Re: FFG 549 D restoration
sorted now thanks i got the good one out of the loft to discover a small split that i am 99.9% sure wasn't there when i wrapped it in bubble wrap and put it away. so i have the very rough mock up section and one i do not mind hacking up now. enjoy your hols get plenty of rest, so you are ready for Ulster.

Re: FFG 549 D restoration
last 4 items on the list and then we are off to the paint shop first week in sept just got to do rally ulster and WRC germany inbetween. parts re-furb is coming along nicely so with a bit of luck it should just be a bolt together kit when the car is back from paint as every item on the car is now mounted using a captive nut or stud and has been triall fitted and then removed and re-furbed. Dashboards require a bit of work before being sent away for flocking. nearly time to get the transaxle converted to a dog box and i need to press on with the engine.

Re: FFG 549 D restoration
Banbury flocking services did the dash, highly reccomended http://www.banburyflockingservices.com/ shell dipping and zinc phosphate protection and corrocoat anti rust primer applied by powder coat machine all carried out by ribble technology http://www.paint-strip.co.uk/ top team that have done a cracking job it is NOT acid dipping it is a de-rust process developed by them it only removes rust it does not atack good metal like acid, they did my shell some 3 + years ago and it has sat in my workshop with only areas of flash rust because i took too long to do the work due to other commitments they re- dipped it and baked it dry in their massive oven then powder coated the anti rust primer onto it so it is now protected ready to go to the body shop on Monday.

Re: FFG 549 D restoration
Mike, does that airbox fit within the confines of the chassis leg or have you cut and shut yours? I had a feeling that you modified yours to fit the airbox.
I have it in mind to do something similar with mine. Did you make your own airbox? I have a very large roll of glassfibre mat, so may have a bash at making my own.

Re: FFG 549 D restoration
No change of colour scheme it will be works colours (until someone judges it and then i will get the works car were not white inside at which point you will have to put gaffer tape over my mouth because i may want to point out the money and effort and time that has gone into my car was done for me not so it can be judged against what a proper one look like ) the colour inside and underneath etc is old english white because i like it, trying to blend modern ideas (white engine bay makes it easy to spot leaks, white underneath reveals any cracks in the shell or other stress problems and makes everything easy to see in service but modern whites are not in keeping with an older car, just my take on it but there you go. if the body shop send any more pics through i will update.

Horror flaps??moose wrote:it will have mud flaps and horror flaps but nothing else i have learnt after trying everything to keep paint on the underside nothing is up to the job so just normal paint and touch in after each event and at the end of the year or when looking too scrufffy re-paint properly. i have hot zinc coated the suspension components so that if paint is removed by gravel it should not rust.

Re: FFG 549 D restoration
Erm, not many, Mike. Seriously, I won't be fitting horror flaps. My car is unlikely to see serious rally usage in my ownership, to be honest.
The reason I [cough] borrow [cough] ideas all over the place is because you (and others on here) have built more cars between you than I've had hot Sunday dinners. I don't have that depth of experience but still want to end up with a car that is well-built, reliable, usable and performs as well as I can make it, without spending money needlessly. So I have to focus on what is necessary only. In most respects, that is a good thing.
Anyway, immitation is the most sincere form of flattery!

is it still £10 per box for club members, will be on dyno for 2 hours so will need 10 boxes, how much for P&P to get the air up to mu place.

Re: FFG 549 D restoration
report back from dyno room is that the engine is significantly down on power so all imp owners beware IM's air is expensive for what it is and does not perform like other air available o nthe market stick to the reputable parts suppliers, will be in touch wit hMAlcolm for 10 more boxes.

Re: FFG 549 D restoration
Y'see the problem is that Paul's calibrated air is rather rarefied. As we all know, low atmospheric pressure reduces the available power.

were the works type stripes go faster? i am putting them on to break up the flames on the side
Duk the sill to the floor is welded together horizontal rather than the lips spotted together as per standard then i have skidded the full length of the floor from front wheel arch to rear suspension crossmember.

Great job - looks really good
Do you have a list of the features/modifications you are going to make to the car. I see you have a coupling to disconnect the braking system - with your background you've probably got a whole list of mods up your sleeve that I for one have never thought of!
Cheers
Alastair
