Hello all! bellow is a photo of my car in march 2006! i look at this photo and only wish it still looked this good today!

Image

We picked it up from London in 2006, it was a non starter, not been on the road since the year 2000, we knew it needed a little welding done... (little did we know how much it actually needed! :( )

it came with a complete 875CC Sport engine, with 67924 Miles on the clock, 2 previous owners, nearly everything was completely original.

Below are a few other photos that the previous owner emailed me. Enjoy, more to come soon!

we A-Framed the car to aleds in Aprill 2008, had a cup of tea, and came home. when we arrived home, there was an email... it was from aled... and it contained the following photos!

Hello all :)

So again for about a year, not allot got done! for various reasons and complications! :(

But the things that did get done/intrigued me will be listed bellow :) Enjoy! (All photos from 2011 and early 2012)

First of, I hated the finger Pump used for washing the wind screen, it was poor, and didn't work well at all! so i bought a washer bottle bag with the built in motor.
And put a button in-place of ware the original finger pump was. (I didn't leave it hanging there, i moved it up to ware the original one was)
Image
Switch for the washer bottle pump

Image
New badge compared to old one, bought cheep at 2011 national :)
Image
new badge, Front of the car needs work :(
Image
For some reason the previous owner installed two flasher units ? with a switch shown bellow, when the switch is down, the indicators work, when its up, they don't work...
Image
I do have a tow ball with a plug for a light board, so perhaps it is something to do with that ? if any one has a theory of what its used for/why its there could they please let me know what they think :) ?
Image
Found this cable not connected to the key... no idea what it was for, nothing didn't seem to work when it was unplugged, and nothing did start working when i plugged it back in... but it clearly was meant to be plugged in there, so it put it back together and left it
Image
My nice original dash :)
Image
Dad gave me the keys! ;)
Image
Trying my bike out on the bike rack! i didn't have any front suspension at the time
Image
Some how managed to brake this :(

New one fitted :)
Image
New air filters :)

Bought a better condition one at the national, still waiting to fit! :)

Thanks tom! yeah will do :)
The last two GD's i went to were amazing!
Where does it actually breathe from?
the intake pipe is on the side, its an american type one or an import or something, the rest of it is just the same as the normal ones, they put it on the side so it would draw in less muck and bullets :)

Image

Image
That random-looking indicator switch
thanks for your thoughts, do you think it could be fed more power or something like that when you switch it the other way ? i think that when i plug a light board in, and switch it the other way that it will work! on my dads imp, when he installed the light board plug no the back, he had to buy a more powerful flasher unit because all the indicators were very dim when the light board was plugged in, so maybe the previous owner installed two flasher units? one for when its not using the light board, and two for extra power when it is using the light board ?

Thanks all!

Progress is looking good. :)
It would be worth making sure that the PCD (pitch circle diameter - the diameter of the circle that the wheel bolt holes sit on) of those wheels does match the Imp (which is 4").

Image

To measure it, run a tape measure from the inner edge of one bolt hole to the outer edge of the diagonally opposite hole (that way you're not trying to guess where the middle of the hole is). 100mm is not suitable for the Imp, while 4" - which is 101.6mm - is. Because the difference is quite small, it would be worth 'starting' the measurement at, say 2cm along the tape - the 'hook' at the end of most steel measuring tapes is not accurately lined up with the rest of the tape.

With the front light unit it's because the LH one is fitted to the RH side and vice-versa.

Finally, in my experience it's worth fitting the fuel filter before the fuel pump (having made sure that the fuel pump is nice and clean inside) - grit from the tank can hold the pump valves open, cutting off the fuel supply.

Keep up the good work. :D

I took a file to one of the pins, and got it to light up but it was very dodgy! tested them on dads imp because mine was away for its MOT at the time :P

That is all for now! :)

I have a few questions, i wonder if any one can help me ?
Dose any one know ware i can get some bulbs and bulb holders to fit a Smiths Volt gauge ?
And can any one suggest a suitable silver paint to use to paint the engine, exhaust, and manifold with ?

Thanks all!

Hello all, its been a while since my last update, work is slow... ... but here is the progression so far :D

No rush to get it finished because we are taking dads car to the national :)

Image
Fist coat of primer, it looks allot better in person! this is a bad photo, the red sticker has now been removed because it was flaky and rubbish :(
its slow progress on getting this finished and looking good because little black btis of rust keep falling out the top and landing in the wet pain  -.- but besides that it is a very good boot lid! no bad sings of rust anywhere! i couldn't remove one of the door handle opening bits, this made painting it allot harder! :( :/
Image
Painted the fule cap :)
Image
Painted the little black cover for the lock because before it was a horrible rusty color...
Image
Painted the starter motor black, but stupidly forgot to paint the front face ware the cable connects on to!
Image
also painted this black :)
Image
Matching trailer! ;) (still a work in progress!)
Image
My car, with dads new audi A5!
Image
Gorgeous! ;)

Thats all for now guys :) next post will probably be after the national!

