Dave, Johnathan isnt a frequent visitor to the forum and it may be a little while until he visits again, he's a great guy (lives not far from me) and i'm sure that if he can help, he will.

Hi Dave,

I have just spoken to my dad, he never marked any of his heads.

Why don't you post some pictures of the head for him to have a look at, I personally wouldnt risk loosing it in the post.

Hi Jonathan.

That's exactly what Martyn said, about the marking or rather lack of. Of course if having no marks = bevan head then I must have loads of em' in the shed :lol: . Therefore i'm assuming there would be some other tell tale signs. Not a problem post wise as we have a fedex account via work so doesn't cost much to send stuff insured to a high value and signed for but regardless of this it's probably a bit premature. I fully appreciate that it's pretty unlikely to be Bevan. As you suggested i'll post some pics first, although it might take me a while to excavate it from the deepest darkest corner of the shed. Noddy can vouch for the state of it. No mean feat I can assure you. :D

I can't see a pressure relief valve on top of the removable cartridge in a canister type oil filter block! Does it have one (or indeed oil cooler connections)? :?


What type of fasteners hold down the cam cover...they look like unc bolts...? 10mm hex heads for clearance or are they allen heads?
...because for sure, 7/16 AF nuts/bolts don't have enough clearance in the cast type cam covers (GE/Bevan etc) I use long hex bar nuts which are pretty heavy...yours looks like a better solution. 8)

(Improvise, adapt, overcome to a new extreme :D )

I see a normal pressure relief valve fitted, not obvious but no bolt hanging out of it like the adjustable jobbies.

you can use 1/4"unc cap head screws for the cam cover, though obviously long term the threads wear more with frequent removal or you could have your solid hex bar jobbies drilled down the length to shed the weight (as i've done) just visable in this piccy here

Hi

I have to say that you are all very observant, the engine was actually built with an original cam cover with standard studs and nuts.

As you have already guessed we can’t get a socket or spanner on the nuts.

I am going to put an old socket in a lathe and see if we can reduce the size to keep the nuts. If not I will get some K Nuts which have a reduced socket size (I think !!!!).

With regards to the oil filter………yes it has the pick up points for the oil lines and the pressure relief valve is not adjustable (Yet).

I am waiting for a roller release bearing for the clutch and clutch fork which has stopped me starting to put everything together. Even if the engine never runs it will look the part.

K-nuts and the 12-point aero nuts are typically are only 1/8" bigger on the wrenching size than the basic thread size, so 5/16" socket, which should fit no problem.

They are also great for the manifold flange where access is tight.

I have used K-nuts on the manifold studs before, IIRC they reduce the socket size to 10mm which means an unmodified socket usually suffices.
Do me a deal? Employ me for 3 days and pay me for what I'm currently being paid for 5, then I'll have time to do everything!

sorted, we put the socket in a lathe and it worked a treat.............

i have now painted the socket red as i could be in trouble if i loose it.

I think the k nuts will be the best option.

I dont know if you have seen Classic Car Buyer, but we are a weekly paper dedicated to classics and as I have recently got hold of an Imp, I have spent some time on this fantastic forum! We ran an interview in this week's paper with Bill McGovern at the NEC motor show, (Issue 50) and I would love to catch up with yourself (and dad) regarding the build on this car...

It's a fantastic tribute to George and also would make a stunning article (family ties, building up historic car etc...)

Mclaren F1 visits Bevan Garage......

Hi All

Just a quick update........

We now have an engine/gearbox in the car........

My Cousin visited me today, he works for the McLaren F1 team and looks after the design work for the front end of the car.

After taking a look he declared he was impressed, based on this comment I am now declaring that the car has officially been backed by McLaren Mercedes.

Hi All,

Just thought I would give you a quick update on the car, as you can see the engine is now in and to my amazement started first time.

We have entered the car on Sunday 29th at Motorsport at the Palace which should be a nice day out if anyone wants to come along. We are booked on the 30th for a Display stand at Brands Hatch.

We are now waiting for our new slick tyres and a couple of minor items.

The last thing will be placing my Grandfathers name on the side of the car !!

Well done on getting the engine in and starting first time, that's good work!
I wouldn't mind having your cousins job, sounds very nice, my brother is currently working with ferrari f1 so is going out to maranello in a few weeks, lucky git!

Is it just me or is the engine mounted on spacers? Also that is the cleanest engine i have ever seen!! Absolute thing of beauty :D

29th May? I'd love to come along! :D I went to the very last sprint event held there before they shut up shop in about 2000 or so. It would be great to get along to another event.

Engine spec is fairly normal...............998cc, Peter Bevan Head, fully lightened and balanced, R23 cam, AP F3 Clutch etc........Whilst this is the engine we have built the car up on. It will in the long term become the spare engine.

My dad is looking into a new engine should we race the car.

Crikey, it's been a few years since I last saw that photo! Wasn't that hanging in his lounge? And was that the one that held the lap record at Brands for many years? I was lucky enough to see him at work in his shed. We took round some new valves and the 998 block he built and he just felt the valves, got a magnet out and tossed them aside and pulled out some others from a drawer.

As for the car your building, simply amazing. Is that engine painted silver or blasted/dipped?
