NFT 44X

Post by Richard Claydon »

Some of you may have seen the recent article on NFT the latest registered Imp known. Colin Valentine had made contact with the owner and I was lucky enough to ge able to buy it.

The car was built using a new 4 headlight sport shell sourced from a dealer in 1975. It was originally built up by an employee of the Clan factory in Washington and the car has quite a few Clan bits on it!! Instruments and the fuel tank are examples! The build stalled and the car was acquired by the guy I bought it from.

He finished the car in 81 and registered it then. Hence the X reg. It was built as a full group 6 rally car but was only used on 1 or 2 events when and encounter with a large rock bent the rear rad like a banana!! The car was retired with a little over 400 miles on and hasn't seen the light of day for nearly 35 years!!

When built nearly everything was sourced new including all the running gear and 998 engine running on twin 40 Webers. It has original period touches everywhere. It's fully strengthened and seam welded including all of the suspension. It has period Spax coil overs with adjustable platforms on the front and Spax on the back. It's riding on original magnesium Minilite wheels. Viva discs up front help it stop.

The car was painted straight over the factory primer but hadn't been keyed so it's falling off in places. The shell, however, is still as new!!

I agreed to buy the car blind and bought it as having a seized engine.

We picked it up yesterday and after a couple of hours fettling with Clark we managed to get it running. It's now had a new battery, starter and genuine grp 6 rear rad. We're fully recommissioning the braking system this week and might even run it down for a test!!

Could be Purple Velvet then they painted the Mk1 Escort 1300E in it, susposed to have been an exculsive Ford colour at the time, real trendy, they only did it in 2 colours i think that and gold?

I think the 'gold' was Roman bronze.

No Roman Bronze was a very dark brown, we had a Cortina Mk 4 in that, a 1977 colour so Mk 2 Escort, the Escort Mk1, 1300E was a more Honey Gold, lighter colour?
