Moose's shoes are superb BUT you abzolutely MUST following his bedding in instructions or they will disappoint.

Re: Nods news , Two engine lid stays .
Today was inadvertently a cooling test day .
26˚c Ambient temp , 18 miles of constant driving , some around 40mph to 60mph and ten at a constant 70mph ( 74 on the speedo ) - heater off obviously .
Max temp achieved according to my infra red thing was 84˚C with the gauge showing a fraction past the middle.
Oil pressure at this speed and temp was 47 psi - on tickover it was 23 psi , coolant expansion in the bottle - just over an inch .
Temp after 5 minutes of being turned off 74˚C
Recon thats OK for a rear rad only set up with the heater off in this weather

Re: Nods news , Newness buffers
So for as long as I can remember the Singers engine lid has had a slight rattle . This seemed to be caused by the passenger side top buffer not even touching the engine lid added to which the mounting bits on both were knackered so the were loose anyway .
A year or so ago i got some rubber feet off a scrapped generator at work , exactly the same height but a larger diameter which therefor would mean a bigger hole in the car - meaning i put it off.
Anyway today i bit the bullet and fitted them plus i used the original ones but with the mounts cut off and bonded to the lid .
Pics tell the story .
No more rattle

Nice job, Dave. I like the tippex idea - must get some. Does it make shutting the lid much harder ?

Re: Nods news , Engine lid buffers .
It's the bottom edge buffer arrangement that poorly designed too, the buffers abutt onto the engine lid flange which has no reinforcement behind it in that area meaning over time or if the lid is dropped shut or close by a ham fisted person it bends the flange on the lid and cracks the paint, a doubling up of thickness there, or a small piece of angled steel flat on the inner edge would help no end?

Re: Nods news , Sometimes its the little things .
Bit late - but I just noticed your nice new C Class Merc!
These are a bargain atm. My son recently bought an E Class Estate for little money. They are FAB cars - he loves it!
Some years ago I got hold of a "Star Machine" so I could properly diagnose and service the wife's SMART Roadster. The "STAR machine" has diagnostics for ALL Mercs (and Mitsubishi) including all SMART, Merc Buses and Merc trucks ..and of course the E Class is on there too. The fact I already had a Star Machine influenced his decision to buy a Merc.
We looked at a few E Class before buying the best of the bunch ...he bought the one with no serious faults pending (unfortunately nearly all have some). The sellers (none were Merc Specialists) agreed to let us plug the STAR into the diagnostics port prior to a test drive- which benefited them too because they had no idea about what faults might be on their cars. Usually a diagnostic-only session would cost £100 at a Main Dealer - so the sellers saved a bit of money by allowing us to 'plug-in' before buying. One E class estate we looked at in Leeds had a list of faults as long as your arm!
Fortunately, the E Class my son did buy had just had a new Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) unit fitted. Apparently, according to a Merc Specialist near us, the SBC unit is designed to FAIL after a set number of brake pedal presses (outrageous! ). I think there has been a recall on this fault? We had no idea about the SBC "design fault" at the time we bought the car - we were just lucky it had just been replaced. I don't know if the C class has the SBC - but I could find out by looking it up on the Star / EPC.
Also to bleed the brakes properly with an SBC fitted (every 2 years) you should do it with the Star Machine connected. The Star remotely operates valves in the SBC in order to systematically build pressure for a proper flush and bleed. Having the Star Machine is a bonus for any DIY Merc owner...otherwise you have to use a Merc Specialist sooner of later. Not an issue if that's what you set out to do, of course .
Hope you have bought a good one Dave - they are very nice cars. But just like a lot of moderns they are both blessed and cursed by the presence of computerised electronic control systems

That's good.
After I posted I learned, tonight on Wiki, that the SBC was dropped in 2006 and they weren't fitted to most C class anyway so you will have never had this problem - it was a Merc /Bosch design -they got an award for the SBC design apparently (before it was properly rolled out!).