Se you at the national guys :D

Hey all! as soon as i got back from the national the first thing i did was jump streight in the garrage and started working on the stiletto!

i am trying to get it done in time for WWW!

So the main thing i needed to do was to change the rooter flexes, both of them were broken... :(

Changing rooter flexs: You will need:
Image
Lol ;)
Image
Right hand side Crack
Image
Left hand side Crack (Notice how they were put on the wrong way round)
Image
I tried to get it of in one piece! but it didn't happen :(
Image
New ones fitted with brand new locking nuts :) (Thanks dad ;) )
Image
Apparently these are the SUX ones that i have heard are not any good ?

I managed to remove and fit one all by my self! i was so proud ;), but with the 2nd one, i managed to remove it ok, but struggled to get the new one back on :( and by this time i was verry tired! so i left it over night, came back to it this morning, (at 1:30 PM ;) ) to find that the Rooter flex fair had been and done it for me! :D :D :D

THANKS DAD :D <3

So today I decided to try and sort out the overheating problem I have been having! I started by taking out the Rad and water pump.

Image
Found it such a pain in the ass to get out! I was standing on my tip toes in the pit, with a wooden plank in one hand, and the rad in the other, and with the rad pissing water all over me! (god knows ware it was coming as I thought I had already drained it! -.- )
Image
Looking abit shabby...
Image
Defo needs a paint!
Image
Clearly got loads of dirt muc and bullets in it
Image
Electric fan on the back, apparently i should ditch this ?
Image
Pit
Image
Im sure there is somthing missing ?
Image
is it a bad sign that there is rust inside this pipe ? defo need a new one of these...
Image
all of the fins look chipped in one corner ? so i am cleaning up a spare one found in the garage waiting to go on!
Image
Dirty!
Image
Really wanted to clean this all up and paint it silver, but i couldnt get the water pump away from the red bit :/

Really think i need a new camera...

Thats all for now guys :) next step is to clean it all up and get it back in! :) thanks for reading! please feel free to point out any mistakes i have made or things that i should check for / might want to replace

Hello all!

today has been a great day! :D :')

Most imp members tell me to make the car my own, and do what I think best! ect... and I can now look at my imp and say... yeah, that's my car ;)

this may sound all rather silly! but my attitude towards the car has changed massively :) its actually starting to look like how I envisaged it but better!

When i look at it, to me and my close friends, it just has 'DOM' written all over it :D

Not only that, but a few months ago, I never thought I would of been able to do this much work on it my self and make it look this good! i feel so much more confident in my mechanical skills!

anyway enough of me rabbiting on...

Today I :
Finished painting and fitted the behind head light covers
Painted and fitted the top of the air filter box
Took the mettal bonnet of
Took various bits of the metal bonnet
and fitted them to the new fibre glass bonnet
Then placed the fibre glass bonnet in place

Image
Final coat
Image
Painted
Image
Image
Anything missing ?
Image
Metal bonnet
Image
So badly gone the seal didn't even go on!
Image
Fitted these bits to the new bonnet, needs abit of painting!
Image
Looks good! :) didn't get the seal lined up perfectly tho! :(
Image
New Registrations dad bought for me a while ago :)
Image
Rust :/
Image
Rust! :(
Image
Need to clean this up!
Image
Slight change in colour here ;)? i am abit worried that there is to much of a gap here atm... ?

Image

Yeoooo! :D looks so good! so happy with it :D

Image

Hell yeah! :D :D

Im so happy with how it looks now :) cant wait to start work tomorrow :D

Thanks all!

Hello all! more work being done :D :D

Today I :
Removed the drivers door!
Added 2nd coat of primer to new door pockets
Removed bumper
Finished painting and fitted new bolts to cover up the pumper holes

Image
Hello there :D

Image
HEHEHE Poor photo... is there something missing ;) ?
Image
Found it! ;)

I really struggled when taking the door of, the top for bolts came out fine, the bottum for bolts came out fine, but the middle door hinge catch thing was a total pain in the ass

Image
Ended up looking like this (after a good hour of hack sawing and hitting with a hammer... )
Image
and this... grrrr should be easy to make work when it all goes back together tho! :P
Image
this is the whole reason i had to take the door of, it has been chipping away at the paint work -.- need to sand this down and primer it, and then put some spacers in the door so that it no longer dose this to it! :D
Image
Painted
Image
Image
Small touches make a big difference!

