Re: Nods news , Utter bodgery - hiding stuff
I do like these mods you keep fining to do. Are those K&N elements in the filters? looks like they need a clean and an oil, if they are K&N they should have a red tinge to them. You can by cleaning and re-oiling kits, just a thought if you are stuck for something to do

Re: Nods news , getting a handle on things
Square drive on one of my Wilmot Breeden locking engine lid handles was very worn with a bucket load of play when you turned the handle , it sometimes went out of line meaning locking it was tricky .
Rather than try and find another ive replaced the drive with a brass one i turned at work .
Tother handles fine so that can stay as is for now .
Make do and mend I say

Re: Nods news , A fixorage happened
Took the Singer out today - first time in 3 weeks .
UMM --- Sommats not quite right - feels like the timings gone out - timing only goes out if sommats gone amiss be it fuel quality or ignition .
Anyhoo some quick checks later it turns out the points were a bit pitted ( not excessive though ) . What was excessive was the 20 thou gap
So put some NOS Genuine Lucas points from the 70s in , set the gap to 16 thou , re checked timing ( bang on ) , checked the dwell on tickover and high revs ( 57Λ and stable to within 3 degrees at 5000 RPM )
Went to get some fresh fuel - rechecked the gap ( unaltered ) and Its now back to normal
Have an old pic from way back when at a place i cant remember

Re: Nods news , A fixorage happened
Back on Barnabys timing .
Seeing as this has a gauge fitted ( taken off the inlet itself ) I decided to try and set it by vacuum .
Basically its slacken the dizzy clamp , fire up the motor turn dizzy one way or tother to achieve the highest vacuum reading then back it off about 3mm or so. Highest reading goes well into the yellow but thats way too far so im initially going for the high end of the idle segment .
Seems to work fine so far , no pinking etc but if it does il back it off a tad more
PS Never seen another Vac gauge marked as KPa , always seem to be in INS hg

Re: Nods news , A fixorage happened
Oh cock !!!
So a full proper service on the Singer has started
Oil β
Oil filter β
Brake fluid change - well shite
That went to the dogs !!!!
NSR , OSR , and NSF bled perfectly , on the OSF the bleed nipple just snapped off
So need to change the cylinder - well actually change both on this side as tother one looked a bit iffy anyhoo .
Fit cylinders - go to re-align the flexi and tadaa - feekin pipe shears off
So two new cylinders on the drivers side ( was going to change the passengers side but i dont have any and they look and work perfectly ) , Then make a new hard line and fit this .
Bleed the bleedin brakes yet again and finally ive working brakes β
Also adjusted em all , greased up the king pins , topped up the steering rack and checked for any leaks after some spirited driving
Im struggling to keep on top of two cars , Singers been neglected for a few years now as its easier to just concentrate on the more important Barnaby and sod the Singer .
There may come a time when im forced to part with it

Re: Nods news , A fixorage happened
Back to faffing about .
Most will know im an advocate for Twin SUs - easy to tune and ultra reliable , there was however one catch discovered early on - well on my set ups anyhoo .
That is the throttle pedal overall travel is far greater than the butterfly travel on the SUs so it was possible to over operate the pedal and potentially stretch or even snap the throttle cable .
Back in 2016 I re-engineeded the throttle pedal pivots so the pivots were phosfer bronze bushes rather than the flat bit of steel which wore a deep groove in the arm , clunked and caused lots of free play in throttle operation .
By default part of this mod allowed me to alter the pedals resting position so it was easy to control the overall pedal travel.
A good while ago I fitted an adjustable pedal stop on Barnaby the van thing and finally Ive done the same on the Singer .
Its now impossible over overcook the pedal movement in relation to the carbs even when trying to ram the pedal through the floor

Re: Nods news , A fixorage happened
The hideous job of the rear hoses has been achieved
Drivers side was easy , Passenger side put up a bit of a fight probably because its a bit cack handed for me .
Easy way is cut the old hoses first , makes it easier to remove the remains . A plastic bag under the reservoir cap stops most of the fluid coming out = handy tip
Anyhoo I haz brakes with no leaks . Once fitted i pulled the brake light fuse - jammed the pedal down with some wood and left it 10 minutes to check for leaks under pressure - result was no leaks and no loss of pressure so il take that as a win . Pedal travel is around 1 1/2 inch total - no pulling to either side , just need to bed the new shoes in more .
buried the nuts etc with Lanoguard grease then cleaned and sprayed the area with normal lanoguard .
Not sure what size hole is in a soft line but the old ones were around 2mm .

Re: Nods news , A fixorage happened
I done a fixorage again
Boot lock now works .
Striped it down and found two issues , main one was a jammed tumbler doodab , one of the tiny springs busted .
Second was the alloy collar bit was worn and out of line.
Anyhoo I replaced the tumbler spring and filled the collar flat , also made a new spacer for the collar to push bolt thingy as mine seemed to be missing .
Getting it back together was easier that i thought.
Alloy casting is peened over the steel top and this had to be filled off to get it apart . Solution was simply to countersink the steel top and use a tapered punch to flair the alloy into the countersink .
Works , locks and unlocks .
RESULT

Dave,
Thanks, now I know how you get in to your vehicle - at least the boot
Maybe, not the best idea to show your key no.

Re: Nods news , A fixorage happened
You can open an imp lock with a paperclip, the early locks, including ignition, are about as simple as you can get bar one on a biscuit tin. If the locks seen more than a couple of years use just about any key that fits in the slot will open it,
Imps were from the age when folk behaved themselves and respected other peoples property, unlike nowadays, you need additional security devices like krookloks and gear lever locks or some cretin will soon have it away, just for a laugh like.
