tank for road use?

in my case im simply after a baffled tank for use with a high pressure efi fuel pump the cost is offset buy not having to faf with surgetanks and 2 pumps etc also it guarantees that there is no crap in the tank :D and that there never will be :D

For the record, I'd prefer a foam-filled tank with a baffled sump for fuel injection. I see from the photo that the tank appears to incorporate such a thing, though. Also I do not need it to have screw-in fittings. Unless I am mistaken, they jack the price of fuel system plumbing up a lot. :(

If the tanks all need to be identical to get the low price, I'll have to decide whether or not to proceed. But for now, I am still very much interested.

From reading through this thread , I think some of you guys have got the wrong end of the stick when it comes to the fittings of the tank. Wasn't the original suggestion for the screw in or push in fittings talking about the Fuel SENDER unit - not the inlet or outlets?

I read it as the fuel pipes and not the sender. Then again, it was nearly 3 years ago when they discussed it............
