Re: Nods news. UMM Maybe a tad warm
Went for a little hoon about on the way home from work down the A303 at a steady 70 plus , I noticed that the temp gauge started to rise and got to the end of the little white section which ive never seen before .
Not trusting the aged gauge i pointed the laser temperature thingy at it .
Top of rad was 98.2˚C , Stat casting was 84˚C , Bottom of rad was 54˚C
Heater was naturally off as i dont wish to slow cook myself .
Question is do i need to PANIC !!!!!!! .
Car ran superbly and coolant only rose 10mm in the expansion bottle as per normal .
BTW the bottom of the white section on the gauge reads 78˚C ( top of rad on the laser thingy ) .
LeC or other fonts of all things cooling what do ya recon ?

Well, I'm no font but first observation is that the rad and fan are clearly performing very well to achieve such an impressive temperature drop of 30° from top to bottom.

i have a capillary gauge but fitted three of these one on stat housing read same as my temp gun which was good and i fitted one to sump pan and one to oil cooler all confirmed the gauge i bought and checked calibration of is still reading correctly. Till you know the temp for real you do not know if you have a problem.

Hello Noddy,
Been in the garden all day cleaning green slime off garden furniture (with a pressure hose) then teak oiling the stuff so only just seen your message. Got soaked with back spray which was nice on a day like today.
Normally summer air temp in this country is 15-18c (well at least it is here in the cold North!), I guess today the ambient down you way was well over 25C - ie at least 10C higher than the norm... so it's got to run hotter.
I find the IR temp gun is pretty much spot-on so your readings could make sense. The water at the top of the a full rad (going into the expansion tank) is not necessarily circulating efficiently, so 98C at the very top (although obviously V hot ) won't necessarily be representative of the current temps in the top hose ...esp if you have 84C at the stat.
I'd be more concerned with oil temps because the oil shares the heat load with the coolant. If the oil is getting too hot then you will see hotter coolant temps too.
If you have an oil pressure gauge then it will tell you when the oil is too hot and not coming back into grade after a motorway run because pressures will be lower than normal...this is what I'd be more concerned with.
Those water temps are OK as long as they are fairly stable and you have a good rad pressure cap to reduce steaming at the water jacket surfaces.
Do you run an oil pressure gauge?

Re: Nods news.Maybe a tad warm . LeC /fonts to front desk pl
Cheers for the reply , I do run an oil pressure gauge . oil pressure was at a fraction below 50 psi at this temperature , tickover pressure was above 20PSI although i cant remember exactly what it was , its a full face capillary gauge range 0 to 100 , its usually a bit above 50 so it dropped a tad .
I have a separate expansion tank with the ( 7lb ) cap fitted , rad is full to the brim with a blank cap fitted so the IR gun was pointing at coolant in the rad and not an air gap as it were .
On the run home on normal roads the temp recovered gradually although still a bit hotter than is normal , it was 27˚C outside , stat is 82˚

Fairy snuff.
As long as you are using a good oil that bounces back into grade after repeated heat cycles then you should be OK.
So what were the ambient air temps during the run?
Remember too that the intake air will be hotter on a warm day so combustion temps will automatically be higher which means the pistons will be hotter and the oil will have to absorb more heat especially on a motorway.
If you leaned off the mixture recently, or if the ignition is retarded then it'll all add to the heat in the cylinders.
Cooler intake air, a slightly richer mixture and spot-on ignition timing are other measures you can take as well as improving oil cooling - these things can get overlooked when temps rise and the water cooling system becomes the focus of attention when maybe it's doing the best it can under the circumstances.

Ive given the Singer a proper checkover and have found the front carb is running a tiny bit weaker than the rear which is perfect , maybe this will help the cooling a tad. Other than this minor thing all seems good.