Thats all for now :) more to come soon :D

Hello all, finely learnt what OMHO means ;)

In my opinion, i think that the square number plate on the front looks great! and I still plan to mount it that way, I understand that it is the WRONG way round, and that possibly more air flow will be sucked in threw the rear sport lid if I had the square one on the back!

Few examples here

Image
ImageImage

Also today i fitted the door back on the imp after making some aluminium plates to push the door out More.

Image
Image

The door no longer chips the paint work of the side when I open it, al thou it is still not perfect and will probably need another plate, also now the locking mechanism inst working quite right because the door has moved, now it dose not shut/bite aswell as it did before, so will also have to take a look at that!

More work coming soon :)

i dont think the imp is going to make it to WWW tho

Hello all, just a quick one! today i added my tow strap that i bought from JAP FEST 2! for £10!

It is probably just for show! and wont actually be used for towing my imp for, the angle that is is at means that it will probably just twist the metal on the front of the car! I know imps are towed from the two number holes on an a frame but the way this two strap is mounted I just don't think it will be a wise idea ;)

Image
Image
Possibly to much red ? maybe should have bought a black one :( :(

The red isn't the same colour as the grill and head lamp covers, but after time and enough driving it will probably turn a darker colour once it gets dirty ect! ;)

Well Well well im afraid guys we have more shiny things that light up!

i have a feeling that less of you will 'Dislike' these tho!

Changes since last post:
More body work, sanding down and primering
Fitted 2 30CM white led strips underneath the rear seats, then wired them in so that they come on when the doors open
Fitted an alternator, and wired it all up

Image
Getting rid of the Cra* bits! Planning to get this welded up eventually
Image
Planning to get this welded up eventually
Image
Cils sanded down smith and primered
Image
Other side, Sanded down cils and applied primer
Image
And abit of a wash! i think its looking good :D
Image
URRRRG :( fan belts fan belts fan belts... so sick of them! in the last week I have bought 5 fan belts and tried about 10 in total to se if they fit! some of them have been to small, and simply the alternator wont go down low enough for it to fit on, and some of them were just so big that the fan belt rubs against the centre column of the cross bar next to the engine mount, after trying and trying again, I bought and fitted one that was 1135MM, and this seems to be working well, but i had to use a dremmle and a chisels to sand down the centre collum next to the engine mount so that the fan belt dose not rub against it! I cant explain why it has been such a night mare! but I have made about 5 trips to halfords and back to try and get the right size!

but at least now it is working :)

Image
this is the gap between the centre collum and the fan belt after grinding it down
Image
Ooooooo! new LED Strips ;) i wired them in so that they come on when you open the doors!
Image
It isnt as bright at this, it makes more of a cool glow :)
Image
Image

That's all for now guys! more engine bay shots to come, I am going to be doing some more cable management with the new alternator cables and various other bits :)

Let me know what you think!

Hi all

Thanks for all the help Dom has been off to halfords 5 times so far and tried most of what they have in stock either too long or too short he currently has a Halfords HB1137a

I agree the belt does look a bit long can anyone confirm what length he should be looking for please it may be they didnt have that size in stock in Stroud

The belt does not actually touch but there is only about 2/3mm clear

The engine mount seems the right way round (as per baz pic)

The 6 bolts are in place on the cross member

As for the spacers not sure how big are they ? I assume they go between the mount and the engine bracket ? I dont think I have ever noticed them so they may not be there

Is this pic any better?

i changed this engine mount a few months ago, i looked in the garage and found one that looked slightly better than the last one that was on their earlier, so I changed it to the one that is on the car atm, (seen in pic above) but I looked in the garage today and I found a nearly new one! obviously dad i am no good at finding dads hidden spares! ;)

Image
Gave it a touch up silver and black paint, and plan to fit it tomorrow because I ran out of time today!

few pictures of the work I did today

Image
Removed that box, going to clean behind it tomorrow, I also stripped most of the black cable tape that was wrapped round the wiring loom in the engine bay, planning on getting some cable wrapping/sleeving stuff to tidy ALL the cables running along the top of the engine bay in to one, should make it look loads better!
Image
Cablesss :P

Thanks for all your help guys! I will update you on the progress tomorrow :)

Well today me and dad went about Sliding the engine and gear box back, and replacing the engine mount!

I put the car over the pit, and loosened the two bolts at the back of the gear box, and then jacked the engine up and removed the engine mount, we then pushed, and wobbled the engine trying to get it to move back! we ended up using a big heavy metal pole about an inch in dimaiter, and tried to prise/force the engine back by wedging this pole in against the engine and cross member, and then pulling back on it to push the engine back.

it was very hard to tell if the engine moved, but we managed to get the engine mount on and in place with two spacers in-between, one of them was in the photo shown above with the engine mount collapsed on it, and we also fitted another slightly smaller one next to it, we when screwed it all together loosely, and ran the engine in hope that it would vibrate, push back and sink in to place.

there is a small noticeable difference in the gap between the cross member / engine mount and the fan belt, but it inst massive! but none the less it is better, the gear box seemed to be nearly as far back as it would go.

all tightened up and fan belt made taught with 1/2 an inch of play we ran the engine and all seems allot better now! thanks for your help guys :)

Wonder what could be going on here ;) ?

