Race harness life span
Can anyone remind me what the life span of a NEW seatbelt harness is ? My set are out of date after only four races !!! think the were dated for four years but when I plan on going to the nec autosport show for replacement don't want to find a bargain that's only got a few years left on them !
Ps the old like new old set up for grabs to .... Any offers?

5 years I think. Blue book not to hand...All the items I've purchased from various sources came dated the same month that I bought them.
Do me a deal? Employ me for 3 days and pay me for what I'm currently being paid for 5, then I'll have time to do everything!

Re: Race harness life span
Absolute con it is!
We've had various different life spans, 3 years, 2 years, 6 years etc (all brand new from Demon-Tweeks) but yes, quite right i think it's around about 5 years on average.

Re: Race harness life span
I heard a story where someone turned up to race with an out-of-date harness, was allowed to compete but when he came in at the end the scruts cut the webbing Poor old chap couldn't flog it to a track day warrior!

You need to check the regs for your events. The 'lifeing' of seats and belts is an F.I.A. requirement which applies to events of international status and not neccessarily to MSA sanctioned events of National status. I don't think there is any reg in the blue book which gives authority for a scrutineer to trash your belts if they are out of date.

As a competition licence holder everything you need to know is in your MSA Blue book
Page 156 covers Seats, Seat Belts and Headrests and here's a link to it...

Edit: You'll need to copy & paste it into your browser as the code is too long

Re: Race harness life span
Just ploughed through all the regs and its only advisory until I found the last bit, hidden away that quotes period of exclusion which cuts off at 1961 race only see below.
More bad news is the FIA must have bought shares in seat belt manufacturing and they only issue belts with a 4 year life now, as i need to buy some more and have just found out more expense.
2.1.1. Three point. One diagonal shoulder strap and
one lap strap, with three anchorage points on the
chassis/body shell or roll over bar of the vehicle on
either side and to the rear of the driver’s seat.
2.1.2. Four point. Two shoulder straps and one lap
strap, with four anchorage points on the chassis/body
shell or roll over bar of the vehicle. One either side of
the driver and two to the rear of the driver’s seat.
2.1.3. Six point. Two shoulder straps, one lap strap and
two straps between the legs, with six anchorage points
on the chassis/body shell or roll over bar of the vehicle.
One either side of the driver, two to the rear of the
driver’s seat (or one symmetrical for the two shoulder
straps) and two between the legs.
2.1.4. Where safety harnesses are mandatory it is
recommended that those described in 2.1.2. and 2.1.3.
are homologated by the FIA and carry their label.
19.14.2. Be fitted with currently FIA Homologated safety
harness to be worn at all times by the driver during
training, practice and competition unless the vehicle
was constructed in Periods A to E.
Period Defined Vehicles (Non-Rally).
A – (Veteran) Cars built before 1 Jan 1905.
Dec 1918.
C – (Vintage) Cars built between 1 Jan 1919 and 31
Dec 1930.
D – (Post Vintage Thoroughbred) Cars built between
1 Jan 1931 and 31 Dec 1946.
E – Cars built between 1 Jan 1947 and 31 Dec 1961
(up to 31 Dec 1960 for single seater and two seater
racing cars).
Cheers
