Wise words - and yes mine is fused --- everywhere on everythingThe Nun wrote:Yes looks like a Caledonian switch, no doubt yours is ok and done, but if you fit the switch to a non fused IMP, the switch can be very easily smashed when selecting reversing if you lever ball is worn meaning the lever can move more than intended, the switch breaks then the contacts can go to earth, result smoke and possible fire.
Fit a line fuse if your car doesnt have them in a fuse box, it has happened and a fire nearly occured so beware!

Re: Nods news - Vusky has a reversing light
All excellent work, Dave. But your shoes need cleaning !!
My take on the reversing light switch was to mount a reed switch and magnet internally. You can actually get reflective BLACK exterior grade self adhesive vinyl, you know ?

Re: Nods news - Vusky has a reversing light
Initial Alternator stator rewind test results are in after i finally got the thing together .
Heres the initial test results .
Cut in speed was at 2000RPM -DIRECT DRIVE ie. one to one from the test bed motor Going on pulley side thats about 800RPM engine speed.
Putting a massive load on it at 2000RPM ( Tickover-ish ) produced the following
Direct drive on load 18.74A at 53.8˚C and 17.66A at 58.5˚C
Which means it will produce 18A on tick over alone
At 2500RPM DIRECT DRIVE it produced 32.00A at 53.8˚C and 30.00A at 63.00˚C.
Which means it will produce 32A at roughly 1100 RPM.
I never got any hotter than this 63˚C which is good .
It maxed out at 4000RPM ( DIRECT DRIVE ) producing 47A - Thereafter ragging the hell out of it produced no more .
So it would appear is produces a lot of Amps very early and peaks out much sooner .
This peaking out shouldnt make any real difference as I know the Vusky uses less than 40A with everything on , the high output very early on should be great for stop - start traffic with lights / heater fan / indicators on etc etc .
Wont be fitting it yet as i want to run more tests but it seems OK so far.

Re: Nods news - Stator rewind results
Are you thinking of making a few up to sell if its successful, or mod those owners already have if they would like it done or is it just a one off exercise on your part to see what can be done if you know how to do it?

Re: Nods news - Stator rewind results
Well I bit the bullet today and fitted it and what a difference it makes too .
I used to get strange things like the heater fan speed vary in sync with the indicators whilst sat stationary as the alternator struggled to cope at low revs - this evening i tried leaving it ticking over - main beam on - heater fan on and finally hazards .
When the hazards were operated the heater fan didnt vary at all and remained a constant speed , nothing dimmed and the Hazard flash rate was normal - engine revs dropped 200RPM but thats to be expected .
So all in all a resounding success

Re: Nods news - Stator rewind results = SUCCESS .
Good idea, but servo motors controlling the throttle and choke were once the cause of cars being so unreliable, they would have a mind of their own and your car would suddenly accelerate away even though you werent touching the accelerator, i remember driving a Montego, remember them? And it took off at 3000 rpm wheels spinning, no engine control at all, that was due to mechanical servo motors up the creek so to speak, the more you fit the more there is to go wrong springs to mind.?

Yer tis fitted - the extra earth lead is just a precaution - adjusting strap is damped with a rubber bush so no connection and the main mount gets covered in oil and other crap which may or may not effect it

I enjoy reading all what youre doing as it gives me ideas and inspiration and good to see what others do and different ways to solve a problem, and besides if you werent here typing 6000 posts you would be under the Singer, no good for a bad back, or decorating the house probably, no good for the legs and neck?

You lose 200 rpm because of the extra effort on idle so i suppose you must lose a very small degree of performance,
Wasnt it Newton who said you cant get more out without putting more in? Or was that due to the apple hit him on the head?

From an old metal cover for a capacitor on a mains motor , an imp door glass stop and the brush cover band from an old starter plus a bulb holder and a red lens Ive knocked up an experimental high level brake light that looks more period - strange idea seeing as they werent invented then but hay ho im weird like that

What style of rear window seal are you using? Is it one of Malcs lippy latest ones? Thats what im trying, seems a lot better than i had on my 75 Sport, looks as though it will have a better job of keeping the water out anyway.
Just wondered if yours was his latest? If so hows it working?

