Two Imps (one double driven), two Clans (one double driven), two Davrians - getting back to like it was in the good old days. Thanks for all of you spectators for turning up also, nice chatting to you all - my most enjoyable day of the season so far!

Keith and I are already making our plans for next season. Provisional dates are already out on the HSA website http://www.hillclimbandsprint.co.uk/calendar.htm

See you all next year if not before.

Hiya Stepponit. My profile:

old- no, overweight- no, balding- yes : the exact opposite of your description - should make for an interesting contest next year.

It'd be great if as many Imps as possible could at least enter for the two HSA MIRA rounds. Centrally located, cheaper to enter as you get reductions for being a HSA member, fast, exciting, and a dedicated class N for Imps as the HSA dictate classes. What more could we want?

I'm also planning to do Llandow (great camping facilities and a superb fast, long circuit) and Gurston (never been but heard it's exciting) next year, as well as my usual local events at Loton and Curborough.

Keith is on board, sounds like you are Andy, hopefully Impmaniac, up for it Stumacher? We even got Ben Boult back in a saloon at Curborough thanks to Keith lending him his car.

Just had to post this to get that reply count up to 100 - it's been on 99 for so long I started to feel like a nervous cricketer!

Any updates on your plans for 2006, class N contenders?

Gerry,

Happy new year!

I am going to begin making enquiries this very week about events, MSA licenses, etc. I hope to get my car back soon(ish?). I have booked up for the proposed track day up at Knockhill this July - can't wait! Anyhow, I might be looking right here for advice about how to get an entry into events in the near future. This has been covered before but some aspects of our chosen sport still confuse me a little, sometimes. If I have any problems, I know you guys will straighten them out! :D

My main focus will be the Aldon/HSA events, I think, although the odd round of other championships wouldn't go amiss, I guess, especially if they are local. I am constrained a little by finances but am determined to try at least a few events this season.

2006 events

Post by Gerry Richards »

OK, so where are we all with our cars for this year??

Mine is still in the garage, not a jot of work done over the winter, exactly the same spec as last year, except I'm going to get the Webers rebuilt at Solomon and Mayson if I can afford it - fed up of the car doing 20 mpg and ticking over at 2500 rpm when it's hot on the way home from events!!

First event I'm entering will be Loton on May 21st (coincides with the new Shropshire camping event), hopefully do 3 or 4 more events throughout the year as per 2005.

Have to keep things to a minimum due to IMPending arrival of kiddie number 2 in July. I have a deal with my wife that if the baby is born by 21st July I can take the sprint car to the National and leave the rest of them at home! Here's hoping it's not overdue!!

What stage are you others all at?

My Clan will be out on the circuits again this year. Have registered for the 750MC Roadsports and the first race will be at Brands Hatch on 1st April. Not sure if I will do all of the rounds but also hope to do at least a couple of races on the Continent again. Also a possibility of entering for Mr Palmers race meeting at Brands on the 19th of this month.

Have removed all of the lightweight suspension components and four wheel discs over the winter and converted back to original suspension with Viva front discs and rear drums. Lightweight units, discs etc being fitted to new lightweight replacement. Dry sump engine as used last year and some of the previous season. New engine being built for new car.

Existing car currently in the garage and having new harnesses and fire extinguisher fitted to comply with latest regs. Whilst doing this have decided to fit rear cage in accordance with MSA regs in respect of Sports cars upto 2000cc. 750MC scrutineers have no problem with integral cage but just trying to keep everyone happy!

Have made some progress with daughter's race/road Clan and have completed build of engine and fitted it along with lowered 3rd and top transaxle.

Still yet to get my Chamois back from being painted. Everything on the car is brand new, including the engine, so I don't propose to enter it for anything any time soon. Maybe towards the end of the season, finances and car permitting.

I have already entered the Imp '06 track day at Knockhill, though. :D Should be great!

Gerry
I'll be out in the HSA hillclimb & sprint championship this year in a
Clan. I've bought Ian Ingrams white race Luff Lightweight shell &
converting it to hillclimb spec to compete against the Till's red car.
The oily bits from my Rawlson Imp will be fitted to the shell now that
the Imp is in need of repair (was rolled last year). Still got plenty to do, only got the shell 3 weeks ago. I've managed to modify the seat mountings & floor plan to get me in it , being 6'3" doesn't help especially with a skid lid on. I've stripped out all the wiring, lights etc (car will be non-roadgoing) & i've got to fit the big arches on & i'm fitting an 'irish' front end on, because i can & i prefer them.
6 weeks to the first event means i've got to get on with it.

Eric

3 clans now, new luff lightweight, original 'well abused' blue Crusader & posh rebuilt bright green Irish.

