Hi all ,
All three cars are now due insurance and the agreed value needs renewing so Im half thinking of upping the Singers from £6000 to £8000 , Im leaving the Vusky ( £6000 ) and the BMW ( £1800 ) as they are but Im thinking replacement value on the Singer at least needs upping.
What are your thoughts on here please .
Do you recon i can pull this off or not :roll:

It's worth the effort, I would think, Noddy. :) To replace your Singer like for like would cost that much - if you could even find a replacement.

Been a while on the updates but things have been happening

But possibly not in that order :lol: .
First of the new news is Peter James insurance have agreed a value of £10,000 on the Singer , never though id own a car that was worth 5 figures and one that i could no longer afford to actually buy :o .
Second news is Vusky related .
First off MOT tomorrow morning so wish it some luck please . :)
The other Vusky news has been a long time coming , 24 years in fact :o :shock:
Like many on here I got the history from the DVLA years ago , this gave me everything they had which was from 1974 to the time i bought it in 91 , stuff missing was because of the infamous pooter update or something . This meant 8 years were completely unknown .
Any way after a bit of digging about I HAZ FOUND STUFF OUT :D :D
I now know the name of the very first owner , the town it was bought in , the actual date it was purchased ( different from the registration date ) and the Garage
that sold it new .
Theres a proper letter on its way and although it cost £12 im well chuffed .
Ive done a map with where its lived , deleted all the addresses etc on this version for privacy,s sake

Some of you may know ive been merrily chopping up Lin bins ,
The final bit was to make something to stuff loose change into , i find it mega annoying rummaging around for parking money and the ashtray has other stuff in it .

ATM = At the moment , AFAIK ( As far as i know ) it doesnt require a PIN ( Personal identification number ) to get my pennies out ATM ( at the moment ) :lol: :lol:

Anyway it passed although the OS ( off side ) headlights beam pattern seemed to be for a LHD ( left hand drive ) car which is most strange as its marked and arrowed for a RHD (right hand drive ) car and looks the same as the LH ( left hand ) headlight

special abbreviation explanations especially for The Nun . :lol: :lol:

Also got some extra time on the ramp to bury its bottom in black wax oil :D

Oh and for those of you who thinks discs rule and drums are shite the brake efficiency on the Vuskys drums ( Total Brake Effort / Vehicle Weight X 100 = % Efficiency ) was 86% , hand brake was 37%.
Truing up the drums inner surface to within 1/4 run out has really made a difference , fronts go from locked solid to spinning free in one notch of the snail cam adjuster .
Now that aint bad in my books

Made a couple of anti fanbelt lossage devises , mainly caused by over exuberant revving :wink: .
Ive had this happen and the belt vanished never to be seen again and its why deep pulleys were made .
Initially I thought id actually invented something but Lars has informed me Ray Payne at Hartwells used this idea ( although probably not like mine ) so although not original im in good company .
Locating tab is vital , the last thing you want is this spinning around as this would remove the belt or bust something , its on the shortest run so deflection doesnt cause any problems and it doesnt get anywhere near the belt when running.
Its made from 2mm thick stainless tube and took some pressing and bending I can tell you :roll: :o

So then this afternoons Wombleism :lol:
Well the initial idea was to respray the bonnet stay which was scratched and chipped all to hell.
Then there was the " what colour " bonnets black and cars foam grey ummmm .
Then there was this length of stainless 2mm thick walled pipe / tube thing i made the fanbelt anti " where the frig did that go " thingy.
UMMMMMM .
So in the end i made a stainless bonnet stay , it was a bit thick and lets face it bl***y impossible to make the actual hook out off without collapsing flat so the hook was removed from the old stay , threaded 5/16 UNF and the inside of the tube was tapped the same about 1 inch down then screwed in with a locknut to keep it where i wanted it , this also made getting the hook angle perfect in relation to the bonnet hole ,
On the other end i technically beat a slightly oversized nail in so that i could bend it tight at the slam pan end without it collapsing , this was left in and drilled for the locating split pins . :D
This at least solved the what colour do i spray it scenario :lol:

Not keen myself on the all black look for a wheel, lots of moderns alloys are like that and to me they look like steel wheels that have lost their trims, you lose the sculptural detail too, plus you dont know if its black paint or just plain filth from brake pads by owners who cant be bothered to clean them, anything but black i reckon.

