But why ? Black wheels lose all detail. They might just as well be standard rims if that's a look that appeals. :?

Not keen myself on the all black look for a wheel, lots of moderns alloys are like that and to me they look like steel wheels that have lost their trims, you lose the sculptural detail too, plus you dont know if its black paint or just plain filth from brake pads by owners who cant be bothered to clean them, anything but black i reckon.

Re: Nods news. Gloat time for Stromberg lovers

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

Update time although its all old news to those on facebook .
SHOCK News 24 report
I had SU carb problems  :o
I lost fast idle on the rear carb so when you used the choke it erm--- choked itself to death .
After a bit of diagnostics it turned out to be wear in the fast idle cam on the rear carb , bad wear in fact which prevented the fast idle adjustment screw from doing anything no matter where i screwed the thing.
Luckily ive a few dead and dying HS2s lying about the place including a matched pair from a Spitfire , I split these down and robbed both fast idle cams and fitted them to my set .
Took a few hours to do / refit and set them back up again but now they are perfect once again , idle is dead smooth and fast idle and choke works well , none of this operation effects the jet settings or mixture so it ran perfect as before .
Knackered cam is on the left

No gloating here either, Noddy. Glad you got it sorted out.

As Andy says, it looks like the fast idle cam issue may have been caused by excessive wear due to insufficient lubrication. Perhaps SU assumed that all British car engines would develop oil leaks shortly after being built, so no lubrication to the fast idle cams was necessary. :P If so, then what you need is a minor oil leak. :D

I ran the Taith Cymru Scenic tour for pre '85 cars back in march with 60 entries and nearly 50% were MG's etc.
Of that 50% two a Midget and a MGB didn't make the start due to SU troubles. So like Strombergs they are failible!

By the by the entrant in the Midget ask if he could come in his modern car to which I said yes in the circumstances so he turned up in a Bentley Convertable! Rather big for some of the Welsh roads we used
At this bridge he had to fold mirrors in and wife guided him over!

Nothings perfect , they do wear out and can be a right pig to set up on a car thats not supposed to have them , its usually simple problems if they dont have worn spindles ( the SUs weak link ) though and often fixable by the road .
Burlen do spindles and the bushes for said so even worn to nothing they can be fixed

Re: Nods news.New holder for expansion bottle

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

So then a bit of playing / pratting about .
Whilst sorting out the SUs I noticed my expansion bottle wobbled about whilst on tickover.
Ive never been really happy with the way I fitted it , fiddling about with the small nut and bolt clamp just wasnt up to my usual fussy standard .
What was needed was some kind of custom made stainless steel jubilee clip but wider plus a small rubber foot on the bottom for anti wobbliness .
Heres what i came up with eventually , first pic is the original set up , the other is the new one :D

Re: Nods news. Newness washer bottle .

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

Well ive not done much car wise but I have changed the screen washer bottle , ive had a Rootes special accessory bottle fitted for decades but the lid has always leaked and wouldnt tighten up . You can see the blue stains from the leakage
Anyway I managed to get an earlier version , this has blue writing and a smaller lid which actually tightens up tight and doesnt leak , the brass inlet one way valve fitted in the lid had an outlet hole of less than 2mm which wasnt much good for my uber powerful pump so i had to take this to pieces and fit a wider outlet , I used a bit of copper brake pipe and soldered it in flaring the end so the plastic pipe wont pull off .
Just in case you were wondering the Valve rotates 360˚ in the lid so you can fill it up :D
First pic is the old bottle , the rest is the newness set up :D

About a year and a half ago the electronic ignition borked itself on the Vusky ( expensive pertonics unit ).
Anyway i just went back to points and condenser .
Fast forward to today and the poor Vusky wasnt running as well as normal , well it ran fine but wouldnt rev to the normal 6000rpm plus it gets ragged to .
A bit of checking today revealed the points gap was down to 2 thou :o  .
That would be it then.
Set back to 15 thou and its back to normal but BETTER :)

So then --- leaky transaxle
Singers N/S driveshaft seal leaks and always has a bit , i tried a new seal but that didnt work but did notice the driveshaft spider was worn where the seal touches.
Finally found a NOS one on ebay and stuck it in just now .
Heres hoping.
Im planning on taking the worn one into work and using our all singing all dancing surface grinder that turns rusty bits of bar into mirrors and see if i can reclaim the old one.
Soz ive no pic of the new one out of its protective coating -- I forgot
First pic iz leakage , then newness , newness fitted and finally old scored input

Thats what i meant the quill up the input shaft and out the end cover, standard on later cars but you had to mod an old box to fit one as you needed the end cover and modified input shaft, nothing else, in fact i dont think there is anything else?