First event of the year has happened - Mira 22nd April.
Nice dry day with 3 practice runs & 2 timed runs, no major incidents & was run very smoothly & professionally (as usual).
No runners in Class N unfortunately. :(
3 runners in class O (roadgoing imp specials), With Paul Richardson taking the honours in his Red 1040 Clan, Mark Ibbottson in second with his White 1040 Davrian mk5 & third was Micheal Tindale in his Yellow 875 Clan.
Class P (imp engined non-roadgoing) was a Clan only event with Andrew Till in his Red 1120 Clan beating Eric Morrey (me :) ) in my White 998 Clan with Norman Till second driving the red clan into third place.
On a personal note I was finishing the car off late into friday evening & very happy to actually be there competing. 10 weeks to convert a roadgoing race clan into non roadgoing hillclimb car using all the mechanics out of the rolled imp certainly was pushing it tight but it was worth it with me ending up with a time similar to the times i did with the Imp on my first go in the car. In fact the first time i drove it was to the start line for my first run
Unfortunately i wont be at the next few events so my next go is at Curborough on the 11th of June. I was going to do Mira on the 21st May but the entries closed on monday

Cheers

Hi Eric and all,

Love the feeling when the new season finally gets underway.

My entry is in for Loton on 21st May, and Curborough 12th June. Class N contenders so far are myself, steponit and Stuart Cairney, see

http://www.hillclimbandsprint.co.uk/competitors.asp for details.

Could do with one or two more people signing up, although my own seaosn wil be limited to probably 3 or 4 events due to kid due on 15th July.

Si
It would be great to see you at some events :D

The distance thing is a problem. The HSA series is supposed to be countrywide but it does favour the south west. The majority of the events are in the Midlands & down the south west side of the country. The furthest north this year is a new one at Cadwell, & i think most 'northeners' would be upset at me calling that 'oop north'. Unfortunately being in any of the corners of the country always means you will have to travel a bit further than me in the midlands (not that woking is that far in the corner). There are only a limited amount of venues and to be honest i've never been to one in the south east. One thing i do like about the HSA series is the variety of venues, a lot of area championships natrually concentrate on the local ones but you then miss out on the challenge of different venues. The only other registered competitors in my class this year are the Tills & they are from Bristol & Cornwall. This year they are doing some local rounds & selected HSA events so i will probably only compete against them a few times. I don't blame them, i did Wiscombe a few times (400 mile round trip) & i wouldn't want to do that journey every time (especially with my Scimitars mpg).
I don't really know a solution unless you enter local events but then you will miss out on competing with other impey things.
You can tell i'm bored at work

Cheers

Despite the forecasts the Wiscombe Park HSA round remained dry last weekend. Slick organisation by Woolbridge Motor Club ensured that the event ran smoothly and there was even time for an extra 'fun run' at the end of the afternoon with competitors contributing a pound each towards the local church fund for the chance of an extra practice run. If you havn't been there check out http://www.g.pickett.btinternet.co.uk/Movie.wmv for in-car video which is good but doesn't convey just how steep it is in places. Great fun and I was pleased to improve on my time from last September's (non-HSA) visit.
The Werrington venue the previous weekend was similar in some respects but featured a cattle grid lined with temporary steel plates and instead of the twisty bit through the woods there is a nadgery bit through a courtyard where there are plenty of large solid objects waiting to leap out in front of you. The finish line was for me accelerating hard in third at 75mph whereas at Wiscombe the finish is flat in first! Again slick organisation by Plymouth Motor Club ensured a smooth event although one of the last runners in a quick single seater had an 'off' at the esses after the courtyard (I think) where the driver sustained an arm injury.
Good fun and worth another visit. Although it's a long journey, travelling each way in the middle of a bank holiday weekend when most others have got to where they are going resulted in fairly light traffic.
Next weekend it's Shelsley Walsh then follows a few weeks of turning the jungle back into a garden and earning a few more pass-outs/brownie points.....

Hooray, another class-N-er on the forum.

Welcome to the thread Stuart - a HSA class rival, and we've never even met each other!!

Just rebuilding my brakes ahead of Loton on 21st May. There are three or four Imps in the frame for class N this year, but the perennial problem of trying to make it same events when we all live so far apart.

Hi Stuart. May I add my welcome too! I also hope to compete in class N in my 930cc Chamois, probably later in the season, funds permitting (and depending on whether I ever get my car back from being re-shelled or not!! )

I liked your articles in Impressions, Gerry. Interesting stuff.

Well hopefully we'll meet up sooner or later. Interesting to note that there were 4 Imps at Prescott last weekend
Ian and Nigel Moss both with 1200 Imps, Richard Bourne and David Oakes with their 998s (Stiletto and Chamois repectively).

