BS Nymph in Jersey

Post by edgedj »

Slightly the wrong kind of weather in Jersey at the moment for this but when the sun is out there is no stopping the grinning behind the wheel or as you drive along from people looking (ok staring a lot of the time)

Going to be FAB in summer with your T-shirt off .... and no need to worry about keeping up with moderns given Jersey's low speed limits. :D Clan004

Current job is fixing the leaking heater, weeping from top hose. Got the whole unit out now and begun by ejecting a dead wasp, two spiders nests and the remnants of 50 year old foam.

Just doing my bit for global warming :) Really though the heater does do a lot more than you'd think, even in a Nymph, it keeps your legs warm and clears the screen.

Ultimately the fix was simple, the top union had cracked on the solder joint, so it was a thorough scrub, cleanup with a dremel brass wheel, re-flow with lots of new solder and flux, pressure test on a compressor and re-fit. Whilst it was out it's clear that the original foam baffling that makes air flow through the matrix was totally gone so I've replaced all this too. A very satisfying job, costing about 50p of gas and solder.

My 9 year old daughter and I learning a bit of sewing. Orange car, needs a splash of orange on the seats. Could be overkill but only one way to find out!
Test no. 1 need some orange thread and to be a bit more careful with the centre pleat stitch

Still deciding on a final finish for the centre panel. Think this is the final design, quilted squares over two layers of thin foam scrim.

Seatbelts from https://www.retrobelt.com in the US, really lovely things they are too.

Rear seat back is the first thing to be completed, it's almost more pain fitting it to the frame than all the sewing but I think I like the overall effect. In the final levelling up and fitting I found a Nymph oddity which I'm not sure anyone else has noticed the moulded stops for the seat back are about 20mm ahead on the drivers side than the passenger? This means when you tension the straps on the chrome pegs on the tub the rear seat is pulled out of shape. Easily padded out and not really a surprise with a 70s kit car to find left to right variance!

One front seat done, driver's side to go. This one has the most knackered base, which I'm fixing by fitting Triumph seat rubber diaphragms and widening the imp seat base a bit with riveted on metal strips to take the slightly narrower Triumph ones

Nice one Baz!

This is essentially the difference between the South and the North in summer...a Jersey. :)

It's also why the North is (and the roads are) less-crowded and more pleasant to live in/drive in than the soft/globalised/miserable/overcrowded South.

..still wishing global warming would properly kick-in -then, up here, we'd have it ALL mu-wahaahahahaha! :o   8) i wish.. :| :(

Seat restoration complete. Had to fit new diaphragms to the fronts and resprayed quite a bit of the frames and freed up the runners on the lathe. No more work planned on the nymph now for the summer, just enjoy it now the weather is getting warmer.

Beautiful work, very stylish and inviting.

Can imagine jumping in to the seats and cruising down to St Helier and back. Happy days! Clan004

Yes indeed 8) whipping down St Brelades Bay on the A1 dual carriageway , at a heady 40 mph, enjoying the sunshine. Can't beat it.

Amazing colour match!

I had a drive of a Moke Californian about 25 years ago; I wonder if there would be a similar evocative name that would be appropriate for a Nymph? Perhaps Tenerife in reference to the Fraser race team moving there?