Re: Nods news - Period style high level brake light experime
Be interesting to see if this works then, the frames original and excellent, no twist and hasnt been sprained at the hinges, the seal has fitted that and the body really good so far, i mean it looks as if it will work well..
Just waiting for the stainless screws to come then on it can go and give Andys stays a test too
I have had to extend the screen latch, only a fraction, in the past to get the window to shut before without slamming and that was with the late factory seals, they werent ideal either.

Since you are all old lags and I'm a relatively new boy I think it's worth a mention that I have had nothing but good experiences in this club. I think we are all happy to see imps running and I have been helped out of trouble a few times by members giving time, advice and spare parts just for the love of the cars. Thank you.

From the archives .
Anyone who fits a 3 inch Bilge blower to replace the wheezy Smiths effort might like to copy the way i sealed the inlet end.
Just get another Imp fan case and cut off the outlet just as it bends to its full diameter - this way it wont fall in - the inner edge of it where it touches the bilge fan is a tiny bit too small so dressing it back with a flap wheel sorts that out .
The four small bent in parts are to help get it out should you need to.
Once the fan is fitted it wont go anywhere.
PS I sprayed it in red to use up an old can of paint

Re: Nods news - Im a small fan.
Well the aerial move has been a great success .
Not only can Annie now use the passenger window but the reception is much better as well .
I did shorten the aerial where it screws into its window mount so its closer to the gutter by 20mm , thread was 2BA

Re: Nods news - heater fan grill
So the Singers plastic heater fan grill gave up yonks ago , i had a bit of large mesh in its place but tother day a soggy leaf got in - i thought the fan had borked itself such was the noise LOL .
So not having another one I had to think laterally .
Rummaging at work an old 60s fan guard for an electric motor was found that looked like it might work,
A bit of cutting / grinding / flattening and painting later its done.
i used the edge of the old plastic grill as a seal

Re: Nods news - Heater fan grill bodgimication
To try and get the Singer Mojo back ive sorted the one thing thats annoyed me on it - the OSF arch was repaired before i got it and was never correct IMHO - No idea who did it though .
Rust was starting to come through But considering it was pre 87 its done well ---
so it was time to grind grind - chop chop etc etc
Unlike African Imp who is allowed to bondo / epoxy his car back together over here its a welding job.
weldings not very neat as i was scared of doing a proper run due to the amount of waxoil in it - didnt fancy another fire if im honest , every short run resulted in a drip of waxoil - scary stuff .
Ran out of time to finish the job properly paint wise but this will do for a few weeks til ive some time off

Re: Nods news - Shock news 24 , Singer has rust - now gone
Theres even more risk if youre trying to gas weld it though, you need a fire watcher with extinguisher at the ready ideally, still the job doesnt look half bad, not easy when you cant get the car right up to working height.

Re: Nods news - Oil leak solved.
Cheers Lars - its quite good a repair considering i made the bits myself - took three hours to make and weld on plus the filling / painting bit .
One thing ive finally solved was an oil leak - its been quite oily around the filter housing although it proved difficult to trace .
Finally yesterday after getting back i found the little bleeder .
It was in fact the long oil cooler pipe , not where it screws on but where the fitting is crimped onto the pipe - oil was getting past the crimped area and running down the pipe to the oil filter housing where it spread everywhere.
So today i blew a wadge of dosh and had two pipes made locally by a company ive used before and have been trading 40 odd years .
Made whilst I waited - it took 1/4 hour.
Fittings are O ring sealed as well which must be better that just a taper seal - They will take way more pressure than can ever be crated by the engine.but were not cheap

Reminds me about the oil cooler hoses on the Cali. They've been stored for 40 years so should be changed asap. Stored with oil in them so perhaps fine inside but despite there aren't any visible external signs of drying or splitting it would be stupid to trust them now.