Cable tidying
Image
Nearly finished! hardest bit! this has taken so so long
Image
Speaker box nearly finished! :)
Image
More sanding down and primering :)
Image
New tweeters arrived today!
Image
Trying to be clever with a camera ;)

That's all for now guys, mum took the imp for a drive the other day and its running very well! just a little to rich, need to adjust the crabs abit, but I get confused on which way to turn them to turn them down ? people tell me its anti clockwise ? but is that from standing above them ? or from looking at them from bellow :S ? terry confusing... -_- I think I have turned them up twice once before ? that's from doing it anti clock wise from above the carbs ?

also been having a few problems with reverse, every time I went to put it in reverse gear it made abit of a grinding sound but it did go in to gear!?
went to do it again this morning and it seemed to have stop making the grinding noise! so will keep an eye on that

Thanks guys :)

Leumas wrote:Dom, where are you going to put the tweeters? how will you wire them in/connect them up? Just nosey, as I like the idea of a pair myself! Thanks Allan
Here are the photos for you Leumas!

I bought these of eBay for £10, mainly because they also come with a back box to mount the tweets to the car which helps so much!
I am not sure how much you know about tweets, but the make the very high pitch sounds of the song, so it feels like there are speakers ware the tweets are.
For example in my imp I have 4 speakers all behind the front seats, so I bought tweets and mounted them in front of the front seats to make it sound like there are speakers in front of me, and oh my god dose it help! the sound quality is so much better! I really really recommend them! I don't think there is much to look for when buying them, but the more you pay the better quality tweets you get! I bought 150W tweets, again mainly because they came with the back box and because they were all I could afford! to wire them in, all you do is wire them in to the same wires as you did with the speakers. for example, if you have speakers in the front of your car, then you should wire your tweets in to the same cables as you did for the front speakers! other than that I have no idea which would be the best way of wiring them.

so I was thinking ware to mount them! I didn't want to drill in to the doors, door pannals, door pockets, or the dash board!... so ware else was there to fit them?

Wheel arch! :D
Image
Drilled two holes threw the wheel arch, then put some small bolts threw, with a washer and nut
Image
Pushed in and fitting snug!

The sound system in my car is now bliss! even tho I have only spent around £50 on it! I am so over the moon with how good it sounds :D :D

hope this helps!

Good idea Paul, Unfortunately I have already put an auxiliary switch panel there to the right of the steering column....I didn't think through the stereo fitment then...it was awhile ago..That said If I can make up brackets I could mount onde of the units below the switch panel.....

Great pictures there Alan! good luck and make sure you post the photos on my other thread that I posted to you a few days ago so I can se how you fitted it! :)

so not much has changed with the stiletto!
Image
Once again rummaging threw dads spares to find a decent sport exhaust ;)
Image
Painted up :)
Image
and fitted with new D Brackets and exhaust PASTE not putty that had been used previously and found it to be really rubbish... (note that the oil patch on the flour is from dads car and not mine! ;)

Image
noticed this when looking under the car the other day, its looks allot worse than it actually is, in fact it was only one of the pipes on the other side of the water pump leaking from a bad jubilee clip, so found a spare one and replaced it without having to drain the system! win :D not to self... dont use jubilee clip's bought from the 99P shop!

i also found a spare tweet lying around so i wired it in and put it in the rear door pocket, found out that putting tweets in the side pockets (front or rear) works really well and makes a good sround!

That's all for now guys :)

Hello all, so its been a long time since my last post, work has been hard, I have had ups and downs and it has turned out that I no longer have a job :(

anyway! the imp is progressing bit by bit :)

Image
Started of the month with a massive garage sort out! this made dad very happy ;)
Image
Possibly a slight leak from 1 and 2, but not on 3 and 4 ? could just be old oil
Image
is it normal to have that rusty coloured water on the spindle ? (not sure if that's what it is called)
Image
painting a few bits
Image
cleaned up the water pump, after finding a smaller water pump pulley, I fitted it but it grinds against the stud/nut above in this photo, is there anything I can do to change that without removing the whole water pump ? had to put the bigger one on for the time being!
Image
May not look that good, but I spent about an hour straightening the front of the two coils! looks much better than it was!
Image
My new toys for a little side project of mine! ;)
Image
Early Christmas :D
Image
How the car is looking atm! :)
Image