Update time although its all old news to those on facebook .
SHOCK News 24 report
I had SU carb problems :shock: :o
I lost fast idle on the rear carb so when you used the choke it erm--- choked itself to death .
After a bit of diagnostics it turned out to be wear in the fast idle cam on the rear carb , bad wear in fact which prevented the fast idle adjustment screw from doing anything no matter where i screwed the thing.
Luckily ive a few dead and dying HS2s lying about the place including a matched pair from a Spitfire , I split these down and robbed both fast idle cams and fitted them to my set .
Took a few hours to do / refit and set them back up again but now they are perfect once again , idle is dead smooth and fast idle and choke works well , none of this operation effects the jet settings or mixture so it ran perfect as before .

Repairs on the SUs have been a success , it started and ran fine again this morning so it looks like thats sorted out at least :D

No gloating here either, Noddy. :wink: Glad you got it sorted out.

As Andy says, it looks like the fast idle cam issue may have been caused by excessive wear due to insufficient lubrication. Perhaps SU assumed that all British car engines would develop oil leaks shortly after being built, so no lubrication to the fast idle cams was necessary. :P If so, then what you need is a minor oil leak. :D :wink: :wink:

I ran the Taith Cymru Scenic tour for pre '85 cars back in march with 60 entries and nearly 50% were MG's etc.
Of that 50% two a Midget and a MGB didn't make the start due to SU troubles. So like Strombergs they are failible!

By the by the entrant in the Midget ask if he could come in his modern car to which I said yes in the circumstances so he turned up in a Bentley Convertable! Rather big for some of the Welsh roads we used
At this bridge he had to fold mirrors in and wife guided him over!

Nothings perfect , they do wear out and can be a right pig to set up on a car thats not supposed to have them , its usually simple problems if they dont have worn spindles ( the SUs weak link ) though and often fixable by the road .
Burlen do spindles and the bushes for said so even worn to nothing they can be fixed

So then a bit of playing / pratting about .
Whilst sorting out the SUs I noticed my expansion bottle wobbled about whilst on tickover.
Ive never been really happy with the way I fitted it , fiddling about with the small nut and bolt clamp just wasnt up to my usual fussy standard .
What was needed was some kind of custom made stainless steel jubilee clip but wider plus a small rubber foot on the bottom for anti wobbliness .
Heres what i came up with eventually , first pic is the original set up , the other is the new one :D

Well ive not done much car wise but I have changed the screen washer bottle , ive had a Rootes special accessory bottle fitted for decades but the lid has always leaked and wouldnt tighten up . You can see the blue stains from the leakage :roll:
Anyway I managed to get an earlier version , this has blue writing and a smaller lid which actually tightens up tight and doesnt leak , the brass inlet one way valve fitted in the lid had an outlet hole of less than 2mm which wasnt much good for my uber powerful pump so i had to take this to pieces and fit a wider outlet , I used a bit of copper brake pipe and soldered it in flaring the end so the plastic pipe wont pull off .
Just in case you were wondering the Valve rotates 360˚ in the lid so you can fill it up :D

I could do with replacing mine with something more powerful than the pee-stream of an 80 year old suffering from prostatic hypertrophy! :(

I'm hoping for something more like the jet from a sperm whale's blow-hole! :)

Bare in mind this is an archive pic with the old bottle , pumps on the right , its over 4 inches long and a viscous little sod , im sure its for a 4 jet system , i ripped it out of an old landrover up the scrappys but im not sure its actually from that originally

About a year and a half ago the electronic ignition borked itself on the Vusky ( expensive pertonics unit ).
Anyway i just went back to points and condenser .
Fast forward to today and the poor Vusky wasnt running as well as normal , well it ran fine but wouldnt rev to the normal 6000rpm plus it gets ragged to .
A bit of checking today revealed the points gap was down to 2 thou :o :shock: .
That would be it then.
Set back to 15 thou and its back to normal but BETTER :)

So then --- leaky transaxle
Singers N/S driveshaft seal leaks and always has a bit , i tried a new seal but that didnt work but did notice the driveshaft spider was worn where the seal touches.
Finally found a NOS one on ebay and stuck it in just now .
Heres hoping.
Im planning on taking the worn one into work and using our all singing all dancing surface grinder that turns rusty bits of bar into mirrors and see if i can reclaim the old one.
