Re: Nods news, Experimenting again
Imp throttle pedal modding / butchery / possibly / probably fecking up has begun .
The original pedal pivot idea is shite beyond believe and this ones royally borked .
Ive found some perfect fitting top hat oilite bushes the correct size internally and externally and have worked out a way to mount them - cable end is easy but the spring end less so .
As its all a bit trial and error ive threaded the pedal so it will come apart as i develop the idea - final one will most likely be welded although bush change will be a no go in both cases at the pedal end without welding one way or other ( maybe ) , threaded like this you could at least change the cable end one plus alter the pedal angle although i can see no advantage with that.
Its all in the development stage at this point anyway and nothings finalised .

Re: Nods news, Experimenting again - throttle pedal pivots
I agree it's a bad design from start and yours is a much better one.
However, I don't think anyone at Rootes ever imagined that their "low end" car would be alive some 50+ years after its' introduction.
Then again - if someone actually thought so - I'm sure that bean counting engineers (Chrysler people?) would have changed the design to what it is.

Re: Nods news, Experimenting again - throttle pedal pivots
Also this was not the original design but a bodge to address the issues with the pneumatic throttle. perhaps they had a limited time to design and get them into production and then never had any reason to revisit.

Imp throttle pedal modding / butchery / possibly / probably fecking up continued.
bush mounts made and fitted - new mount made for the pedal end and spring locates as before but i need to weld on the spring stop at the other end - clamped to a bench its as smooth as a cashmere codpiece with zero play
Flat side on the cable end is to allow the mounting nut to fit easier.
Holes in the mounts are for oil adding .

Re: Nods news, Experimenting again - throttle pedal pivots
Do you have anything in the joint sleeve to stop the shafts rotating out of sync if the nuts were to become loose, say like the ends of the bars are flattened and fit into a slot in the sleeve so if the nuts became slack the pedal wouldnt go to the floor and youd have no accelerator?
I see what youve done its like a trackrod adjuster sleeve to connect the shafts? but in this case it has to resist twist not push/pull.

Dave
You might find when bolted straight to the floor with the extra width bearings at each end that misalignment in floor would mean that shaft might become tight on bearings, only way round that is to bolt a truly flat plate to floor and pedal frame to that.
I did look at this a couple of weeks back but didn't give too much thought as that's the problem l could see with the idea.
I could be wrong of course.

Re: Nods news, Experimenting again - throttle pedal pivots
Imp throttle pedal modding / butchery / possibly / probably fecking up finished.
Welded on the other spring catch part today and gave it a coat of etch primer - also welded up the wear grooves and the worn foot plate .
Changed the larger nuts for the all steel locking ones used on donut bolts which locked the lot solid .
just need to fit it to one or tother car now to see if it actually works .
no idea when but hopefully the weekend

Re: Nods news, Experimenting again - throttle pedal pivots
Ive recently just checked and repainted my accelerator pedal and although yes its a bit basic and Heath Robinson in design it didnt have any wear on it at all so back on it went, I dont personally like the throttle pedal to be too light to operate as I find with my size 12s on when the car goes over a bump you find youre operating the pedal unintentionally?

Re: Nods news, Experimenting again - throttle pedal pivots
Just videoed the reason ive been playing wiv throttle pedals .
This clunking is driving me nuts .
This is on the Vusky - Singer is worst than this
it looks like the mounting nut is loose - its not - its the floor flexing
might have to do something about that .
VID no longer available because of photobucket

Ah I see what you mean, I'll have to see how mine is, not noticed it so far, maybe a piece of nylon/rubber strip of the appropriated thickness positioned between the floor and shaft so its a snug fit to take up any play might help?

