Re: Nods news , Things do change
With the Vusky still very dead ive spent a bit of time sorting something that has annoyed me on the Singer .
One is the missing two tangs for the centre boot trim , i use brass nuts and bolts fitted to these tangs now but with two gone the board was starting to warp .
Anyway ive made and fitted two new tangs and fitted the bolts and nuts like the other three.
Second is the board warping slightly so ive fitted some edging on the vertical sides as this too was warping , basically a bit of thin stainless folded in half and pushed on the edge .

Re: Nods news , Done a bit in the boot .
When you want 13 inch offset mounted Trico speed blade wiper blades and they cost £50 a pair - chop up some 14 inch which cost half - or even half again as with this pair

Re: Nods news , Singer in print ( well kind off )
Done via iphoto on the mac , cost just under £40 posted in hardback , you can have paperback which is cheaper and theres lots of page laypout options.
Given that i used to work at a printers i consider this to be cheap considering the work involved .
Takes about week to arrive once they have the info .

Re: Nods news , Singer in print ( well kind off )
Anyway to get this back on track .
Singers booked in for its MOT on Saturday - the last one it officially needs - its not failed since 1989 but has had advisories .
I recon it will be fine but will give it a glance over first

Re: Nods news , Singer in print ( well kind off )
Well it passed its final legally required MOT , Rear brakes are slightly uneven but il look at that at some point plus front N/S wheel bearing has slight play and its usual factory fitted oil leak .
We stuck it on the emissions tested and its perfect , tickover is real smooth how its set and revving to 4000 RPM gave a C0 of 4% , machines still showing red though as its set for a modern engine .

Re: Nods news , emissions comparison with the Vusky
Well things went all to pot today .
Planned on taking the Singer down the coast for fish and chips ( for me not the car )
Didnt make it there and nearly never made it home . Id done around 15 miles and the engine spluttered twice , pulled in and stupidly turned it off - the result being it wouldnt restart , Well it did eventually after a fight and I decided it best to just head home - miss fired and spluttered now and again but kept moving --- that is until i came four cars length from a busy crossroads where it died , this time it refused point blank to start - i checked for fuel ( OK ) , Spark ( OK ) but it was having none of it - eventually the battery started to die but not before the starter motor smelt rather hot .
Some time later a kind person stopped and offered help , we pushed it across the cross roads and down the slight hill on tother side whereby bump starting it got it going .
Managed another 7 miles before it did it again although this time it did fire up eventually , it did this twice more on the way home but eventually i made it back.
Checked the fuel pump ( working fine ) , checked the needle valves and for fuel in the float chambers ( both fine ) , then i swapped the dizzy for a spare i had with known working points , condenser etc ,( it ran ) , swapped the coil ( it ran - i turned it off then it wouldnt restart ) , swapped the coil back ( it ran and restarted OK )
Went for a 20 mile drive , power was well down but it ran OK ish - stopped for fuel whereby it wasnt keen on starting but much better than before .
Drove 20 miles home and after a bit of testing found the centrifugal advance on the spare dizzy partially seized so fitted new ( old stock genuine ) points , condenser , rotor arm to the original dizzy and refitted it.
Power back as it was and touch wood after 15 more miles plus a few turning it off and restarting it seems OK .
I can therefor only conclude that the Pertronics electronic ignition has failed
I did get a nice sunset pic on the final test run though - the only good thing from the whole sorry episode

Tickovers nice and steady so its all very promising . Im now convinced it was the Pertronics that caused yesterdays baffoonery - long live points and condenser.

Steering column centralised on the Singer at long last , meant to do this ages ago but just never got around to it
Used it all week for work and so far its been fine , no grinding to an abrupt stop

Re: Nods news , Its all good again.
It sometimes baffles me how one job can lead to another and another ad infinitum .
This morning i remembered that although id done the king pin zip tie seal trick on the Vusky id not done it on the Singer.
Heres the shortened version of events .
Drivers side- fit zip tie = fine
Cause = Passenger side = seal all stretched and not good .
Effect = remove kingpin to fit new seal
Cause = carrier base very worn / pitted with two PTFE washers and a shim fitted , pin corroded
Effect = fit that new carrier I found yesterday
Cause = trackings now out
Effect = As the tracking needs doing anyway il fit the Fiesta / stainless rods that are in the loft .
Cause = whilst im here il check the brakes .
Effect = drivers side OK but shoes low - fit new shoes on drivers side .
Effect = go to fit new shoes on passenger side
Cause = wheel cylinder leaking
Effect = Change both cylinders and shoes on passenger side
End result = Brakes feel shite as the shoes arnt bedded in plus Steerings twitchy because the trackings out
THE END

You still need the seal fitted , zip tie goes over the top , stops it coming out , expanding etcJohn Simister wrote:What a brilliant idea. I never thought of that, and niggling in the back of my mind has been the need to dismantle my Stiletto's N/S kingpin assembly to replace the currently non-existent seal. Now there's no need, unless the Law of Cause and Effect reveals that the assembly is now ruined through the lack of a seal and needs to be overhauled anyway.Dave ' Linwood ' Lane wrote:This morning i remembered that although id done the king pin zip tie seal trick on the Vusky id not done it on the Singer.

Ah, I was hoping the zip tie might itself act as a seal. It's got to be better than no seal at all, even if it's not quite proper.

Tracking done - apparently you track the NSR to the NSF and OSR to the OSF
We will see what it feels like on the way home - I was 5mm out with my guess

Looks good, but it's surprising what's behind when you go digging isn't it, you wouldnt have though a couple of bubbles meant it was like that behind, Are you injecting any anti corrosion behind it or leaving it? At least you've got a new wing in stock

Re: Nods news , trouble brewing - trouble sorted .
Testing this new upgraded non electronic ignition system on my Singer for someone which still uses points ( I have upgraded ones of these to fit but want to see how NOS Lucas ones cope first ) , Special 12V - 45,000V secondary ignition coil which is ballast controlled to 9V ( 45,000V is a bit high for points but these of course are only on 9V now ) , External condenser so none in the dizzy .
Added to which ive fitted my made up LT lead .
Results are VERY promising - spec , where it came from , long term results will follow eventually .
