Yes the black frame detail looks 'right'.

Just need to make sure everyone closes the door by holding the handle .... rings on fingers and closing doors using the window frame does my head in ..wrong on so many levels. My wife still needs a "Handle!" prompt most of the time.

Have you noticed TV stars in borrowed classic cars ALWAYS close the door using the window frame!

Well the window frames on the doors were shot paint wise , peeled of my black tape and some paint came off , there was also a bit of rust , mainly in the curved top .

So ive dived in , ripped all the paint off and etch primed it .

Im going black as a trial , ive no foam grey paint anyway so ive little choice .

Anyway we will see once and for all what it looks like once its done .

In the mean time passenger door rear glass runner is very shot :(

Go for it Dave! Even though I'm a little biased
I sprayed the door frames and the B-pillars satin black a few years ago and I think it looks good as it matches the side window rubbers.

Definitely needs the chrome 1/4 light frame to be black as well.

Both door frames are now painted black.

As a trial ive done the quaterlight chrome black as well , its done in some special 3M tape , very thin and is folded and held in place both by the rubber seal and the glass channel , therefor removable with any damage to the chrome - although the passenger side chrome is bad anyway

One sides done , not convinced about the black quaterlight upright - might be a step too far , still as its just tape its easily reversed .

However really pleased with the rest

Yes it does need to be left chrome I think too, it's rather a lot of black there now. Especially with the black roll cage behind it as well.

No, no, no..... They look great with the polished rims. All black would be just WRONG. :(

You'll be blacking the door handles, bonnet hinges and headlight reflectors next ! 😊

Every Imp I have owned or restored (except for one particularly rare one) I have done the the tops of the door frames, and the B post in satin black. They should have been done that way from the factory in my opinion.

Not done much today but i have wired in an interior light on / off switch and mounted it near the dash .

It turns off the main interior light , both floor lights and the boot light .

Seemed a good idea seeing as in the summer interior lights / boot lights are not needed anyway plus i can leave a door open without the light being on all the time , boot light has its own switches anyway but killing the positive supply seemed easy as i was doing the others anyway , all these lights run off one 3A fuse :)

Theres nout like making work for yourself to pass the time .
Yesterday i rewired the internal and boot lights with a dash mounted on / off switch .
Anyway my switch panel has three holes evenly spaced ----- and I now need four

As a bodge to aid wiring i drilled an extra hole in it but obviously that looked shit so had to be sorted .

Switch panel is from a 50s Hillman of some kind and it fits in well so this morning after much butchery i altered its front using an old interior door trim backing . I liked the dimple pressing in it so decided to keep it in .

Pics tell the story better than me

Re: Nods news , bottom engine lid buffers

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

Factory ones are all a bit vague especially the bottom ones not to mention they look a tad rubbish .
Anyway I had some rubber feet of an old guillotine that were an identical fit slot wise as the old one .
These i popped in but they were a tad fat - easy solution as i just cut a slot in each one for the engine lid edge .
Also added some thin stainless on the lid - no more fooked paintwork :D
Lid closes just as well as before :D

Anyone on here at all
Of course theres one other area that gets a right pasting paint wise - the engine lid catch plates on the rear panel so nout for it but make some covers , crimped and bonded on it doesnt move at all , one down - one to go

Fitted a digital temp gauge and used it as an oil temp gauge just to see what happens .
Modified my oil pressure gauge take off for the sensor which is surrounded by silicon vacuum hose so isolated from the metal completely .
Ive been over to my parents to cut the hedge so naturally took the Singer on an extended run out ( self isolated in my own car ) .

Having checked my random records the stat fitted is a 72˚C one .

Anyway the oil temp ( assuming its correct gauge wise ) reads between 68˚C and 72˚C .

Top of rad was 72˚C - bottom of rad was 34˚C.

So it seems the oil temp mirrors the water temperature which mirrors the stat rating ( assuming whats stamped on it is correct.)

Re: Nods news , Oil temp gauge trial

Post by The Nun »

Doesn't the temp gauge sensor normally go in the sump rather than the hotter parts towards the top of the engine? then you're getting the temperature of the bulk oil before it goes through the pump under pressure heating it up?
I suppose its debatable do you get the temperature before it's drawn into the galleries or at the head after it's been right through the engine?
I would have though the sump would be better then you have the temperature before it's pumped into the engine?
Is an oil temp gauge used to see what the max temp of the oil is or how effectively is been cooled once its back in the sump ready to go around again?