Imp throttle pedal modding / butchery / possibly / probably fecking up fitted.
And what a difference it makes too . nice and smooth .
the clunk you hear is just the pedal stop ( cable end ) hitting the floor , a small bit of rubber should stop this
Rubbing noise is the inner cable as the pedal is silent - il do my Shimano cable mod to this to finish it off - then do another pedal for the Singer
I could alter the pedal angle if i wanted but kept it as it was - im positive the double locking nuts and lock washers will prevent the joiner coming loose - its not under that much stain really
Bushes are for a Briggs and Stratton something or other

Your wrong and my worries were unfounded - its perfectly fine making the bush holders on a lathe and getting the hole and end faces perfectly true are the key to thisBobbycham wrote:Dave

That's excellent Dave.
When will they be in production, available through club spares???
Always good to see any improvements for an Imp.
Cheers

Why was the prop deal a fiasco, Dave ? I've yet to experience a problem with the stuff I've produced. Perhaps with the exception of a slight over production on one item. Even that I can re advertise in the future.

Regarding the throttle mod.
Since you have already done it and have the knowledge in your head. Save me the venture into a cold dark garage and the front footwell with my vernier caliper. Please tell me whats the OD of the rod you fitted the bearings to in mIllimeters ?
Id be ever so grateful. Ta!

Singers pedal is currently in this state - its the old clunky one that was in the Vusky

I was actually looking for an equivalent needle bearing. I figured fitting them packed with grease would last longer than I would be breathing. Don't suppose putting it on here would do any harm though :/

I dare say if that's the case then individual ones could vary. So no real point to getting that accurate.
Much appreciated for your reply though. Thanks again.

Dave. I wasn't thinking you were referring to the hatch stays. I was enquiring as to what problems you had with the window prop. I was (am) perfectly happy with mine. Sorry if I confused things.

Singers pedal finished and fitted today.
Im also in the process of altering the throttle quadrant at the carb end for a faster response - not by much as its an experiment as usual

Good luck with that one, Dave. A "faster" quadrant is likely to take away some of the fine tuning available to your right foot.

Re: Nods news, Oilite Throttle pedal pivots - its fitted !!!
Altered the pulling angle of the Singers throttle quadrant today at work as i was fairly convinced i wasnt getting full throttle mainly due to Frank Schoenbergers zorst manifold primary pipes being in a different place to the Janspeed one ( NOT his fault ) and the quadrant was hitting a pipe just before WOT was achieved .
Its an old Solex one , this is the normal thing to use on these conversion inlets .I initially altered this when i fitted the SUs , anyway ive altered the angle a further 3mm and that was enough.
Had some red paint at work to use up so guess what colour i sprayed it
Full throttle is back , its not altered the speed of response however the oilite pedal combined with the Shimano outer and stainless inner has made it super smooth and clunk free -
Andy G its still perfectly set up for normal driving and i dont have launch mode

Just the Shimano throttle cable mod to do on the Vusky between now and the holidays and thats it for this year .
doubt there will be pics as its just a repeat of the Singers so posting the same thing but with a more manky floor visible is pointless.

A quick check of the Vuskys plug colour tells me the twin SUs are still spot on after a years motoring - unless someone tells me otherwise.
All four are identical and its running rather well i must say.

Looks right.
Why not make them look even better for Christmas ..put a set of Denso Iridium IW22's on the Santa list? You'll have fewer miss-fires during idle which might clean-up your screw thread landing a tad.

Yep. I concur with L.e.C , I've also been using iridium plugs for years now, and also in the wife's ZR160 and my ZS180. Instant clean firing.

Re: Nods news, Singer giving me s***
CAUSE , SOLUTION AND EFFECT .
Sometimes changing just one thing causes a whole new world of pain and this is one such case.
CAUSE , Fit Frank Schoenbergers zorst manifold ( NOUT wrong with it - just my set up )
EFFECT , Centre Primaries are fatter and in a different place than before which upset the Solex derived throttle quadrant which meant full throttle could no longer be obtained on my previously very happy twin SUs
SOLUTION , Re angle the quadrant ( painted red )
EFFECT, , Full throttle was back but throttle return wasnt as good as before and occasionally stuck open at 1500RPM .
CAUSE , Third return spring wasnt pulling it shut as before due to the new angle of the butterfly valves link bar caused by the altered Solex bit
SOLUTION , after much head scratching it was the springs angle that was wrong not the tension
SOLUTION , Make a new bracket to alter the spring return angle.
EFFECT , Throttle now returns better than before - however pedal is a tad stiffer than id like
SOLUTION , Feck only knows as ive absolutely given up.

