Re: Nods news. Tiny update , leakage
There seems to be rust coloured water coming from the Singers water pump , rust must be off the impeller and the seal is almost certainly borked.

Re: Nods news. Tiny update , I Haz a leakage .
Most of the new cars have them now and you don't hear of them packing up like the old belt driven ones,
Imp pumps are fine if the car is used really regularly its when its standing for periods, like off the road during winter you get the problems it seems.
I was thinking about an electric one, we shall see, I'd like to see an IMP with one to see and whether they are noisy running.

Not entirely true, Peter. They are only plastic. VW and BMW ones are often going. But you takes a chance as with anything

Yep. Which was the way they should have been from the off . In similar fashion to the likes of Mondeos that have plastic impellers on standard type water pumps.

Re: Nods news. Tiny update , I Haz a leakage .
New pump fitted , Il fire it up tomorrow
I pulled the new pump apart first just to check things were all OK and to add some Hylomar blue on the casting mating joints where the gasket sits . Ive always done this as i had a new one leak on the joint once , All put together with lashings of copper grease on the 4 through bolts , the pulley and everywhere else except the 4 fan blade bolts which i leave dry . heres hoping its going to be fine .

Re: Nods news. Tiny update , I Haz a leakage .
Well the pump seems to be fine , went for a 5 mile drive and im just waiting for it to cool down then i can top it up as required , Car bleeds itself topping up the rad from the expansion bottle as i drive so at least standing outside in the freezing cold isnt necessary .

Re: Nods news. Tiny update , I Haz a leakage , fixed .
Started on the old pump , it seems the surface on the impellor the seal runs on ( pulley end )was corroded / pitted causing the leak , ive turned both seal surfaces on a lathe so they are absolutely perfect .
New bearings are here ready so just waiting on the seals from Malc and i should be able to repair this old pump and give it a new lease of life for less than 20 notes .

Re: Nods news. Tiny update , problem with the old pump found
Dave, just experienced a problem with a new batch of seals, having rebuilt near 50 water pumps and had no problems with the seals sealing on to fresh machined surfaces , the latest seals didn't extend far enough to seat on the rotor faces with sufficient pressure or seal properly ,on inspection olthough the seal had the same type number they were 1 mm shorter than the earlier ones, this clearly something to watch out for when rebuilding pumps., I returned the seals and await a replacement batch.

No Baz , i tried and they leak .
Talking of leaks the fuel tank union has sprung one , simple fix as its the tank to adaptor one not the adaptor to pipe , 1/2 hour and the jobs a good-un , helped mainly by my mod which allows the fuel tank to be removed even if its 3/4 full

Re: Nods news. Tiny update , More leakage sorted .
Thats how the singers is done except the rubber pipe goes straight to the fuel pump with a shut off tap before so removing the tank or the pump doesnt require the tank to be emptied

Re: Nods news. Tiny update , Rear wheel centres being made
Making some new Allycat centres for the rear wheels as the genuine ones the correct size seem to be made of fresh T Rex and Dodo eggs .
Il let the pics and their writings tell the story .
Pics of these fitted will follow once the sikaflex has cured

I noticed the other day on a new Rolls Royce Phantom I was looking at, the badges in the wheels centres are weighted and revolve so the badge stays the right way up as the wheel turns, I thought at the time thats almost as ingenious as Noddy ideas

Re: Nods news. Tiny update , Rear wheel centre making .
Caps are now finished and fitted
For added overkill i fitted 4 screws in each one , the sides of the Allycat caps are 6mm thick so drilling 2mm holes in and adding screws is easy , I used the cord grip screws from household 3 pin plugs as they are really thin and designed to be screwed into plastic , Caps look and fit perfectly .

