DE 31.693 - a race car build - Looking for a 998

Post by Klaus »

Hi

I have for some time now enjoyed reading about your fun with the Imp. The best car forum I have ever been to. I also decided a while back to write a build thread of my race-imp project, never got to it, but have 10 minutes now, so lets get started.

I bought my first Imp in the summer of 2011 and loved it from the first drive. Had it for about a week and blew the head gasket :P, replaced the gasket and loved the little car even more. What an absolute joy to work on, so simple and well engineered.
In the winter i started the disassembly - (Okay how do i post a picture now)

Before - in the garage together with it's english pal , the more complicated type
Image

Can looks perfect - then you start dreaming "it's fantastic there is no rust" - then you wake up "there is allways rust"

Ahh forgot to write I'm on the look for a 998 engine - could be a race engine for rebuild or race engine parts (allrready got manifold and carbs)

My plan is to end up with a car eligible for historic racing, cage, discs, 998, webers, front rad, montes, spax etc - the works

Back to the build thread for some metal work

Looking good!
Glad to see one more skilled panel beater. I need every bit of tuition/instruction/information.
My garage is ready and almost usable now. Only the heating isn't quite adequate for -12º to -18ºC we have now.
Haven't yet decided which car to start with but both need some steel "renewed".

Crossbar? Belt and braces cage then :D I found that the backstays on SD cages went in ok but the rear hoop legs needed squeezing in - I used a rope and a bit of timber...just don't let go
Do you have details of the race series you're aiming for?

Neat strengthening plate welding, Klaus. :) I like that the floor plates are tied into the heater pipe boxes in the sills. I might emulate that when I restore my shell.

I'm not sure exactly what it's called, but think it's FIA Appendix K, homologation 5016 and as you maybe can see from my poor english language skills, I don't plan to do any racing in UK, so far only in DK.

There's nothing wrong with your English, Klaus. It's a great deal better than my Danish :D (An old friend of mine married a girl from Copenhagen, moved out there and vowed to learn 1000 words a month  ).
Having FIA papers should allow you to race anywhere in the world, including our HSCC and (I believe) Masters series.

Yes I'm I'm still on the look for a 998 engine - could be a race engine for rebuild or race engine parts (allrready got manifold and carbs)

Another update

To every restoration project there's some jobs you just need to get over and done - and then forget about them (otherwise you will never do a restoration again)

Off course it's the preparation prior to painting  I will not tire you with details about this - it might wake up some bad memories

Go on with the wirebrush

Very good Klaus, looks the business. Don`t want to pop your Imp bubble, but are you in good health after the Nitromors session, or can you hold your breath for very long periods? :P

Yep. Nitromors is nasty stuff alright. I stripped my entire Triumph Stag exterior with the stuff over 20 years ago. Outdoors. Interestingly, it didn't hurt my skin when it was just Nitromors. When is had some paint in it already, I believe the phrase was, "Ouch. That smarts."

Nice work, Klaus. 8) I note that your rear luggage compartment floor has no reinforcing ribs in it. Did you make this panel or have I missed something? I only ask because (1) this panel is structurally important and (2) the panel might 'drum' somewhat with a snorty Imp engine a few centimeters beneath it. Most likely, the car will be fine but I thought I'd ask.

This picture shows what I mean.

Exactly Chris - Welded a plate on - there was one originally, but very rusty from a leaking rea window

Okay - after so much preparation now it's finally time for some fun - in colours

About 700£ worth of paint :o I don't understand it, why is it so expensive :(