Re: Nods news, Cause , effect and solution ( Singer )
You'll soon get used to the difference, its quite amazing how one adapts to the car, that's why sometimes you don't know any difference until you try someone else's then notice how much better, or worse yours is, of course if you have two IMPs that's where you notice it more going from one tut other all the time, better sell one?

Re: Nods news, Cause , effect and solution ( Singer )
Had a bit of a play tonight - ive got the pedal pressure / spring return setting spot on by the unorthodox use of a small key ring and its driving nice again .
Tickover seems to settle quickly and steadily again on the limited 10 mile drive ive done tonight .
Slight downer is the front carb is getting rather worn spindle wise although as yet its not causing any real issues i can detect - these carbs are a pair i cobbled together from various sets of S/H ones i was donated / bought for pennies etc , i think a full rebuild kit is finally in order after 10 years hooning about

Re: Nods news, Cause , effect and solution ( Singer )
The Singer is dead for the time being - lots of wear on the linkages - spindles are a bit worn so time for a carb overhaul - they were made up out of bits 10 years ago so i cant complain - no idea when it will live again but soonish i hope - maybe a few weeks

Re: Nods news, Singers off the road for a carb overhaul
I have a pair of Strombergs that you could borrow and use on the Singer, if you wish, Dave. Just 'cos it's you.

Re: Nods news, Singers off the road for a carb overhaul
As the Singers currently in bits thought id have a play at work during my lunch hour.
I was not 100% happy with the throttle response on the Singer - twas just a tad too quick compared to the Vusky so today i knocked up this variable throttle quadrant .
Original length was 40mm so ive covered all eventualities and made this adjustable from 34mm to 45mm
Needs finishing but you get the idea .
Also shortened a spare solex link just in case I need it so .

Re: Nods news, Adjustable throttle response
Sounds technical, you can now fit one of those VVT badges on the back, Veritable Variable Throttle.

Re: Nods news, Adjustable throttle response
Looks like the Singers throttle spindles are a bit worn - spindles and bushes on there way from two different places - I wont know if it needs bushes until i get the spindles

Re: Nods news, Adjustable throttle response
I finally believe ive nailed this
New spindles and butterfly valves are now fitted on the carbs and they are all back on and working although I can say it took a lot of head scratching to get cable response set up .
Full throttle is no problem now .
I tried various positions on my adjustable throttle response and can say the following ----
Standard Imp throttle response is about 45mm - almost the maximum it will go , this feels lovely to drive - smooth and relaxing.
Set to 34mm - its shortest setting is akin to warp drive - not much good for normal driving however on a track day this would be wicked , response is rapid and instant in a " f*** me " kind of way , its a shame pulling away slowly is so difficult as it would be superb otherwise .
Adjustment is a 2 minute job involving an 8mm spanner , once adjusted this alters the cable and makes its slacker or tighter depending on which way you go , this is easy to sort as ive got a cycle brake adjuster on the outer - this takes only a few seconds to sort .
Ive also reverted back to the original third spring position but did it with adjustment in mind by butchering a 4mm stainless turnbuckle and making a stainless eye bolt for one end , both choke and third throttle return spring are anchored on this , ive set this spring almost on its minimum tension .
Choke works 1000 times better - enough but not too much .
I ve not been far but i can say its all rather promising .
And all because the Stainless zorst manifold primaries were fatter and in a slightly different place

Cheers Mike - i cant really tell from inside so il take your word for it .Kinger wrote:Sounded great when you left Haynes this morning

Yesterdays trip out to Haynes breakfast club has convinced me the third return spring isnt really needed and makes the pedal just a tad stiffer than i really like .
So thats gone , i also made a new quadrant a slightly different angle to the one that was fitted - around 8˚ more - it just gives me a bit more clearance at the cable end and gets it further from the fat zorst primaries .
Results are astoundingly fantastic , pedal is maga light now and probably too light for some - however having tried the triple spring set up I prefer it like this .
Full throttle is still there and tickover drop is good and constant .
Some milage is needed to make sure all is good but the saga of the SU throttle quadrant / zorst manifold interface / NO FECKIN ROOM WHATSOEVER is solved .