Re: Nods news. Tiny update , Rear wheel centre making .
Just seen your post Peter. Most Rolls-Royces and Bentleys have this feature and have done for many years. Like you, I remember the first time I saw it I was very impressed at the attention to detail, a really nice touch. I suspect they have Patented it otherwise I'm sure many other 'prestige' manufacturers would have adopted this. The Nun wrote:I noticed the other day on a new Rolls Royce Phantom I was looking at, the badges in the wheels centres are weighted and revolve so the badge stays the right way up as the wheel turns
Rolls-Royces are full of innovative features. Many come with an umbrella, often ingeniously hidden, in case inclement weather dares to try and spoil the occupants' coiffures. Other manufacturers have tried to copy this feature, some less successfully than others…

Re: Nods news.
Not much to report really as ive not done much .
Since i changed the K@N Filters a while back using bits of saucepan etc in their mod to fit ive been periodically checking the plug colours , fine tuning the timing etc just to get it as efficient as possible.
Last weekend i drove to Bristol classic car show and noticed just how well she was running , The best ever in fact. I think the extra air flow from the bigger filters has improved things somewhat
Checked the plug colour and found this which i recon is nigh on perfect ( cue LeC telling me its terrible )

Re: Nods news. LeC to the Nod phone please .
Looks very good and quite clean and lean. As long as it's running well at that level of leaness then all is good. If it begins to pop and bang on the over run it might be too lean to fully burn with the degree of ignition advance set (weak mixtures are hard to ignite and they burn more slowly). Unburnt fuel exits with the exhaust gases and ignites inside the hot pipe hence a pops can be heard with very lean mixtures.

Thanks LeC , No popping , banging and very smooth on acceleration and over-run , feels quite torquey as well and copes very well with 4 th gear at quite low speeds and still pulls cleanly.

Final bit of foam grey plastic fantastic although this wasnt the aim which was in fact to change the extremely rusty rear hatch handle screws which are now longer brass ones.

I use these for the bumper irons between it and the body, 35mm sq hard rubber furniture feet floor protectors, just drill a hole in the middle to suit the bolt. Black matches the bumper iron, not sure they do Maroon Lin bins?

All three cars are now due insurance and the agreed value needs renewing so Im half thinking of upping the Singers from £6000 to £8000 , Im leaving the Vusky ( £6000 ) and the BMW ( £1800 ) as they are but Im thinking replacement value on the Singer at least needs upping.
What are your thoughts on here please .
Do you recon i can pull this off or not

Re: Nods news. insurance valuation time again
It's worth the effort, I would think, Noddy. To replace your Singer like for like would cost that much - if you could even find a replacement.

Re: Nods news. I haz new news
Been a while on the updates but things have been happening
I haz
Made stuff
Fixed stuff
Sorted stuff
But possibly not in that order .
First of the new news is Peter James insurance have agreed a value of £10,000 on the Singer , never though id own a car that was worth 5 figures and one that i could no longer afford to actually buy .
Second news is Vusky related .
First off MOT tomorrow morning so wish it some luck please .
The other Vusky news has been a long time coming , 24 years in fact
Like many on here I got the history from the DVLA years ago , this gave me everything they had which was from 1974 to the time i bought it in 91 , stuff missing was because of the infamous pooter update or something . This meant 8 years were completely unknown .
Any way after a bit of digging about I HAZ FOUND STUFF OUT
I now know the name of the very first owner , the town it was bought in , the actual date it was purchased ( different from the registration date ) and the Garage
that sold it new .
Theres a proper letter on its way and although it cost £12 im well chuffed .
Ive done a map with where its lived , deleted all the addresses etc on this version for privacy,s sake
More to follow

Re: Nods news. I haz new news > more plastic fantastic
Some of you may know ive been merrily chopping up Lin bins ,
The final bit was to make something to stuff loose change into , i find it mega annoying rummaging around for parking money and the ashtray has other stuff in it .
So i did this ----

Re: Nods news. I haz new news + Lin bin choppage
Nice work yet again Dave!
At first I thought you were going to say you've started a full back to bare metal restoration of the Vusky!
I've got all the history for LNK but didn't think to map it, a job for later methinks
Vusky won't be needing it but good luck with the MoT test anyway.

If I told you I was a pathological liar, would you believe me?
