Re: Gilbert: The Green One- Long overdue update

Post by Mark One » Sun Jan 26, 2014 1:13 pm

It's been ages since I posted about Gilbert! So here I am on a very wet Sunday bringing things up to date.

First of all, thank you to everyone who voted for Gilbert in the Rootes category at Perth (Sorry, I know it's a long overdue record of thanks  ). Gilbert got a second place and I was chuffed to bits :D .

Apart from enjoying the car's charms since his flawless trip up to Perth and back, I have been doing a few tidy up type jobs since the onset of winter:

1) A bit of painting: Grey bits and fuel tank (fully cleaned out with 40% phosphoric acid solution- it certainly cleared away all the internal Charlie Romeo Alpha Papa  )

2) Got the bumpers re-chromed. What a difference!

3) Trying to halt a small weep from the off side drive shaft seal. Fitted a new seal yesterday.....hope this one holds.

Some piccies:

Back bumper. Lovely chrome job.
A few other bits and pieces to do, but on the whole we are ready for the start of spring!

It's been ages since I posted about his Greeness.

Not been idle, spending time fettling as you do.

All seems to have paid off and I really need to thank everybody for voting for Gilbert in Darlington last weekend. He got 1st in the Rootes class! And, as a bonus, Gilbert also came third in the most original section. Quite chuffed!

Here are a few photos:

500+ trouble free miles. 46mpg and about half a pint of oil.

I have to agree with all the comments posted elsewhere: An absolutely brilliantly organised National and very, very much enjoyed by the whole crew: Mrs. Mark One and Mark One Junior. Liked the Daleside brews myself .

Totally agree about the seats, Martin. How many Imps have got seats that have been on the Telly? 8)

Re: Gilbert: The Green One- with his new pal, Monte

Post by Mark One » Fri Dec 25, 2015 8:24 pm

I've been meaning to put an update on here for a while. Gilbert's got a stablemate. I've called him Monte and here he is:

This is a 1969 Sunbeam Chamois. Originally imported into France and registered in Monaco as K083 MC in February 1970 to a lady called Mme Somerie. The address was 11 Avenue Princesse Grace and my intention is to some day drive it back down there for a photo outside its old "house". The car was bought from Mme Somerie in c. 1980 by a Scottish gentleman (Mr. Kerr), who still lives in the same apartment block. He ran it daily until the early 90's and told me that one of his favoured wheezes was to park it amongst the "Rollers" at the Casino. Mr Kerr drove it to his family farm in Devon in the 90s and it was there until the previous owner to me bought it in 2012 and registered it as UDV168H. In Feb 2013, I bought the car and drove it up to Cheshire and it has since been going through a thorough and gradual transformation to the vehicle it is today. It was left hand drive, a rather pewky yellow (not original) and had only 50K odd km on the clock. It drove really well and it was delivered to Jeff Day's place in March 2013 where it got stripped to bare metal, converted to RHD, new suspension, new seats, trim, roll cage and respray (along with numerous other tasks that go along with such a job!).

Here is the link from one of Jeff's postings when it arrived at his workshops. Jeff's children christened him "Custard", so his full name is Monte Custard!

Back in January, Monte came home and I have spent time since then getting him ready to roll. More of that later. Here he is being dropped off by Jeff:

Re: Gilbert: The Green One- and Monte "head" for Hatton

Both Gilbert and Monte had a brilliant time at the National at Hatton Country world.

Gilbert, driven down to Hatton with great trepidation by Mrs. Mark One and Monte driven down by my good self had a lovely trouble free journey (only 80 odd miles from Cheshire to Hatton). Gilbert had the easy job of taking us out on Friday to Gaydon, while Monte stepped up with a flawless 100 mile round trip on Saturday to the Cotswolds.

At show and shine, Gilbert did himself proud by displaying with his new Master Class buddies having won his own class last year 8) . Monte, however, took us all completely by surprise and won his class (Chamois) at the first time of asking  . I have to say, I was totally and utterly gobsmacked and felt very humbled that people should place Monte first amongst a very strong line up containing some really excellent examples. I really wish I could personally thank every single person who voted for Monte on Sunday :) .

Here are some photos:

Martin: Great to see you too and have a catch up. Great also that both you and Mrs. Pubcrawler came away with a "gong". That Austin Healy is a fine example 8) .

Jakjak: Thanks for your comments. Very much appreciated :D

I certainly voted for Monte! A wonderful looking car with a truly impressive journey behind it. I remember the interior being particularly smart, would you mind posting some more photos of it here?