Re: Nods news.
Well everything seems OK at the moment , got the mixture more or less spot on , cars running superbly , I did 70 miles yesterday sightseeing and its very responsive .
Today its been raining hard so ive shoved it outside for a new screen seal test which after 2 1/2 hours is still bone dry as is the rest of them including the infamous rear window .
Have a pic from yesterday

Re: Nods news.Small update wiv added photo,s
Very nice Dave. By the way, I've been meaning to post a follow-up regarding the superb rear hatch prop you made. I used it in anger at our last end-of-month meeting. Other than the obvious increase in exhaust noise which I expected (Stan isn't exactly quiet anyway), there were no fumes-into-the-cabin issues, the fit to my hatch and lock needed only minor fettling and all worked very well. I'm not sure I could convince Princess Lauren nor the wife to accept its value on a longer trip than into town, but i'd probably use it if just on my own. Interesting to hear the exhaust rasping away though

Re: Nods news.Small update wiv added photo,s
Glad the props OK for you and more important theres no fume entry , folk keep blaming the rear window for this but im convinced it has nothing whatsoever to do with with a zorst filled car .
As for the fettling every car seems different and i only had mine to try it on , the length of the plastic pipe on the hook part is the only part that might need some alteration from what i found whilst designing these

Re: Nods news.Small update wiv added photo,s
So then ive finally fixoraged the one annoying thing on the Singer.
Drivers side window winder was very worn and making a sound like an old ship when wound up and down with loooooads of play on the handle , so much so the window sometimes jumped down 10mm or so if you went over a speed bump , its not the channels but deffo the winder .
So rummaged for some spare ones and found only passenger side units --- damn it.
However after a bit of thinking it was quite easy to convert the passengers side to work on the drivers side by moving the arm on the gearing and turning the spring over .Arm pivots fine to the new position on the lower rivet so this remains undisturbed . I tapped a thread and used a nut and bolt instead of the removed rivet , this I fitted using thread lock .
Theres at least three types of winder which doesnt help.
Some pics which might help explain

Re: Nods news. Window winder handing conversion
Excellent Dave. Good use of the grey matter there It looks like the late one has had some paring of the material : saves weight, but more importantly to Chrysler, saves money. I wonder how many others have dumped perfectly reclaimable mechanisms, purely because they were the "wrong hand". I've seen this with alternators where the front bracket seems to be unsuitable for a particular use, when removing the screws and spinning the front around can save the day.

Re: Nods National news.
Trip up for me was uneventful and i did 333.4 miles in 7 hours stopping twice , trip home was also uneventful except after i came off the motorway at Bridgewater where tickover had suddenly vanished into the ether , car still drove fine however so plodded on getting home at 12.10 having left at 4.45 , total milage was 661 .
Used no coolant and i took a pic of the oil used one way only , not sure how much but not a huge amount . Tickover issue was a carb to inlet gasket that wasnt sealing so sorted that this morning
A pic of the oil used on the way up , used the same on the way back so at least its consistently eating the stuff
Thank you,s etc are on the Darlington thread in case you think i havent bothered

Re: Nods National news
Glad you got back ok despite the minor glitch. Prety good considering the miles you covered.
My trip was a little shorter, 240 miles to home, via the transporter bridge, it took almost exactly 4 hours. My engine also used no coolant, but more than made up for it with its thurst for oil! A quart each way That's a half a gallon in 590 miles! Looks like a winter of engine overhaul is ahead, at least the top end anyway.

Re: Nods news , new toy
New car is now home , first issue was the dynamo is borked as is the regulator so ive converted it to negative earth and fitted an old Denso i had lying about as you do .
Now charging at 14.40V so its drivable at least , ive left all the dynamo wiring in situ so its a reversible mod

Re: Nods news , new toy
Looks nice and original and i see its got the air filter housing with the hole above the carb too?, theres reason for those, cant remember what it was? Some pre flametrap emissions system?
It may be running too lean if its open aside from air short circuiting the filter?

I went without several years ago and used illuminated led fittings to attach the plate to the bracket. One has recently failed so I may need to replace it.

Personally, I'd stick with. not without. But your car, your choice, your ideas!
More pics of the new blue saloon please. We're bored with the Vusky and the Chamois now you've got a new one to play with.
Another 'blank canvas' for 'us' all...!
