stator is the output , the rotor controls the voltage so winding that would do nothing to the volts , the rotor would need changing to get the 12V you want.
So stator = output
Rotor or armature = voltage
Rectifier converts the AC generated in to DC using diodes
Regulator controls the volts produced by the rotor / armature
Dave, in my case the rotor was not changed, the stator was which is why I have a spare one and which was giving a 24 volt output,

The rectifier was one of those small square ones with the 4 terminals on it.

Normally changing the stator wont change the voltage at all

Having just fitted and adjusted a NOS set of rear shoes on the Singer ive had in the loft at least 10 years ive just noticed they are Asbestos free :roll:

Probably wouldnt stop a stationary bicycle however they are on so we will see - or die trying :(

Been planning this for months and today I finally sorted the double engine lid stays . they only ever had one on the left which isnt up to much really .I made the bottom part of the drivers side from scratch in the end as the factory L/H one was handed completely wrong , just like the mountings for the spring part which i also had to make .

Works perfectly and should now be a bit more wind proof :D

Today was inadvertently a cooling test day .

26˚c Ambient temp , 18 miles of constant driving , some around 40mph to 60mph and ten at a constant 70mph ( 74 on the speedo ) - heater off obviously .

Max temp achieved according to my infra red thing was 84˚C with the gauge showing a fraction past the middle.

Oil pressure at this speed and temp was 47 psi - on tickover it was 23 psi , coolant expansion in the bottle - just over an inch .

Temp after 5 minutes of being turned off 74˚C

Recon thats OK for a rear rad only set up with the heater off in this weather :)

So for as long as I can remember the Singers engine lid has had a slight rattle . This seemed to be caused by the passenger side top buffer not even touching the engine lid added to which the mounting bits on both were knackered so the were loose anyway .

A year or so ago i got some rubber feet off a scrapped generator at work , exactly the same height but a larger diameter which therefor would mean a bigger hole in the car - meaning i put it off.

Anyway today i bit the bullet and fitted them plus i used the original ones but with the mounts cut off and bonded to the lid .

Pics tell the story .

No more rattle :D :D :D

It's the bottom edge buffer arrangement that poorly designed too, the buffers abutt onto the engine lid flange which has no reinforcement behind it in that area meaning over time or if the lid is dropped shut or close by a ham fisted person it bends the flange on the lid and cracks the paint, a doubling up of thickness there, or a small piece of angled steel flat on the inner edge would help no end?

Just in case your wondering why the updates just stopped .

A post to say i still have this although apart from fitting a full set of Mike Dents brake shoes ive done nothing to it .
I used it last Sunday and it ran fine , even put the heater back on - first time since April and thats working well ,
Im not sure it likes sitting for weeks on end doing nothing but as theres other stuff that needed doing around the house as well as doing work on my new toy :D as a result its been its been sadly neglected .
Still it did get washed on Sunday so at least something got done :lol:

Sometimes its the little things :)

Picked up four meters of door pocket edging today , exactly as factory :) - now all fitted on both cars , mine were split - in bits or falling off .
Not anymore :D :D

Bit late - but I just noticed your nice new C Class Merc! 8)

These are a bargain atm. My son recently bought an E Class Estate for little money. They are FAB cars - he loves it!

Some years ago I got hold of a "Star Machine" so I could properly diagnose and service the wife's SMART Roadster. The "STAR machine" has diagnostics for ALL Mercs (and Mitsubishi) including all SMART, Merc Buses and Merc trucks ..and of course the E Class is on there too. The fact I already had a Star Machine influenced his decision to buy a Merc.

We looked at a few E Class before buying the best of the bunch ...he bought the one with no serious faults pending (unfortunately nearly all have some). The sellers (none were Merc Specialists) agreed to let us plug the STAR into the diagnostics port prior to a test drive- which benefited them too because they had no idea about what faults might be on their cars. Usually a diagnostic-only session would cost £100 at a Main Dealer - so the sellers saved a bit of money by allowing us to 'plug-in' before buying. One E class estate we looked at in Leeds had a list of faults as long as your arm!

Fortunately, the E Class my son did buy had just had a new Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) unit fitted. Apparently, according to a Merc Specialist near us, the SBC unit is designed to FAIL after a set number of brake pedal presses (outrageous! :shock: ). I think there has been a recall on this fault? We had no idea about the SBC "design fault" at the time we bought the car - we were just lucky it had just been replaced. I don't know if the C class has the SBC - but I could find out by looking it up on the Star / EPC.

Also to bleed the brakes properly with an SBC fitted (every 2 years) you should do it with the Star Machine connected. The Star remotely operates valves in the SBC in order to systematically build pressure for a proper flush and bleed. Having the Star Machine is a bonus for any DIY Merc owner...otherwise you have to use a Merc Specialist sooner of later. Not an issue if that's what you set out to do, of course :) .

Hope you have bought a good one Dave - they are very nice cars. But just like a lot of moderns they are both blessed and cursed by the presence of computerised electronic control systems

No SBC on this one , i changed the fluid tother week . star showed up two faults , alarm module and crank sensor , both now sorted , it runs fine but the clock gave up recently and although ive tried every trick i know it refuses to work , still if thats the only fault il live with it

That's good. 8)

After I posted I learned, tonight on Wiki, that the SBC was dropped in 2006 and they weren't fitted to most C class anyway so you will have never had this problem - it was a Merc /Bosch design -they got an award for the SBC design apparently (before it was properly rolled out!). :)

Time will tell if its a good buy or not , early W203s suffered badly from rust , mines a facelift ( 2004 on ) so fully galvanised , your right though its the computer problems that will kill these off way before anything , im hoping the clock isnt the start of bad things

Just made a new battery backing panel for the Singer .

These were a factory option basically available to cover up the rust holes in the inner wing caused by the positive earth :shock: :o . I however use them as they eliminate any possibility between the battery terminals and the bodywork,

I used some mega thin fiberglass sheet from work and altered the shape so it fitted better :D

Changed the two fuse feed wires off the battery today on the Vusky , did the Singers yesterday having decided that anything on the positive battery terminal should be red , :)
