Re: Noddys Natterings ,Fusebox epilogue
Everythings now done wiring wise on both cars , on the original Lucas wiring everything is fed from one brown 44/030 wire , this goes from the solenoid ( or B of the regulator if you still have a dynamo ) up to the ignition switch which in turn does everything . Original 44/030 wire is only rated at 27.5A which fed by a dynamo with sealed beam headlights and a mono radio is fine.
When you start adding things like halogen headlights , CD players , electric fuel / water pumps and the like theres a strong possibility this wire is pushed to its limi tor even overloaded .
Ive taken every permanant live from this wire and moved it to a specific individually fed fuse box , original wire is now only running terminal 4 and whats run off of it
Heres a generic diagram of whats done , im not posting up a proper diagram for fear someone will get the wiring wrong , torch stuff and blame me
Original on the left , new wiring on the right
Note , on MK1 positive earth cars the 44/030 wire is not used ,instead these are fitted with two 28/020 wires ( rated at 17.5A each ) one to ignition and one to the horn , even more scary
This has been a natterings production based on the work of Joseph Lucas esq , all rights reserved , follow this at your own risk[

all looking good Dave and i am not one to pick fault but i feel i must point out the live battery terminal and its proximity to the body work is it just the picture and there is a sufficient gap? i would feel guilty if the next post was went over speed bump and battery welded itself to shell and blew up.

Thanks for the concern , Even negative comments are good , at least it proves others read this rubbishmoose wrote:all looking good Dave and i am not one to pick fault but i feel i must point out the live battery terminal and its proximity to the body work is it just the picture and there is a sufficient gap? i would feel guilty if the next post was went over speed bump and battery welded itself to shell and blew up.

Its an illusion caused by my crap piccy taking , theres a 20mm gap between the live terminal on the battery and the bodywork and about 14mm between the bolt head and the bodywork, battery is clamped in , having seen the damage a short can do especially here so its not something i overlook
Just to put your mind at rest moose ( looks like the battery needs a clean up as its complete with a bit of zip tie )
I do think the original wiring loom to be somewhat lacking when adding other stuff to it

When using a 97/0.30 wire with a 7 sq.mm area what terminals do you use?
I assume it is 6.3 mm terminals at the fusebox?

Re: Noddys Natterings ,Fusebox epilogue
I remember a time when smoking was considered a fashonable and social habit.
I noticed a few smokers return from their "fix" to a club I was at the other day.
I felt a little sorry for them for the first time in my life. They were drenched and miserable.
Yet they went back for more 20 mins later.

Re: Noddys Natterings ,Headlight earth
Managed to get my grubbys on some new genuine earthing connectors , I always thought it strange that the black earth wire went from said headlight to the top of the wheelarch so ive moved them to right beside the headlight , easy to get at with no need to remove the boot cardboard and very short earth leads.
Works a treat .
Crappy red crimp earth lead at the bottom has also been moved to a better location and done the same way , cant believe I used one of those , must have been desperate , BTW these are extra earth leads for the sidelight / indicator units as the screws that fit the lights are generally rubbish at earthing ,

Re: Noddys Natterings ,Headlight earthing
Did the Singers new earthing today , obviously couldnt do it like the Vuskys or id be drilling holes through the front panel , did it off the chassis legs instead
They are
Headlight
Sidelight / indicator extra earth
Fuel pump
N/S Front fog
Other side is done the same but obviously no fuel pump connection and O/S fog

Re: Noddys Natterings , newness locks
Been out in the cold changing lock barrels , bit of a story this
Vusky had 4 keys in total , one for the drivers door and tailgate , one for the ignition , one for the boot and one for the gear lever lock , no key for the glovebox ( or so I thought )
Singer had 5 keys , drivers door , ignition , engine lid locks , rear window and gear lever , again no glovebox key .
Bought a full set of barrels from Robin , door handle , ignition , glovebox and rear window all on the same key , these were going to be for the Singer but I discovered that the Vuskys tailgate and drivers door were the same number as the new set ,
So I fitted the new ignition and glove box barrels to the Vusky meaning this was down to 3 keys , one doing the tailgate , ignition , glovebox and drivers door , The other 2 being the gearlever lock and boot lock keys
So on to the Singer , I fitted the new door and rear window barrels to the Singer , and with this being the same key as the Vusky things were getting easier , then came the discovery that the Ignition key on the Singer was the same number as the old glove box lock from the Vusky so fitted this into the Singer .
Singers now down to 4 keys which is a bit better , one for the door and rear window , one for the iignition and glove box and one each for the gear lever lock and engine lid locks
Ive got the wrong button / barrel for the rear window as there are two different lenghts , Robin is sorting this so it will do for now as the button is too long really ( or the barrel too short
Result being that the drivers door lock for both cars is the same , i can now lock both glove boxes and im freezing
One other thing , be carefull if you are dismantling Chamois or early Sport glove box locks , then tend to explode in a fit of springs and other bits resulting in much grovelling on the kitchen floor

Re: Noddys Natterings , locks and barrels
I think LNK's boot lock key is the same as the door, glove-box and hatch......but I'll have to check.
Edit: Yep, just 2 keys for all LNK's standard locks.

