Re: Spaceframe Imps
A couple more pictures of the mason imp currently under restoration
If all goes to plan it should be out next season competing in the semsec championship
The owner is making a stunning job of the rebuild, it should be very competitive.

Re: Spaceframe Imps
Davrian imps handle as good as a spaceframe i think you will find its all down to driver style and Maurice likes to have the car set up soft so it digs in and lifts the front wheel as high as in the picture above ,all imps will tend to get a wheel of the ground like the 1 of leo going around the outside of the evo ,this is down to the short springs and the suspension being strapped up to stop the shock dropping and the spring becoming loose

Re: Spaceframe Imps
Hi all, great thread! Good idea John! I'll have a root around and see what I can dig out. I actually have some great pictures of the old <1350cc Irish GT class, which Col's father Dan dominated in the late 80s and early 90s, despite the presence of numerous Davrians, 1380 Minis and semi spaceframe Midgets! I'd like to think I am having similar battles with similar cars these days but the ban on slicks means that even with track improvements, I can't get anywhere near the times Dan used to so around Mondello 20 years ago! Mind you, I'm lucky I have the tyres to blame cos I wouldn't fancy my chances in a straight fight with Mr Rooney Senior anyway!!!

Re: Spaceframe Imps
Yeah, as ever, Col is spot on. I haven't really started changing the chassis set up on mine (the white one in the gallery) as we were chasing a misfire and a soft brake pedal most of the season, but I do intend to play with it a little this year. It tends towards a little understeer on turn in but if I throw it in it is fine, then it is a matter of timing. As soon as I feel the back beginning to let go (before the apex) I stand on the power and it just squatts and goes, that is where it gains most time on other cars. If I am slow in getting the power on, it will need an armful of opposite lock to sort it and is easily held, but this slows the corner exit. You can see most of this on the above youtube clip, especially on the last corner when the back can brake away just after turn in. (Ignore lap one, that's one of my many boo-boos!!)speeddemon wrote:Whilst we have some people here who have actually raced , whats the throw on the davrian shaped imp. Earling Jensen's spaceframe 998 stiletto , multi outright championship winning car in the castle combe special GT championship in the 1990s looked after by Ray Payne . Its best time was 1:06 in practice ( 1:07 in the races ) on the old circuit , thats averaging 100 mph .., The most successful space frame Imp of the later years having won the same championship outright in Brian cuttings hands on more than one occasion It was a giant Killer

Re: Spaceframe Imps
Keith your quite right, theres alot of interest here and as colin as pointed out theres a new site called 'the hundreds and thousands society' which you can join for nothing.
However if we are gonna rebuild or build new cars and are gonna have any chance of racing we need some BODY PANELS. Keith if you have the 2 sets and wanna get people on the road no point them sitting there idol get them up and running at a good price and lets get cracking . Maybe your the key to it.
Carnt wait to hear from you and see your collection
ps still no pics of that CHIMP

Re: Spaceframe Imps
If people are building them or want to build them, this is one of the things we must look at. Like i said its no good something sitting there and wanting heavy money and nobody buys it. Its not what i would call making sense. theres also the way we are all living at the moment. REcession! which as effected everyone.
However if we can get the panels at a great price im sure we could get more cars out there running. Whilst we are getting a lot of interest on this thread let us have the best prices so we can get on with it.
Im an honest guy and if for some reason i cannot get the panels at sensible money Id be pretty upset and would probably go buy something else.
As you said you have a man who has done the work for you, maybe it would be worth a look around for a new contact as fibreglassing is on the downturn that you could find cheaper.
the reason i say this as i know a few companies that make bodies for hotrods in kevlar and there under a grand and the cars are bigger cars.
Dont think im being funny about your price as i know you love imps and im sure you will come up trumps with a good package . let us know asap.

ok get the car ready and we can look at it then but if i get three car shells we can work alot better faster and it saves me boxing it,transporting to different locations,i wont go away from the guy i currently use ive known him allmy life keith

Re: Spaceframe Imps
keith, dont think that would work as you carnt build a car without the silhouette ? I dont understand the case of saying do 3 body shells cos if theres interest and there at the right money you want to be thinking 10 minimum. But people aint gonna get involved unless the price is right. There is a lot of love for them and theres a lot of shit out there waiting to be completed, but i can tell you the main thing holding the job back is the body shells and the price, thats what people have said to me previously.

Hi,
The answer to who bought the yellow Jedi Stiletto on piston heads is George Gunn up in the north of Scotland, He Raced Imps in the 80s at Ingliston and Knockhill, and he has decided that he is coming out to play again.

I think were all getting a bit excited about all these cars that were out there but most are in bits or have been taken apart and sold or scrapped ,but i have seen this all before on another forum loads of intrest in special saloons racing but it always falls flat ,i do hope that the best way forward is the hundread thousand series and for it to work people need to join up and be prepared to take there cars to a photo shoot for a magazine article if and when gerry richards get the knod , until then keep the pictures coming and building them cars and i will be busy playing with my imp at lydden and anglesey and hope to do mondello as well this season
