Andy jones has been onto me and confirmed i got the figures wrong no surprise was very tired, the 8K figures are from a previous run on the dyno before he made alterations.

I kept my guessing about the 8000 rpm figures to myself.
Do you want to make the correct ones public? (If you have them recorded.)

The engine is 1040cc, right Mike? :?: That is an excellent power figure for such a tractable engine as that seems to be. Your car will fly! :D :D

good test run on the road yesterday all is good car pulls very strong from 3K much more torque than the R17, so in a nice position here sumpguard and horror flaps to fit wash and polish and still a week away fro mthe last event of the championship.

the Gates Northern championship i cannot win due to entering late and missing a the first events (was not a plan to do a championship this year) the North of England historic championship i just need to beat a couple of drivers both capable of top 5 places but we will have to see on the day.

Cheers keith, straight back to work monday and tuesday, about wednesday but then off to Spain for the WRC to try and set something up for before rally GB cannot say what yet and if it happens may not be able to post about it on here! you and Andy will be invited though. will have to take you out in the car before it gets stripped for the winter rebuild but will have to squeeze it in because i am busy, after Spain i am doing media driver on rally of the tests then off to GB then media driving again for Le Jog in December. Now i need to think about what rallies to do next year Andy Jones wants me to go and do the Jersey rally and a friend who works for HERO wants to tackle some big events with me in the car, i wil lgo back and try to win the Spadeadam rally again, might do the odd tarmac event but will not be botherign wit hthe forests as per plan when building the car.

we won the north of england historic rally championship not a big thing and we had no intention of doing ant championship this year but consistent finishes meant we scored points well, this championship did not include the Spadeadam blue streak rally that we won outright beating all the modern targa cars as well.

that is all in the air at the moment the car was stripped back to a rolling shell today ready for bodyshop tidy up and some wiring mods due to new fan arrangement, i would like to do a couple of NESCRO events because i enjoy them and they will be good for a shakedown and i need to go back to spadeadam to defend my win! the saltire keeps the pressure on to get the car ready asap and i like the berwick and i must do the Doonhamer as the guys who run it have been asking me to do the event since i first competed on it as a co-driver and won it. i have looked at various events and have a few in my sights but timing and costs come into it NESCRO events are approx £100 entry for 10- 18 special tests and approx 100 road miles so very cheap compared to other forms of rallying but do i go for bigger events and up the cost and do less ? i wont be venturing into the forests due to all the changes to the rules and regs making them expensive drives through ruts at the back of the field so at the moment not sure, i have now a got a part time job as a media driver for HERO www.heroevents.eu getting the camera crew to the right place at the right time, just done the rally of the tests and off to do Le jog in december they put on some cracking events but they are big endurance with big entry fees but incredible events to do add this to working for century autosport running subaru WRC cars etc i am very busy not to mention the imp parts i am about to produce (managed to get 6 plus orders for some trick bits together without people moaning on price) so ned to make that happen.

thanks for the comments.

Not sure what i am going to be doing this year i think it may be a year of shows rather than competing in a championship. Imp is in bodyshop having a tidy up we have re-built the loom to incorporate the mods i did to the cooling fan arrangement as the prototype worked so well it is now being installed. the front rad has had a re-furb, a thorough clean and inspection and it will be good to go again, the Andy Jones of Shrigley engineering upgrade to the engine is going to have to wait.

ignition system used on FFG is expensive but ultra reliable and producing good power, i never even reset the points gasp all season!

MSD 8222 epoxy filled coil mounted inside car and vertical (although this type of coil can be mounted any which way up) it is inside the car to keep it cool as due to the way a coil works they generate heat the hotter a coil gets the less well it performs so i thought why have it in the engine bay to be pre-warmed? i had tried many lucas sports coils but found these were giving an intermittent missfire this was detected by the tacho needle not giving a steady reading at idle and the engine sounding like it had a slight miss at idle, and when going flat out sometimes we could rev to 9K sometimes only to 7K with a feeling of a rev limiter being applied. So the lucas went and the MSD was fitted idle smoother tacho needle steady and rev to what ever you want 10 K plus coils don't like heat and vibration and require a good quality cooling oil and high copper content windings to work properly back in the day when lucas parts were made to british quality the sports coils was a good improvement over what the factory fitted but now i really wouldn't bother with them.

Distributor is a 43D with a baseplate adapter to take cooper S points (32 oz spring allowing 10 K rpm) this is because the cooper s points were only ever manufactured to fit the 23/25 D dizzy (i.e. early imp) the 43d is the vacuum less later type dizzy with a screw in base plate. The advance curve was set by Andy jones of Shrigley engineering when the engine was on his dyno having his special cam dialled in. I have fitted a high quality bolt on side exit cap (side exit so the plug leads run straight and shortest route to the plugs also looks neat), it is bolted on to stop the cap from oscillating at high revs and altering the timing plus it stops the rotor arm contacting the inside of the cap. The rotor arm is a british made high quality item that has the correct amount of insulation material in it (the expensive part of a rotor arm) this copes with the increased spark from the high output coil.

condensor is a capacitor (as they all are) that i have researched and found an epoxy filled capacitor of the correct rating, epoxy filled as the rubbish you can buy now have internals contain ing thin alluminium sheets around an insulating paper all of cheap quality and the NOS ones i have cut open the paper like insulation material is so old it is crumbling. Capacitors don't like heat (they can generate enough of their own) they don't like vibration especially old and poor quality ones so for belt and braces approach i mount mine on short wire tails and fit them at the coil end of the circuit away fro mthe heat and vibration of the engine.

the plug leads are bespoke made for me by a company that supplies formula one and BTTC teams they are a very good quality item.

Spark plugs are NGK iridium as i think ordinary NGK plugs are not made in japan any more to the correct quality but their iridium and race range are. I tried Denso but had three failures one on Geoff taylors engine at test circuit and two on mine during road testing (maybe i was unlucky)

the cost of all this is quite high but given the cost of entering a rally and all that entails i would happily pay for reliability any day

but roughly

side exit cap £15
plug leads £70
Plugs £48
Coil £70
Condensor £35
rotor arm £6
Points £15
base plate adapter £45

Not there yet with any costs, lots of testing to be done after i have identified the parts and bought them, it will probably be like most of the things i have developed for the rally car. Most people will say it is too expensive and high performance for their road car but the first rule of motorsport developed parts is reliability. Worse case is i have an expensive pump for my rally car that is more efficient and will last if on the back of that i create something that is viable cost wise for every imp i will let everyone know.

Great set of pics showing various mods.

One question "Next are the two types of donut available beware the round tube type!"

I always thought that the round tubes were the original Lotus style that was then changed to the twin plate insert type.

Is "beware of the round tube", due to the age that these donuts would now be or something else?

The only ones i have had fail on competition cars are the round tube type. The failure mode is the rubber falling apart. The type with the plates have only let go due to being cut because driveshafts not radiused, standard bolts failing, high tensile allen bolts bending the driveshaft on the legs around the mounting holes so it gets shaken to bits.

Oh I understand what you mean now.

Must be showing how long I'd been using the comp donuts.

As I remember the original ones I started using in the mid-80's that I bought from Hartwell's, as having the solid tubes with the interleaf plates and then they changed them a few years later to the split section type with the interleaf plates that you refer to.

Never used ones without the plates on a tuned engine as your picture shows how good(not) they can be.

I always used to radius of the drive shafts from my first Imp, as my dad had worked the main Rootes dealer and that was something they used to do whenever a car came in for replacement donuts.