Post by Impecunious »

Dave,

Are you sure the oil leak is coming from the actual seal? The shaft you replaced with the new Feebay one does not have enough of a groove to be the sole cause of a seal leak, although I note you said the removed seal was fubared. The dimensions you quote for the replacement seal give a bigger o/d and a smaller i/d, so the grip on the shaft will be slightly tighter than an original seal. You have a late mk. 3 transaxle fitted btw.

I would look closely at the casing join line between the gearbox and the bellhousing and around the outer sleeve junction. After that I would investigate the O ring between the screwed sleeve inner and outer. This means unscrewing the inner completely and therefore resetting the backlash after examining/replacing the O ring. A casing leak means transaxle out I'm afraid.

The final scenario is that the seal is too far in to the inner sleeve, and suspension and/or drivetrain movement is allowing the spider to come out of the box just far enough on left hand bends for the shoulder of the spider to clear the seal lip.

So then.
Ive redesigned Cosmic window stay , It uses the original lock and is designed so you cant remove it with said lock locked ,Even unlocked you need to press the lock or it wont come out . Also made a holder for it when not in use and used some of that Lin bin plastic again especially for Frank Schoenberger for said holder.
Quite chuffed with it all in all

That looks fantastic! Thought about making my own replica of the original but I was very lucky to find an original cosmic up for sale.
I would have never thought of making it out of a flat plate like you have done, with the added 'burst' security.
Well done.

I say that's a Dave Lane window prop mate! Cosmic only made the wire job. You've entered a whole new realm of window props now. (or opened up a new window into prop manufacture!)

Was that made on company time, btw?! ;)

I'd have one in mild, if need be. I'd probably get it galvanised with a load of other items.

Even if you posted a drawing, Noddy, so we could make copies, that would be very helpful. :) It'd be quite nice to make my own rear window prop.

Nods news.window prop to be available in stainless soon

Post by Dave ' Linwood ' Lane »

Im initially looking at having 20 props water cut in 3mm stainless and no more , Ive then got to fit the pin and finish them off .
Will post up a prototype one as soon as i have this sorted , probably in a week or so .
Price should be no more than £30 each and quite possibly less depending on the cost of the cutting and the stainless however ive no plastic left to make the holder so thats over to you im afraid .
Is that OK ?

Prototype stainless window prop , water cut in 3mm 340 grade with stainless hook screwed in , im going to braze these on the inside so they cant come loose , If you wish i could fit the hook using a stainless nut visible on the top instead of cutting it level at no extra cost , it will still be braised .
Price will be £18 each plus postage as i got a deal via some slightly shop soiled stainless they had ,
Stainless will polish up and the odd scratch ( the shop soiled bit ) can be removed but as yet ive not done it on this one .
Can be locked in with the key as you would do with the rear window for security at car shows etc .
Finish will be up to you i guess , polish , paint , whatever .
Ive only built this one ATM so a bit of time is required for those who pre ordered one , :)

Dave, another option on the pin retaining is to peen the end and rivet a head on for the period touch.

Nice work

Re: Nods news. I R in SHOCK !!

So then this weekend just gone was mostly spent at Bristol classic car show . Only planned to go on the Saturday where i spent an age rummaging through the jumble scavenging for bits like a starving Hyena .
Had to go back on Sunday though as by some miracle I - no actually the Singer won a trophy .
It got " The most interesting car in the classic car park " on Saturday .
So Sunday i had to return for a trophy , already given a rosette on Saturday so double bonus .
Truly stunned given the 250 plus cars there and the sheer variety and quality of many of them .
I R STUNNED .
Pics were taken by some pro and these are going in a mag or disposable paper like CCW , can i remember which one she said -- NOPE , I was still in shock TBH .