Time will tell if its a good buy or not , early W203s suffered badly from rust , mines a facelift ( 2004 on ) so fully galvanised , your right though its the computer problems that will kill these off way before anything , im hoping the clock isnt the start of bad things

Re: Nods news , Sometimes its the little things .
Just made a new battery backing panel for the Singer .
These were a factory option basically available to cover up the rust holes in the inner wing caused by the positive earth . I however use them as they eliminate any possibility between the battery terminals and the bodywork,
I used some mega thin fiberglass sheet from work and altered the shape so it fitted better

Re: Nods news , Singers as old as me for a few months
Anyone ever notice that early L717 lenses have two slots a third of the way up inside .
These are for alloy reflectors .
Anyway yesterday whilst faffing about in the loft i found a pair of these so thought id fit em in .
They really do concentrate the light better giving a brighter indicator

Re: Nods news , Time for refection .
Year end report .
Only 7 pages of waffle this year so less than usual.
TBH not much serious stuff was done although respraying the front off side wing was fairly major .
Building the extra engine lid support was a challenge but well worth it .
Other than this it was just bits and pieces that i altered / cleaned / moved .
Have a great Christmas everyone

Re: Nods news , Time for reflection plus year end report .
Back in Nov 2018 I trial fitted one of the very first in tank fuel filters that Bob Picton was doing.
Unknown to him I also fitted a new inline filter by the carbs .
The idea being to test wether anything gets through Bobs filter and is therefor caught and visible in the rear filter .
Well 14 months later im very pleased to report that absolutely nothing got through and the inline filter is spotless .
Therefor ive removed it completely as i deem it unnecessary and got rid of two joints in the fuel line into the bargain .
Pipe ive used is Cohline 2240 . Its suitable for E15 rated petrol , Ethanol, Diesel and Biodiesel fuels so im ready for whats coming .

Does 'BOBS INTANK FILTER' tm sit over the outlet inside the tank? I made something to sit over mine but have not yet fitted it because I was wondering how to make it so it wouldn't move about?

Re: Nods news , Sorting out the rear bumper
Decided to clean the Singers engine today , try as i might i couldnt get in all the nooks and crannies at the timing chain end , nout else for it but remove the rear panel .
Then went for the weekly shop in it ( after putting it back together ) , ran perfectly and the only fault that showed up after being stood for ages was a squeaky top steering column bush , a quick squirt of WD40 soon shut that up

Re: Nods news , Pointless faffing about
Boredoms obviously setting in as i made a stainless and more or less pointless engine mount base for the rear panel as well as a cover for the engine mount ( done last week ) .
Base is the same thickness as the oil cooler mount so it keeps the mount level , i guess its better than the bit of steel the factory used to level the mount up .

why not try it , simple job really , i dont like the bumpers close as they normally are , one tap and its done more damage than if it wasnt fitted

Re: Nods news , Pointless faffing about - lockdown boredom
I lift my rear bumper up an inch or so as well, I feel its too low as standard and other car bumpers are at brake light height and ride over the top of an IMP rear bumper, the fronts are at a better height though.

Re: Nods news , Pointless faffing about - lockdown boredom
Well the bumpers won't do much as they arent substantial enough but they will resist a parking nudge and protect the body, the originals are too low and as Noddy said too close to the body really, just gives a little extra, but any bumper is better than no bumper, you really are risking chance then.

They don't raise the bumper, do they ? They move it away from the body I think.

Well, we live and learn. I wonder what the thought process was : protecting the van floor perhaps, from all those milk churns ?

I'm planning on doing the same when LNK is finally restored, eventually.
If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?

Yes the black frame detail looks 'right'.
Just need to make sure everyone closes the door by holding the handle .... rings on fingers and closing doors using the window frame does my head in ..wrong on so many levels. My wife still needs a "Handle!" prompt most of the time.
Have you noticed TV stars in borrowed classic cars ALWAYS close the door using the window frame!

Re: Nods news , Styling exercise . opinions needed
Well the window frames on the doors were shot paint wise , peeled of my black tape and some paint came off , there was also a bit of rust , mainly in the curved top .
So ive dived in , ripped all the paint off and etch primed it .
Im going black as a trial , ive no foam grey paint anyway so ive little choice .
Anyway we will see once and for all what it looks like once its done .
In the mean time passenger door rear glass runner is very shot

Go for it Dave! Even though I'm a little biased
I sprayed the door frames and the B-pillars satin black a few years ago and I think it looks good as it matches the side window rubbers.

Definitely needs the chrome 1/4 light frame to be black as well.

Re: Nods news , Styling exercise . opinions needed
Both door frames are now painted black.
As a trial ive done the quaterlight chrome black as well , its done in some special 3M tape , very thin and is folded and held in place both by the rubber seal and the glass channel , therefor removable with any damage to the chrome - although the passenger side chrome is bad anyway

Re: Nods news , Styling exercise . opinions needed
One sides done , not convinced about the black quaterlight upright - might be a step too far , still as its just tape its easily reversed .
However really pleased with the rest
