Hillman imp Supersport HHM 572N
Thought I would share details on my 10 year project. Before any one says it they didn't make such a model as a supersport, but I have. I bought this car way back in 2000. I pushed it through an MOT and used it daily for a couple of years. It is an Apricot Super Imp from 1975. The throttle cable snapped on the M8 in 2003 and the RAC van came to collect me but when he reversed back he went right through the front of the imp! I decided to take it off the road and restore it. At the time I had a completely rotten Stilletto on my drive so I decided to combine the two. Luckily the only salvageable bits of the Stiletto body was the front end, so both front wings and twin headlamp panel were used. I then used the engine and running gear from the stiletto along with the engine lid and hub caps to create my hybrid Super Sport! Other parts fitted were, inner and outer cills, both rear corners and both rear arches. I also fitted a fiesta disc brake system. The work was complete by 2004 but life and other projects got in the way so the car stayed in the back of the workshop for 10 years. I pulled it out this year and for the first time since 2004 it fired into life. Next up is an overhaul again of all the mechanicals and an MOT. Once Motd I will strip it back down for a proper re-spray in the original apricot. The car wont be a show winner, this is just going to be my daily hack. I actually prefer how it was originally and kinda wish I hadn't modified it, but I can always revert it back quite easily in the future.

Hi guys. They are out of a fiat coupe. Almost perfect match. Got the full set including rear for £30 about 6 years ago. Looking forward to getting a seat in them. They are flat bottomed so modified easily to fit on original imp runners.

Ahh but they did make a Super Sport ! Well Hartwell did in 1967, i have one , It was a normal sport with a 998 conversion and a bored out inlet manifold with 2 x CD 150 carbs , which Hartwell did before delivery .Shawl wrote:Thought I would share details on my 10 year project. When they converted a Super Imp, did it become a Super Super Sport though?

Re: Hillman imp Supersport HHM 572N
Two months since my last post. The car went off to Winlinton Garage run by a club member. Alan is going to give the car a complete mechanical overhaul and get it through an MOT. Alan has suggested modifying the front H brackets so that the shocks are accessed from inside the bonnet area. I think this is a great idea as my first imp had this. Really looking forward to seeing it again. I'll get some pics up when its back. I have fitted fiesta discs up front. I am going to go for minilite alloys. I feel that the rears sit in too far so was thinking 5 inch wide up front and either 5.5 wide or 6 inch wide at the rear. Has anyone any experience of different widths or could point me to a thread or discussion topic on this? I have used spacers in the past but keen not to use them this time. Any advice welcome. Cheers

Re: Hillman imp Supersport HHM 572N
If you telephone Minilight direct, they will advise you on widths and offsets. About £600 for a set of genuine alloys (not magnesium of course !) from them. I'll be going down this path very soon, as my current alloys are past their best.
