Re: 68 stiletto Restoration (SRC 527F )
I cant find a picture at the moment, but its a flat lap joint, the flange on the outer front wing tucks under the scuttle and is spot welded from underneath along the seam and then is just smear of seam sealer and then painted.
Looks generally as you have there, 45degree joint but needs to be a little neater of course and the overlap seam/join shows its not ground down flush so it disappears.

Hi,
If you look on my thread for The Pest on page 7 you can see the original panel your looking for before I had to repair the tin worm myself in that area.
Doing a cracking job there.
Cheers

The number is a Chrysler dealer parts bin number or shelf number where they kept the bit to help the staff locate the item when someone came in asking for one, instead of saying now where did we put that??

Perhaps I embellished it a tad. They were loose when I collected it in Wiltshire and I had all those problems on my ride home to London, no appropriate spanner to hand. They now behave.

Re: 68 stiletto Restoration (SRC 527F )
This may be of interest. There have been various threads about the low book prices printed for the imp range which did not reflect in any way either the money invested or the true prices restored cars realise. Many cars are sold by word of mouth for substantial amounts and these sales do not reach the price guides. ( see a thread by John Simister) I have just agreed a replacement value for my Stiletto of £10,000 with Peter Best Classic Car insurers . This of course does not mean I could expect to go out and sell my car for that price, but it does acknowledge that to replace a good example of a restored car could involve that kind of money. The car on this thread looks to be that kind of vehicle. It took my five years to find my car..quantify that!

Re: 68 stiletto Restoration (SRC 527F )
Decided to work my way round the front panel. The lower edge was a bit crusty but with the air box in the way I could not tell the condition of the front crosember so removed the lower edge. Was expecting the worst but there was lots of wax and once cleaned off it was as new behind the suspension mount just a bit on the spotwelded edge that you can see cleaned everything ready for paint

Re: 68 stiletto Restoration (SRC 527F )
There was a time around 15, 20 years ago or so to have a fibre glass bib spoiler on the front, apparently does no end for the handling especially in crosswinds, but just looks like an add on and most werent particularly bonded on properly, just pop rivet and filler sort of thing, and get scraped, youre probably better off without one now, for originality sake.

Horn compartment.
You should have twin ones and there should be 4 fixing holes in the rear bottom of the box for them 2 for each horn.

Did you fabricate that crossmember, Gary? I think mine will need work in that area.

When fixing the other side had a problem welding the new seem by the front side lights as it was difficult to plug weld from the inside as I don't have a spot welder, so this side I will make up and weld to corner panel first and then butt weld to front panel

Re: 68 stiletto Restoration (SRC 527F )
Early bonnets and later bonnets had the twin (cross) brace, only for a short period did they try them with just the one diagonal, I think around 1970/71 time? but they quickly reverted back to twin as the bonnets were too flexible without.

Re: 68 stiletto Restoration (SRC 527F )
I guess if you aim for a 1/2 over hang you wont be far out, but as I said you need to try the fit with the seal fitted, plus the flange on the bonnet to which the seal fits onto sometimes varies slightly in width too so that obviously moves the seal a little too.
Once you get the spit bracing out of the way you can always jack the front panel out slightly if you need they arent that stiff even with the vertical brace between the airbox and top flange.
