Roary wears a ribbon

Post by HARTWELL MK1 »

Well a year has passed and a lot of things have happened in my life including getting remarried and a lots been done on the house and nothing on ruben   . However roarys done a 1000 miles. He's been behaving himself although I have found some bits that need welding  on this scuttle edge behind the bonnet so it time for another rebuild, I guess his turn will be behind Rubens and I suppose I could run the 1150 with its twin 40's on a pneumatic throttle. And that will save me a job on Rubén engine.

Well hers some pictures of roarys camshaft, Any ideas on the cam, there is no marking on the end!

And Another one of roary looking smart with a ribbon

And with 3 other imps !

The kitchens is finished and the house is for sale, so I might get some jobs done on the imp soon! I keep lifting the cover, saying hello and finding and making parts for him

Hi, you mention JWD998L. I am the original owner of this registration, a 1972 Sunbeam Imp Sport in Tango metallic. I notice that this number is still registered to this vehicle and would love to know what happened to it or anything about it's history.
Many thanks

Thanks, that would be great. I called myself '2imps' because I had two, back in the day. Don't have any now sadly.'

I didn't rebuild those swivels Jeff, i seem to recall they were painted in blue hammerite, something I would never do, they were given to me by someone getting rid of imp parts with the comments are these any good to you, they don't appear to fit mine, but I never did anything with them, I left them on the shelf and then gave them to you with my Sport. 😊 Someone obviously mixed up the parts once they were dismantled, I always keep stripped assemblies in their own box so there's no chance of mated parts not going back with their matched components, old ice cream tubs are great for this.

We have a local aluminium foundry, so with my background in brake development at the old girling site, I decided that Ruben has waited long enough for me to finish off the brakes, so I made a pattern box and got these cast.

Re: Ruben chooses to get aluminium brake calipers

Post by The Nun »

Didn't Mike Dent, Moose, recently develop an alloy caliper kit based on the Viva hub design for the IMP that he's tried and tested? Save you lots of work if ones available now ready to fit straight on?? Though I quite understand if you want to try it for yourself for the challenge 😊
Also how does it or might affect your insurance when you say brake calipers I've made myself, do you have to show official test and cert paperwork for them?

Hi Peter, There are several reasons why I want to develop my brake conversion, the main one being now is that I want a 1960’s looking aluminium caliper, that doesn’t necessitate having to widen the track too much, that preserves the original pedal feel, and does not alter the front rear brake balance.

At the moment, I have found a production 35 mm opposed pot caliper, A stock disc that I can remachine,to fit the imp hub and that leaves some brackets to get laser cut and zinc plated. This new kit will be photo ready and tested in January. I have a car ready to evaluate it on !

I want to make the Best Imp disc conversion.

The D12R caliper was aluminium, pictured above, was used on imps, with pads available from imp specialists at the time, however with a either a 43mm or a 48mm piston size, this caused a front rear brake inbalance. At the moment my prototype is in 2 halves, whilst I get the shape correct. Once this is achieved, the caliper will be cast in one piece, and manufactured from heat treated aluminium, and be interchangeable with the D12R

Pistons and seals will be from another 1965 rear engined classic, that I might have one or 2 off in the workshop.

Regarding liability sign off, I have tested a large number of brake calipers, for strength and durability, and I will test my caliper, and I still have contacts in component test.

Additionaly the D12R does not have a dust boot on the caliper piston, making it unsuitable for a road car At the moment,

However I have found a production 35 mm opposed pot caliper in cast iron weighing 2.1 kg, the aluminium D12R weighs 1.1 kg A stock disc that I can remachine,to fit the imp hub and that leaves some brackets to get laser cut and zinc plated. This new kit will be photo ready and tested in January. I have a car ready to evaluate it on !

After 6 weeks of work, he took his first powered run on the road last Saturday.
Still loads to do, but I can treat him as a rolling restoration now
