Re: Nods news, Bonnets back from respray , pics of the proce
What was your thinking for having the black gloss bonnet? Wasnt the original idea supposed to they were matt finish for rallying and reduce the glare thrown up so the driver could see better? If you had to have the bonnet repainted gloss would it not be better to have it the original White now? that wouldnt throw so much glare up as a nice shiney black one, at least I wouldnt have thought so?
Just wondered on the theory behind your idea, looks ok nice job whatever.

Re: Nods news, Bonnets back from respray , pics of the proce
Back in the day, our local Morris Oxford taxis were white with a black bonnet, to distinguish them from "normal" cars. Current day cabs in Brighton have a pale green bonnet for the same reason. Perhaps Daves Chamois had delusions of grandeur and wanted to grow up to be a taxi !

Ah yes, the Harlequin. Volkwagen's PR man told me they built and sprayed normal Polo shells in single colours, then mixed up the removable panels. If you ordered one you never knew exactly which panel would be which colour. The V5 document described the car's colour as 'various', although the basic structure minus wings, doors, bumpers etc was all one colour.

Re: Nods news, Bonnets back from respray , pics of the proce
My first thought was ,picture looked very similar to toy car bonnet as listed on ebay on Imps listing
Looks really good Dave. Nice to have such a good example, which is why l went down the fibre glass route, thought it would be a struggle to get one so good.
While we're on car colours look at what l saw yesterday
Assumed its Wrapped (or is it Rapped?)

Should be fine - rolling radius for a 155 / 80 / 12 matches my 185 / 60 / 13s more or less exactly - diff should be able to deal with the -1% differenceBKasl wrote:The 12 " wheel you are using for a spare, is that useable with 13" wheels on the car? Wont it make a rotation difference primarily on the rear for possible damage?
155 / 80 / 12 rolling radius is 21.76mm
185 / 60 / 13 rolling radius is 21.74mm
Difference in Diameter: percentage = -0.18% actual = -1mm

Re: Nods news, Rear window seal - a new discovery
Well the factory window frame seal on the Singer has finally given up
Good news --- Ive got a NOS genuine one as a spare
Confusing news -- profile on the new one is different
Which must mean there were different versions of window frame seal - who knew
Anyway it had to be worth trying as the old one was leaking a tad .
New one fitted superbly and sits how i remember genuine ones fitting - ie. curled towards the frames outer face.
Window shuts fine - in fact better as ive had to adjust the catch so it closes tighter and the new seal is leak proof between it and the frame seal however the frame seal to car window aperture does leak a tiny bit under heavy hosing .
I think its Best to check this properly next time it rains as a hose is no substitute for actual rain.
Il let the pics do the talking

Re: Nods news, Vusky sprouts a hole
I have done a paint job on my welded in repair that Clark Dawson would ---------------------- cry over as being totally crap.
However needs must , paint match in my rattle can was totally wrong " but " its spot on in my old touch up tin ,
So
Brush paint a load on
Leave to dry off
Wet and dry the life out of it
T cut to get a sort of decent finish and
Voila - i give you my most bodged paint job EVA --LOL

Re: Nods news, Rust fixorage on the Singer
So this poxy bit of rust on the singer proved to be an arse - mainly as the things full of waxoil which = Fire .
Welding was knervwracking and slow because of this even after id shoved some damp flannels down where i was welding there was smoke and the potential for a disaster .
Consequently the welding aint pretty but it will have to do

Re: Nods news, Yet more welding - this time the Singer
Looks quite professional, Ive seen so called garage repair specialists work not come out as good as that and youve retained the correct look and profiles too, a job well done I think.
Had the waxoyl actually gotten behind that bit, I know the inner wing and outer can touch at that point which is why it corrodes as the anti rust cannot penetrate behind?

Re: Nods news, Yet more welding - this time the Singer
Thats one problem when youve got an original car and its looks ok but whats behind around the seams you dont know and you think youve anti rusted it but of course it doesnt get right into where its most needed half the time, I found that out when I re paneled my Sport, that had been Ziebarted from new and everywhere that stuff had got too was like brand new perfect, but it never got into where the inner and outer arches touch simply because it couldnt get into there, Rootes/Chrysler seemed to put some sort of caulking between in that area which doesnt help one bit of course.
Ive rust proofed my Chamois best I can with hot waxoyl poured and sprayed in, but you always wonder if its got in all those spots, which I doubt?

Re: Nods news, Yet more welding - this time the Singer
Peter - if you want to try to get something between the arch lips where they are spot welded together - try pouring in (or very liberally spraying) lots of WD40 onto the inside of the outer wing panel so that it runs down and penetrates between the two skins.

Re: Nods news, Yet more welding - this time the Singer
Well, a reasonable suggestion, except long term WD40 is merely a film, and wont prevent the sort of corrosion we are talking about here. But taking the method on board, perhaps the biker/aircraftsmans friend would be a good option ? ACF50.

Re: Nods news, Yet more welding - this time the Singer
A quick one coat spray of top coat on the Singers repair just to see what it looks like.
At least its all solid metal and not rust / chicken wire / bondo .
Needs more work but the basic shapes good i think - Inner part still to do but the primers just been put on so not till later in the week .
A few more days on axle stands before its done

Well it's taken me a good 2 weeks of here and there reading, but I have finally finished all 115 of your wonderful thread, Dave!
You're a true inspiration to anyone wishing to look after any car, not just an Imp. I've never come across anyone with such a broad spectrum of technical skills under their hat - electrician, welder, seamster, painter, fabricator - simply incredible.
Your cars are a credit to you. I hope that one day I can park next to you in the masterclass line!

Mine "was" done in celly and the boo boos were still there, hence the reason for me getting it all redone in modern without the boo boos. I can see if you want the original patina look then celly gives the flatter more lived in finish.

Looking very good. I understand the manifold is from down under (Frank Schoenberger, aka "bodgy" on here).
Will be interesting to read your comments about performance and sound once it's fitted down under the Vusky.

Re: Nods news, Factory type roof rack + new zorst
Sometimes you keep some random bits of junk for upwards of 25 years for no real reason .
Back in the dim distant past Janspeed zorsts has chrome plated tailpipes with a curled around end either pressed in or done actually on the pipe itself .
When the box on my first Imp gave up ( twas on my Stiletto ) i kept the tailpipe part .
Today it actually got used - i removed the curled around end and pressed it into the new tailpipe .
Finishes it of a treat and one tiny part of ARX 220J lives again

There was a bit of a battle with a few bolts but eventually the Vuskys new roof rack is now fully dismembered ready for re-plating
