It's gonna be a cracker! 8)

I see you have galvanised rear trailing arms?

Did you get them done?

If so, how did you protect the bearing and bush housings etc?

I fancy a set of galvanised rear arms myself.

Hi all, basically all finished now, need to touch up the millions of build scratches Ive put on it. Taxed, Moted and Rolling roaded which didnt go to plan, booked again and in the process of stripping and rebuilding my turbo!

Heres some pics next to a clan so others can shake their monitors in excitement

Not sure on the transmission front. I'll be interested to see what others say.

rubbish at the moment,

Due to the turbo oiling everything from the doors back and through all the pipework, the throttle was restricted at 1/3 opening as a circlip was in the way once that was moved out of the way the plenum kept blowing off the carbs under load!!

However the MJ and Edis was faultless and works well, temp gage is a Chinese make believe one which needs to come out probably with every other gauge, oh and fueling was spot on after smaller .9 jets went in

So the action list is.

rebuild turbo
Additional centre strap on plenum
New carb rubbers as Ive melted them
Dirve and prove it
RR again on the 4th July.

Re popping out of gear, happened on mine (2nd gear) recently after new engine fitted, due to gearbox being slightly further forward than before (long story)
Remember that you can compensate by moving the gearstick assembly, which on the (my.....) G15 is fixed by 3 bolts in eliptical mounting holes (ellipses on the assembly not the body).

Mine was already at full adjustment (gearstick assembly as far forward as possible) so I simply drilled new holes in the body(tunnel) about 1cm further forward and refitted in the middle of the adjustment. Works a treat and presumably easier to do on the G15 than the Imp. Might be more tricky if you have to move it backwards though due to the proximity of the handbrake?

Well I tried what I thought I needed to, ie using the correct washers on the engine mount and still not staying in 1st and 3rd unless you keep hold of the gear stick....

Considering that the carpet is now nicely fitted Ill be leaving it like that now till next winter lol, I will however check the slots on the gear assembly cheers Dave good point! I should be able to undo, slide and tighten up without disturbing the interior if I have the slot space left!

First show

Image
Image

Drove well, boosting nicely, felt very fast and much more fun than the imp, love it!! :P :P :P differance with it is, it might not be as overall powerful but in real world on the the road situations is sooooo much quicker, couldnt believe how quick I could overtake people on B roads

Need to tell the RR guy that the timing can go up to 34 degrees-ish as he was concerned and left it on 24 max I think, so currently slightly sluggish through the range.... room to improve anyhow!!

Can anyone recommend I.e Eric and Pete etc lol, what timing I should be aiming for on the MJ?? whats safe on an imp engine say max 7800rpm, as my low blow turbo is out of puff well before 6000 anyhow  , If we start on that rev, I can drop down accordingly on the next set-up attempt.

Cheers
Chris

Not sure if you mean me or Pete R, but anyway here is some food for thought, although mine is obviously n/a and I take it you are saying that above 6000 rpm yours is effectively n/a 'cos the turbo has run out of puff? Eric is obviously you man for the turbo ign advance stuff.

I tried increasing the WOT advance above 6000 rpm to see if my engine liked it. On the log I noted a slight drop off of the rpm acceleration above the point the extra advance kicked in .. (see below):
Pink = ign; Blue TPS%; Yellow = rpm
Image

So I removed the step in the advance curve @ 100% TPS above 4500 rpm and it was better without the increasing advance. (see below)
Image

Here is an old ign map showing a step from 34 @ 4000 rpm to 35 at 6000 and skywards. I'm currently on 35 @ 4500 and no increase above that when using WOT. As you can see, part-throttle is a different story with loads of advance everywhere (see below). Bear in mind my SCR is 11.8 :1. A lower n/a SCR might tolerate a degree or so more @ WOT

This is the map that has been in the megasquirt since the first turbo engine. Its one I guessed at, and has been unchanged.
The timing has never been checked on a rolling road, it seems to work and there is no sign of detonation.

mmmm thats really interesting! cheers for that Eric, looking at your figures/points Id say hes set mine like yours as it turns out! :? will be interesting on the day then! Im just unsure of the dangers of timing it too high and what mishaps may happen on the road afterwards etc....... first time with all this timing lark, I just use to set the idle too 7 btc and be done with it lol.

thanks for the input guys Ill show this all to Adrian on the day see how he wants to play it :)

Mine is a bit on the conservative side, probably with a good rolling road session it could be improved. Also I always run on shell V-power.

Can't really comment on timing up a Turbo engine but with too much advance my Sport-ish engine will "hunt" on the over-run (or even on steady throttle) - it will make the car surge back and forth. Also, it'll come on strong low in the rev range, but will feel strangled at the top. More advance and it'll start pinking (which *is* the "worse" - keep pinking an you'll get holes in piston crowns etc).

Since pinking is hard to hear in an Imp or variant with the engine all the way back there, it might be worth making a "stethoscope". I seem to recall that someone flattened a bit of thin metal tube at one end, attached some washer tube to the other, and bolted the flat end to the cylinder head. Stick the end of the tube in your ear and you'll hear pinking clear as day, apparantly. Can't find the website though, and it wasn't on an Imp either - sorry.

All my n/a race engines run fine at around 36 degrees. 37 degrees with the Weber Alpha and I always use a max of 36 degrees with a distributer. I tend to use Tesco 99 these days although on the Continent it's possible to get upto 102 octane.

Hi LeC,
My map looks very similar to yours, but I've never really understood why we have so much advance on deceleration (ie high revs, low load/tps) ?

Hi Chris, if you have to hold it into gear then it probably isnt actually engaging fully. I doesn't exactly "pop out" of gear, it never quite gets there.... Before I adjusted mine it was crunching into second, once I set it up it became smooth :?

Wish I was able to get to the National, it's been over 20 years since I've been to one !
There's talk of having a 50th Imp get together over here in Oz next year (only a 5000km round trip for me... )

The high advance on the overrun is because the cylinders part fill with a weak mixture and you need more advance to burn a weak mixture to completion. I have run with less advance on the overrun and mine pops and bangs as the unburnt fuel catches fire in the exhaust primaries (primaries v hot due to exhaust wrap). No pops and bangs with the high advance on overrun.

The beauty of running logs on the road means you can safely fine tune away from the restricted artificial environment found under RR conditions.

It took me a while to spot areas for improvement and I still have more to do. And with on-going development like an air intake redesigns etc you need to re-tune the set-up and then retest. RR set-up is not the only way to get good results and is an expensive option if, like me, you often change things because part of the enjoyment of ownership is the R&D. :D

+1. I really like mild pops and bangs on the over-run. 8) Some cars and bikes take this a bit too far, though.

The car looks amazing and by the sound of it goes very well indeed, Chris. :D It's a credit to you! It'll be brilliant to see it at the national.