If you have some particular events in mind I would be inclined to contact the organising club and ask them to send you the regs rather than wait to see if they arrive. I've had most of the regs for this year's events and the majority of entry lists are already open so best not to delay I would suggest. When do you reckon you'll have the motor installed?

I've got an entry, only Imp again so merged with the Clans and Davrians.

If I make it that is - bedding new rear shoes in last night and the Janspeed broke clean in two where it goes two into one, and the silencer scraped down the road. Hoping that a bloke at work can gas weld it for me or I may have to pull out...

Just occurred to me that it costs more to spectate at the British GP than compete at Curborough  Not only that, if the bloke in front of you spoils your run by 'losing control' of his car at 10mph, almost hitting the barrier before stalling, at Curborough they would show the red flags and let you go round again for another go
Pity I wont be doing either as brownie points still in the red, so good luck to all concerned...

Curborough is over & and all survived incident free. They amalgamated all the imp powered cars into one class so seeing as i was the only one on slicks & registered for class 'p' it would have been embarassing not to win the class - but you do get a great steering wheel trophy from the Owen Motor club. I did a first this weekend & set my best time on the first practice run & then got worse - overdriving it to try & beat my friends in their Turbo Mini, and failed miserably.
Very well run meeting (if bl**dy hot) with a third timed run if you wanted.
photo's from the meeting can be seen at
http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk/curb_1106/index.html

showing Gerry Richards Imp. Graham Cashmores yellow Davrian, Mark Ibbotsons white Davrian & my white Clan. Not shown but also competeing was Micheal Tindale in his yellow Clan.

Prescott 24th & 25th June
This weekend the HSA series is going to play at Prescott nr Cheltenham.
This is an apsolutely superb venue with a very impressive entry list. The only players for the HSA this time are Stuart Cairney in his imp, Andrew Till & Me in our Clans & Andy & Penny Coughlan in their Vixen Imp (single seater). We basically join the 'Big Boys' as a guest class for National 'B' licence holders. Also on the entry is a Ginetta G15, a Singer Chamois, 2 1200cc Imps & a Sunbeam Stilletto. There is appox 150 entries with 3 practice runs on the Sat & 2 timed runs on the Sunday. The big boys will be there as well with their very quick single seaters (4 litre judd v8's etc).
If you like motorsport in a beautiful 'country park' setting where you can get right to the cars this is the place to and spectate.

Cheers

Since the Davrian is together and provided nothing bad happens between now and the end of the year, I'm hopefully going to do some HSA rounds next year, at least the MIRAs as I think it's a great venue and hopefully a Loton. I'm not a great fan of hills, or of curborough so not sure about how many others I'll try.

I did the Bristol MC / BPMC sprint at Colerne on Mayday bank holiday and was 3rd of 8 in mod saloons and sports under 1400, beaten by Andrew Till and Peter Crewes (Britax Cooper S), was pleased with that as it was the first time out for almost four years. Couldn't do our Llandow event on the Whit bank holiday as I was clerk of the course  . Was supposed to be beaten by them both again at our Combe on 1st of July but a little "oil on the floor and not in the sump" problem the afternoon before put paid that :(.

Planning to be out again this year at Colerne again on the August bank holiday, then at Wiscombe first weekend in September as our club is part of the organisation that runs it and I can give the organising team a laugh watching me (I've been course controller the last umpteen years so I just know I'm going to be the one on the recieving end of all the spoof paddock PA announcements this year :P ).

Really need to sort out the understeer that has appeared since I put the LSD in and went from 22" to 20" slicks at the rear, it's alarming the car turning in worse on slicks than my road car (not an Imp) does

Understeer after fitting LSD is usual. You need to change you driving style for corners - be more brutal! Only problem is that going back to without an LSD and using the same technique results in a big off!

Cheers Gerry. Took me an age to get round to registering, but now I am here I'll try to contribute a bit.

As for clerking, if I can do it, anyone can!

Any of you going to Barkston Heath on the 13th? I will be there, not competing but as course controller, so if you see a suspicious looking character nosing around the back of your cars in the lunch break, it's probably me!

Mark
I was considering doing it as it looks a very interesting course, but unfortunately i've got a wedding to go to that weekend. Also it's not that far for me either being one of the rare 'north of birmingham' events.
I hope it all goes well & must be great being the first Course Controller at Barkston Heath.

Cheers

More the willingness of people to do jobs like this that should be admired really - enjoy Barkston, I had the regs e-mailed from Paul Richardson and was sorely tempted but can't really justify the time with family commitments and potential new projects on the horizon. Good luck with the event.