Re: Noddys Natterings , locks and barrels
Hi Dave,
It is possible to get a bonnet lock push button barrel that matches all the other barrels.
Would you like me to send you an ignition and glovebox barrel for the Singer?
Cheers
Robin

Re: Noddys Natterings , locks and barrels
Managed to get the bonnet lock on the Vusky to work on the same key as the others by swapping tumblers about with other old locks ive got lying about ,
So the Vusky is now all on one key except for the gear lever lock
Happy bunny

Re: Noddys Natterings , leaky brake reservoir
Well the vuskys brake reservoir decided to leak , one outlet pipe developed a pin hole somehow , maybe stress from the pipes or my struggling to change the flexi link pipes a year ago , the bracket i had fitted was made of alloy and I kind of mullered it removing the bottle.
I cobbled this thing together with bits of junk , fitted another bottle , bled the system and it lives again .

Stainless steel steering cowl is a cool mod Noddy. Have you considered polishing it within an inch of its existance.

Re: Noddys Natterings , Prince of darkness strikes again
Bit of an electrical issue on the Singer again
This time I lost the volt gauge and CD player although the car ran fine , no blown fuses but it would seem that terminal 4 in the ignition switch wasnt connecting properly , to be fair its the original one dated 10-64 so its had its day , ive fitted my last NOS one dated 3-65 and stuff seems to work again , this might have been a struggle to find except that ive just re-wired it after the fire so the connections were still fresh in my mind .
Thank you Lucas
Just to prove it to myself ive taken the switch to bits for a look see , Its deffo worn out
The terminal with the spring pointing to it is / was terminal 4 , the most worn terminal ( top one in picture ) on the contact ring is / was the corresponding contact , terminal to the right is terminal 3 , the start one , you can see just how worn the bakalite is around these and how worn number 4 is , this is after id cleaned the grease and crud off them .
Gone on then , and in the bin

New N/S quater light glass now fitted , these early cars with the cloth covered one piece glass runner off the quater light chrome are a right pain in the arse to do , ive done a fair few now and it gets no easier , much easier to do the later rubber channeled ones where you can split the lower glass runner from the quater light chrome upright

Re: Noddys Natterings ,Letting off steam
Me I hasten to add not the Imps
Sometimes , not very often but sometimes Imps become a chore and not enjoyable in the slightest , As usual its at the most inappropriate time and all at once ,Its the Singer this time throwing rattles about the place with a whole string of little issues that just pile one on top the other , I wont go into details as its boring but just say right at this present moment in time I wouldnt care if I never saw the thing again.
All this faffing about has really miffed my back which now bl***y hurts and just compounds the issue
That is all
AND BREATHE

Re: Noddys Natterings , Letting off steam
To borrow a horrible phrase from popular psychology, do you want to talk about it? As in them? As in the issues?
If you elaborate on them a little bit, perhaps you will feel better. In any event, I am certain that you would miss the Singer very quickly if you were suddenly without her.
I am listening... Waiting...

Re: Noddys Natterings , Letting off steam
I concur! Mischievous Child sums them up for me. Mine is being just that today. Well the electrics are at least.

Re: Noddys Natterings , MOT time again , PASSED
Singer sailed through the MOT today with no advisories
We stuck it on the emmisions tester just for a look see ,
C/O on ticker is 5% which drops to 1.3% at 1000 to 200RPM
So a bit weak really , that said it pulls like a train and revs like a its possessed
AFR at 1000 to 2000rpm is therefore 14.01 to 14.04 , passed the lambda test at 0.998 at 2000rpm
L e C will probably tell me its all wrong now

Re: Noddys Natterings , MOT time again , PASSED + emmisions
Knew it would pass Dave. If it had failed to save you a box of matches I'd have given you a crisp fiver for it.
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Re: Noddys Natterings , Cosmic window prop modded
As some of you know I have one of these beasties and with the warmer weather on its way I thought id use it today.
Heres where the problems start , to fit it you need to fit it between the lock and the rubber seal , this is a pain as often I have to peel the seal away from the frame to get it in
Fits like this normally
Not having all this faffing about so Ive hinged it and fitted it to the lock cover , opening is an inch smaller than before but its still more than enough , cosmic stay remains undamaged and its a reversable mod , it folds down out the way when not in use.
The New Linwood Lane version .

Re: Noddys Natterings , Cosmic window prop modded
I like your modifying style sir. I lost my one years ago while driving through Inverkip in Scotland If anyone comes across it could they bung it in a jiffy bag and send it to `Fat Imp-Driving Scottish Bloke In Bristol`? I doubt there are many who fit the description here!

Re: Noddys Natterings , Ive Lost the plot
Ive told myself so many times before
But this time I think I mean it for sure
I have reached a full stop
Nothings gonna save me from the big drop
Reached a natural conclusion
Outlived the illusion
I hate being in this situation
That call for Hillman Imp relations
If I only knew the answer
Or i had something to fix
Then I would stop this
I would stop this thing from spreading like a cancer
What can I say
Ive nothing to fix anymore
What can I say
I not going to the Car door
I cant stand this Imping abstinence
Leave in silence
Enough already , The Singers all but sorted
To the tune of Depeche Mode , Leave in silence

You've been here before, Dave...let's hope the feeling of satisfaction lasts a little longer this time

Re: Noddys Natterings , Ive lost the plot
Time for a new project as im bored already ,
Singer will be for sale very shortly after ive been to see this car and its good enough to buy , All this is assuming of course its any good and I can get roughly the same money for the Singer so its affordable .
Stand by for gasps of horror but im going to look at this today , its not that far for me and it will be a nice day out in the sun
Car seems genuine and its tax free of course but a tad salty on price , still my haggling skills are still present if my sanity is not
I need to try out the competition and really see what all the fuss / scene tax prices are all about .
Annies keen and the plan is to convert it to an Auto so she can drive it , something i cant do easily with an Imp

april fools day

Anyway, if you wanted an auto box then M**i boxes have been mated to Imp engines in the past.

Re: Noddys Natterings , Spring cleaning
With nothing mechanical to fix im down to cleaning , removed all the seats from the Singer today and gave them all a proper clean , its gobsmacking how filthy they were with a fair few white cloths returning black from cleaning duties , gave the paintwork inside a t cut and polish , this too was minging , followed by a proper hoovering which is easier with no seats fitted and cleaned all the door panels .
Also sprayed the seat frames satin black as these were looking a bit shabby and re-fitted the metal cover for the throttle cable .
All in all the Singers looking the best its ever done and running the best its ever done
So to sum up
Finished ( until the next job )

Re: Noddys Natterings , Spring cleaning
Vusky had a spring clean yesterday ready for the show next weekend and summer outings
Restall back seat was so minging its actually changed colour and looks much better , hasnt been that clean since I got the Vusky in 91 .
Everything has been either cleaned , polished or hoovered except the engine which i usually just leave , might clean it before next weekend though .
Even the Beemers had a hoover out

Re: Noddys Natterings , BEY , The evolution
Well this year ive had my Singer Chamois 24 years , though these years lots has changed , changed again and evolved as my knowledge increased , parts became available and my taste changed
Heres some previously unseen piccys of some of these changes
Early 1988 , banded steelies on the rear painted in steel coloured paint
Spring 1988 on Canford heath , note rusty rear vent over the window
Said window rotten and leaking so sealed it up
Haynes tour 1990 , not much had progressed at this point , note front wing stuffed in , done by the first owner hitting their own gate post , ex Mrs in the passenger seat BTW , note odd wheels , I was poor and only bought 2 alloys at a time
Engine lid vented as best I could given no money , Revolution wheels now fitted

Re: Noddys Natterings , Spring cleaning
Finally a sport engine lid , used the same alloy hills digits from the long number plate and made a square one which suits the sport lid better
J O G Scotland 1995 , US spec bumper on but rear window still sealed up
No idea where or when but I still had black hair EDIT , Possibly 1994
As she is now
The current ass end , rear window now opens again

Re: Noddys Natterings , BEY , the evolution , pic heavy
These seats were in my old Stiletto , a pair of Huntmasters
And recovered by me to look like this and match the rears
Eventually removed for some standard Chammy sport ones , the others are in my loft and probably wont get refitted , not sure what to do with them now

Ryton was '87, we used the Stoke plant in '88 but the campsite was across the road from Ryton with IIRC the social club open. Happy carefree days and no knowlege of paint thinners on my part
